HMV Saregama has released a compilation of Hariharans Latest in CDs and cassetes. This recording has the best of the lot sung by Hariharan. He proves himself in this recording. Thanks to the genius of AR Rahman who gave a life to this great artiste who would have been locked up in the Bombay hue otherwise.

at least one message FOR hariharan and not against him (heard so much about nasal voice and all those allegations against him in several other threads...)
hariharan is indeed a gifted musician. he has sung so many beautiful numbers (especially for ARR), starting with 'uyire' from 'bombay'
don't know why so many people don't like him....

Yes. But sometimes his arrogance shows in his songs. And he does not have much variance in his tone. His voice is much suited for HFM kind of music.

RAJESH:
**Yes. But sometimes his arrogance shows in his songs. **
Can u please elaborate??
**And he does not have much variance in his tone. **
I see - he can manage ghazals, pop, bhajans, semiclassical songs - songs in Tamil,Hindi and English with perfect diction - and u talk of lack of variance?????????????????
He has done ghazal albums with Zakir Hussain,Sultan Khan and Pakistani maestros like Mehndi Hassan and Rais Khan.
**His voice is much suited for HFM kind of music.**
What is HFM KIND OF music???

hariharan is a good singer like mannadey, mukesh, unnimenon, unnikrishnan, shankar mahadevan, srinivas etc. they are all belong to the same group. Though they sing well, it becomes monotanous after some time unlike tms and spb. There is no variation and voice modulation

Hariharan indeed has a pretty good 'gambeera' voice. no doubt...but i do agree with some of the posts here saying his voice becomes montanous. that is b'coz, many MDs don't give him challenging scores..all he sings are low pitched light melody duets, which tends to bore a listener in course of time. when you take SPB/TMS they were gifted with plenty of challenging songs, which made them great.

HARIHARAN IS BAD WHEN IT COMES TO SINGING LIVE. HE WAS EXPOSED IN HIS 1998 CONCERT IN SINGAPORE WHICH IS PROBABLY WHY HE NEVER CAME BACK HERE FOR ANOTHER SHOW. THE GUY MIMED FOR THE FIRST HALF OF THE CONCERT AND THE 2ND HALF HE SANG WAS BAAAD! MAYBE THAT'S WHY ARR HAD A TRACK PLAYING WHILE HARIHARAN SANG IN THE US CONCERT AND ALSO HAD CLINTION, DEVAN AND ARR TO BACK HIM UP.

Heaping insults on Hariharan's singing ability based on his songs in tamil is totally unacceptable. His ghazals and his rendition are impeccable, irreproducible and extremely melodious. He is one singer who cannot be imitated easily given the kalapana brighas he throws in theghazal songs. It is very difficult for a person to decode his swaras and re-sing.
I know I am praising him for non-tfm songs. But his voice is something extremely enchanting and enviable.

one thing...film music(esp tfm) needs not just sining in ghazal style, dhardh bhara song. agreed his voice is melodious in those type of songs. but, when comes to variety of singing i don't think he is so good as he is attributed to be. he even doesnt match the perfomance of Shankar mahadevan or srinivas in the variety type of songs. but just because that heaping insults are also unwarranted. as you claim he is damn good at ghazals. but still he is not a replacement of a TMS or SPB or KJY of high end or a Shankar Mahadevan or Srinivas or even a Malaysia Vasudevan of other end of Film songs singing. He is like our melody king PBS but when comes to the voice the PBS is ahead of HH. So, as the title claims could be HH is a PBS of this generation.

ARRFAN, u r right. Hariharan will always be remembered in Spore for the way he stuffed up during a concert.
For those who didn't hear the story, apparently, he dropped his mic. accidentally halfway through a song, but continued lip-synching to the horror of the audience. Poor guy. I couldn't help feeling sorry for him.

MS, I too agree with the aspect that he has defintely amazing voice (or as subbudu says 'thanga kambi' voice!)..but the discussion is all about his skills in singing for movies, where variety succeeds. Please don't name the comments as 'Insults' :-)

In my opinion, he is a good singer, with a very good training ( he worked under Jaidev who was in turn assistant MD to SD Burman). He is anological to Malaysia Vasudevan in his talent. that's all for him..

