Oh pls!!
There is a difference to paying hommage & plagarizing!! I'm sure every great composer from classical to film music composer have paid hommages. But there is a whole lot of difference when a person lifts others' work & this if they do repeatedly & calling it their own composition in the hope that nobody notices or better still nobody gives a hoot.
What & where i posted is relevant to those newsgroup and do see it as a positive criticism. Beyond that, it is the truth isn't it. Coz theres nothing at all to deny here.

Did you all see STAR WARS episode1? I think John Williams is already a fan of IR and is imitating IR!!!!! The end piece at the prologues where there is joy, unity and all is well that ends well scene, Williams attempts an very IR (or close to Indian movie style)instrumental bit. I have not seen this attempt by John Williams before!!! Check it out. The piece lasts about 2 minutes.
May the IsaiGnani live forever!

Aruvi,
Sorry about the late response. I feel that IR is not giving good stuff in tamil cos --you compare the songs of NMK and the songs form other languages i have told you before and see.
He has given such good variations in those.
hmmm....
BTW,have you visited my site lately?I have moved to a new one.

Guys,
Last Saturday night (Sunday early morning?) was a very memorable night for me, for two reasons. One, I was watching Sachin blasting the Kenyans like anything on the web (only:-(). Second, I selected a very small list of 80 songs(?) from Rex's site and kept hearing. I just went to a different world on a few songs. Some of them were ones which I had been paying less attention or new ones for me.
1) Kathum Kadal (Kattumarakkan). This song is really a great melody. I should say Mano has done a very good job in this one. Esp the humming after the end of second stanza is just too much. Great imagination by IR. (Hush hush, did SJ sodhappify a bit in that hum; hear closely).

2) Sollividu Velli Nilave (Amaidhippadai). Is this what they call Flute? It seemed to be a magic instrument. What a haunting flute piece?!!
http://members.tripod.com/ilayaraaja/apadai2.ram
3) En Gaanum (Eera Vizhik Kaaviyangal). Excellent guitar scores.
http://members.tripod.com/~ilayaraaja/evk2.ram
4) Mella Mella (Vaazhkai) I wonder why this song is only discussed very less. This has excellent violin piece.
http://members.tripod.com/~ilayaraaja/mella.ram
5) Idhu Oru Nilak Kaalam (Tic Tic Tic) This one is very different! Really really different one. Excellent composition. The flow which takes it to that 'Tha dhir dhinna' (what do u call this) and that 'Tha dhir dhinna' humming are wonderful. Brings in great feelings in you.

There are many more in this list. I just put the top 5 which enthralled me that night.

I forgot to thank first to IR having given such great numbers, second to Rex who has, has been, will be doing this great job of putting them with high quality on the web. Often I feel I should close down YASI for its bad quality. Rex, adhu eppadi dhaan panreenga. IR-oda serndhu edho koottu sadhi panni nammalayellam paithiyakkaran aakkarangappa :-( Just kidding.

I have a question regarding the song aruNa kiraNa dhIpam of guru (malayALam). the song seems to start off in the usual 4/4 beats but after that hE... shouting [:-)], it seems to change to 3+2+2 beats (classic thripuda thALam). i remember someone else writing that the song is in misra chApu (how was this arrived at?), but i think it's not any kind of chApu. can anyone pleae confirm/correct me?

Arularasan:
Chapa tala is an ancient tala system, with just two beats. We thus have Misra chapu, 3+4; Khanda Chapu, 2+3 (a.k.a. ara or half jhampa). Misra chapu and Thripuda thalam: same difference!
Hope that helps

Arularasan,
If you are interested in talas, check out IR's classical album. It has two compositions in very unusual beats: an abhogi varnam in khanda jathi tripuda talam (5+2+2) and a krithi in kalyani in tisra jathi dhruva talam (3+2+3+3). Terrific rhythms! (I had been intending to review this album for some time now...)

I couldn't believe my eyes when I bumped into LSubs at the airport. He was on his way to Bombay for a concert. I was
chatting with him for a while, and he mentioned about his forthcoming album called Global Fusion featuring his young
daughter Seeta Subramaniam and playback singer Kavita Krishnamurthy. He said he was going to give the first preview
of this album at the Shanmukhananda Hall, Bombay. My next obvious question was about Hey Ram. He was all praise
for the director and for his effort in bringing out the best from his team. He said (contrary to what I thought) that there
are slated to be a few songs in the film apart from some instrumental scores, a combo of Western and Indian classical
stuff (I guess for the BG). He said the highlight of the score is a duet by Kavita and Hariharan called 'Vaishnava Janato'.
By the looks of it, this score will be a great hit. Incidentally, his son plays a bit role in this film.
Looks like Kamal hasn't made a bad decision after all. (No doubt IR would have made a superior score as well... but
good to see some variety (and some quality too) returning to TFM. This is LSub;s first Tamil score (his other movie
scores include Salaam Bombay and Mississippi Masala, both by Mira Nair).

Neels, did you ask LSubs about IRs global prospects?
From: bb (@ inehou-pxy06.compaq.com) on: Thu Jun 3 11:25:52
among the brothers, they have done a few like Ezhaavadhu manidhan, the t.v serial pookkutty and so on.. lsubs'
knowledge of western classical is excellent, and his fusion works are also pretty good, apart from him being a violin
virtuoso.
From: bb (@ inehou-pxy06.compaq.com) on: Thu Jun 3 11:28:59
he has also experimented with jazz, checkout his album spanish wave..it is excellent.
From: bb (@ inehou-pxy06.compaq.com) on: Thu Jun 3 11:37:34
oh, forgot to mention, apart from salaam bombay and mississippi masala, he has also worked on bertolucci's little
buddha and mira nair's kamasutra..
From: Neels (@ 202.54.125.135) on: Fri Jun 4 03:27:52
BB,
In Little Budha and Kama Sutra, some of his compositions were used; he wasn't the main composer.

SitaRam,
No, I didn't discuss anything about IR's Global prospects. Most of the time, I was only listening to him (in awe!). I did
talk about the Forum though. ...and how we are rediscovering our music as well as its creators through the healthy
discussions and audio track exchanges here... I mentioned about the efforts by members to come up with an IR
compilation etc. Well, what I didn't do was to give him the address of this site!!!! He said he had great respect for IR.
and hey, he loves his background scores. He said he had also worked with ARR and that he's a gifted kid. He said he
wasn't much interested in composing for films much. He is more into World Music these days, promoting Indian music in
particular.

Neels,
In 1992 or'93, Pyramid released a CD of classical compositions by IR. (Appalling art work!) There are 5 songs in this album: an abhogi varnam in tamil plus four krithis, two in tamil and two in sanskrit. You have probably heard one of them: Shri Siva sudha... which was sung by P. Leela in Karpoora mullai. They are played by Mandolin Srinivas, accompanied by a horribly screechy violinist. I came upon this in New Jersey at a Tamil Assoc. programme where IR was given an honorary doctorate by some two-bit university. I bought this at a stall there and IR autographed it for me. Later on, I also managed to acquire handwritten (by Arunmozhi) notations for the songs. They are truly beautiful. AVM also released these songs (on a cassette format that has as a bonus some comments by Semmangudi). Every song either has a rare talam or ragam. Unfortunately, nobody has taken notice of these. This shows his amazing command over carnatic music. A pity that I see postings here that dismiss his knowledge of carnatic music when comaparing him with MSV. I would say not even G. Ramanathan comes anywhere close. (Of course, we all know IR's prowess in Folk and western music...)
Same difference, by the way, is an Americanism...
