Naaz's thread on 'what role listeners can play in establishing quality in TFM' set me thinking. The desperate (ok maybe I am being hyper) but the need of the hour is a TV channel that shadows the popularity of over-commercial and vulgar MTV India and Channel V yet it cool and hep in the right way to attract youngsters ! Ok here we go :
THE BRIEF :
-Come up with good Brand names that you think will be suitable for such a channel
- Names and ideas for programmes that can be featured in such a channel
- Ideas on how to market such a channel among our youth and general populace
TARGET AUDIENCE
- Indian Music lovers of all ages
I wanted to put down a full-scale marketing brief here....but time doesn't permit...so let's at least brainstorm.....as someone has said "If you can think of it or dream it, you can achieve it !
So people, start shooting your ideas here !!

For starters, how about a name like :
GraviTV or GTV ! The tagline can be "Music that holds you spellbound !
Programs can be :
1) Folk Time - Folk artistes from various parts of India with proper and detailed explanations
2) Upcoming MDs - Can be an Interview with a new MD in whichever regional language...can include cross-examination if some of their compositions are found to be lifted.

WhyNot, Magix
How about some ideas of some programs that you would like to see...and what kind of wacky promos that you would devise to lure away MTV gawkers to our channel ? Should make pure MTV viewers feel like morons.

Channel Name -Ganga -Symbolising the Indian values
Old Tamil Songs - Ponni /Aruvi
Old Hindi Songs - Yamuna
New MD / Lyricist - Sunai - Ootru
Intro to other music forms like WCM,Jazz-Sangamam
Folk - Oodai
Indian Clssical -Vergal !Vizhuthugal!
Puthu padalgal - Kaataru / Kurumazhai /Poombunal
Marketing the tamil names should pose intital problems.but in the long run it can be managed.I understood Chitrhaar,Darpan,Rangoli etc.. after initial confusion.
Tagline - Music -the SOUL WAY!

wait a minute...is this gonna be a Tamil only channel or meant for others eg. southerners, all Indians as well?
Talk about tapping MTV viewership gave me the impression it was for a more general audience.

How about a music show titled: Tamizhukku Amudhendru Paer - a programme of Mellisai presented by artistes new and established - from within TN? (an indirect and interesting way to counter all the "nuninaaku" tamizh and "araikurai" tamizh that has pollinated the general tamizh music scene?

a tv channel? how about a radio channel for starters. I don't think FM is big in India. if it will be, this sounds like a good idea to tap a market niche.

oisg, great names and programmes.
how about Katcheri Neram - for classical concerts? it can cover the december music season and thyagarajar aaraadhanai too.
Nizhalgal - for concerts by music bands specialising in reproducing tamil songs on stage/remix artists
Nijangal - concerts by Gangai Amaran/SPB/ARR concerts etc..

Unfortunately carnatic music has been associated with a certain community in TN.So a katcheri neram covering Thiruvayaru may not be received well intially. The Carnatic music in TN should first strive to get a cosmopolitan ..not the right word..inam kadantha image.Men like Siva Chidambaram should be used to bring in the balance.IR would have been the natural choice but for his unpredictable and reclusive nature.A repeat of Urugai..appalam statment will spell diaster to the whole concept of reaching the masses and broaden the spectrum. The dire need of the hour is an ICON for this particular transformation.I think AsiaNet has attemted this but they too lack an ICON.So till today the program remains "one for the connoisseur".
(I hope HCIRF understand my honest intentions)
A Big NO for ragas in Cine songs!(Honestly it is one of my big interests!but looking at the larger picture i say this). This efforts on this concept has deepened the divide.
Lets train the audience to accept the diversity and understand the uniqueness of each music.Looking for simmendramandhyamam in Gypsy music,Hemavathi, dharmavathi in Arab music and will not bring in the desired result of improving the audience taste.
Lets keep away from Fusion.Sujatha(Rengarajan) solvathu pol VEllakarikku pinni mallipoo vechamathiri than irukku.Bach um BEhagum,Wagner m Vachaspathiyum pondra item kalai arave thavirkavendum.
The folk music is a big black hole.Ila Arun claims,Kuppuswamy claims,Hans Raj Hans claims..So men like Bhupen Hazarika should be used to develop the standards.Without a clear yardstick you will find the whole canada-born Mundya at the studio gates with albums ( i should say alpams!)

After a while it kills your open-minded approach to film songs. You start dissecting the songs based on established theories of music.Personally it has made me less receptive.

newtfmpage.com itself has a lot of content that we can convert into chat shows and other programs..for starters yes...it could be a kind of Internet radio station...but don't these already exist ?

an internet radio station is a great idea. what are the logistics? it has to be a pay site otherwise the economics will work out considering the ad revenue these days. it shouldn't end up as swaramlika.com.
reg. carnatic music: it depends on the way it is packaged. Mohan vaidya's programme was hugely popular (atleast among the carnatic-savvy and brahmin crowd). somewhere along the line we need to give exposure to some sort of formal musical education so that the overall musical appreciation is bettered. kids/youth need to have some training to choose quality music over the mass-produced glitzy stuff. hence, packaging it with stars is important. marundhu kasakku, adhanaala then kalandhu kudikkanum. that's where the icon comes in. IR may not be a good choice because of his age. unfortunately, we need someone young to sell music. like anuradha sriram, shankar mahadevan..

Yeah, you are right about the resources available in newtfmpage.com . Though I am unaware of any kind of dedicated internet radio of the kind that we are talking about here ,I wud be happy to know more about them , if they do exist .
I suggested the web because, FM may not reach many ppl. Moreover the web channel will be useful for the NRIs . To start with , how about buying time in already popular FM station(s) in India to create some kind of awareness about the need for an exclusive channel with meaningful objectives.
all imho..