Hariharan is undoubtedly a good ghazal singer, buit somebody pls make him realise that ghazal singing and light music are two entirely different forms,
for heaven's sake let him stop thinking himself as a SPB.......ask him to sing rather than leaving eppam

Hariharan
Mumbai-born Hariharan is one of the pioneers of Indian fusion music. The son of Carnatic vocalists, Alamelu and the late H A S Mani, Hariharan’s musical talent was inherited. His first guru was his mother. He later developed a passion for ghazals and started training in Hindustani music from Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan.
In 1977, Hariharan won the all-India Sur Singaar competition and was signed on by the late music director Jaidev to sing for the Hindi film Gaman. His ghazal, Ajeeb saane he mujh par qarar, in that movie won him an Uttar Pradesh state award. In his early years, Hariharan sang for TV serials. He also released several successful ghazal albums, for which he penned the lyrics himself. One of them was Gulfam, which hit double platinum in sales and fetched him the Diva Award for Best Album of the Year in 1994.
Hariharan entered the Tamil filmdom in 1993 with the patriotic song Thamizha thamizha in Maniratnam’s Roja. He was adjudged Best Male Playback Singer in the Tamil Nadu State Government Film Awards for 1995 for his soulful rendition of Uyire uyire in the movie Bombay. Subsequently, Hariharan's voice has graced recent Tamil films.
The year 1996, when he released the fusion album Colonial Cousins with Bombay-based composer/singer Leslie Lewis, was a career milestone. This was the first Indian act to be featured on MTV Unplugged. It won a string of awards, including the MTV Indian Viewers' Choice award. The songs in this album bring out Hariharan’s versatility and ease in handling Carnatic music as well as ghazals.
Despite being an admirer of Kishore Kumar, Mohd Rafi and S P Balasubramaniam, Hariharan has developed a distinctive style of his own.

He’s probably the only Indian singer to have made a name for himself in every genre of popular Indian music. However it is significant to note that Hariharan’s entry into the entertainment world as a vocalist came about because of his passion for the ghazal.
Born on April 3rd, 1955, Hariharan grew up in Bombay and has a Bachelors degree in science and law. The son of renowned Carnatic vocalists, Shrimati Alamelu and the late H A S Mani, Hariharan naturally inherited his parents' musical talents. He initially trained under his mother acquiring a very basic knowledge of Carnatic music. However his parents bore a very open mind toward music and the young Hariharan drifted toward learning Hindustani Sangeet as well.
Very obviously influenced by the ghazals of Mehdi Hassan and Jagjit Singh, he started his training in ghazal singing from Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan. It meant putting in as many as nine hours of practice daily as well as taking formal lessons in spoken Urdu to perfect his command over the medium of poetry. The effort paid off and today his impeccable Urdu diction results in his shows being huge successes in places like Lucknow - the heartland of Urdu poetry. For a singer with South Indian origins this truly is a commendable effort. Hariharan's affinity for ghazals lies in the fact that ghazals offer, in his words, "immense scope for innovation".
It was in 1977 that he bagged the top prize in the All-India Sur Singaar competition and was promptly signed on by the late music director Jaidev to sing for the Hindi film ‘Gaman’. His ghazal ‘Ajeeb saane he mujh par qarar’ in that movie became such a hit that it won Hariharan an Uttar Pradesh state award, after which his career as a vocalist spiraled upward.
In his early years Hariharan did the concert circuit and also rendered playback for several television productions. It was around such time that he also cut several successful ghazal albums for which he composed music as well. One of his earliest ghazal albums was ‘Abshaar-e-Ghazal’ with Asha Bhosle, which scored a Gold in sales. Another outstanding ghazal album was ‘Gulfam’, which not only hit a double platinum in sales but also fetched Hariharan the Diva Award for the Best Album of the Year in 1994. Meanwhile, Hariharan sang in a number of Hindi movies such as ‘Sahibaan’, Lamhe, ‘Raam Nagari’, ‘Dard Ke Rishte’, ‘Zamana’ and ‘Sindoor’. One also cannot forget mentioning his entry into the Indi pop world after pairing up with music composer Leslie Lewis to form the Indo - English group ‘Colonial Cousins.’ The duo has worked together to produce very successful albums like ‘Sa Ni Dha Pa’ whose success made them the only Indians to be featured ‘Unplugged on MTV’.
Hariharan rather undoubtedly is a very talented artist. But what is even more noteworthy is the fact that his repertoire as a singer expanses almost all categories of popular music, with a significant achievement in each, from ghazals to film to Indi pop.
