Dear Friends,
I really couldn't resist starting this thread and I hope the contribution from all of you to this thread would be a great way to know/share more about Maestro IR, since the heading about this thread is IR and HIS....., a small snippet about IR which I read several years ago in one of our Tamil magazine and how this used to make me think so funny about our life.
Did you guys know that IR is the 24 th son of his father born to his third wife, guys just imagine what if IR's father had decided to stop having his offsprings after say 10 or 12, or what if IR's father was married only once?, I could not even imagine myself growing amidst the non IR music during my school/college days , Thanks to All Mighty and thanks to Ir's parents.
Sorry for the long digression, let me start with the Kannada movies and IR: first movie "Maathu tappada Maga" (Vaartai tavarada Pillai(Magan)" I do not remember all the songs in this movie , but 2 songs were very good, one of the songs quite regularly played on Nov.1 of every year ,because of the song describing about Karnataka .
Ir's first noticeble songs came from Shankar nag's "Janma Janmada anubhandha" all 4 songs are just fantastic., one of them "Aakasdinda jaari....." was made in one of the tamil movies sung by Arun Mozhi, the best one is " Yaava shilpi kanda kanasu neeenu" one of the all time best's, Bangalore Vividhabharathi plays this song in most of the " Neyar Viruppam".
Shankar nag's subsequent movies (Produced by his home production)Geetha had allare far out songs , the no. one is " Jotheyali jothe jothe yali" ( In tamil Nooravadu naazh)even after 12 or 13 years this song was one among the top tens of one of
the sponsored programs. more to follow

Ilaiyaraja and Shankar Nag had a fruitful partnership spanning over several movies. I remember watching one such film titled "Accident" on DD several years ago. (I'd made it a point to watch it b'cos I'd heard that IR was the MD for it :)) This movie had no songs in it, but again the maestro was conspicuous by the BGM. The BGM was very subtle in the entire movie, but the stamp was there alright !
IR's contributions in Kannada also came to the fore with Mani Ratnam's "Pallavi Anupallavi". But I felt he did not work much here after that, except for some odd film here and there.
More recently, he has hit big time with the mega hit of last year "Nammoora Mandara Hoove". The cassettes of the film topped the charts last year. He has also worked on an off-beat movie titled "Bhoomi Geethe" in which his BGM got rave reviews. His forthcoming movie in Kannada is "Hoo Male" (*ing Ramesh Arvind), made by N. Chandrashekhar (of "America America" fame).

One of IR's songs in Balu Mahendra's yAthrA (malayalam) is an exact copy of Rodgers and Hammerstein's 'My favourite things' (The Sound of Music). The song is the first song in the movie (on the bus sung by kids when Mammooty is returning home from prison).
You too rAjA ? :-(

IR's forays into Telugu films is more impressive.
I happened to watch a quite a few Telugu films during my year-long stay at Vizag about 12 years ago. Everyone knows about how successful was the IR-K Vishwanath combination. Besides that another director who benefitted from IR's association is Vamsi. Sitara (Banupriya's first telugu movie),Preminchi pelladu (5 excellent songs), Alaapana (dubbed in Tamil as 'Salangayil ore sangeetham) and Anweshna (dubbed as Paadum Paravaigal). Some of the songs in these movies were IR's earlier Tamil tunes (SJ's thooraththil naan kanda un mugam was used in Sitara, Oh Vennilavae from Anandhakummi was used in Preminchi pelladu). But these exceptions aside, the other tunes are excellent ones making one wonder how come IR didn't use them in Tamil (except the dubbed versions).

Have you heard of Nanu Nanna Gellalare? It has a fantastic duet by Dr. Rajkumar and S Janaki. It is a famous song of IR in Kannada.
I have heard of a very melodius song sung by PSusheel in Kannada and music by IR. Does anyone know of that?
In telugu, Anvesham is truly superb. Once I remember watching the national film song program called Chitramala. I always eagerly awaited that program. One of the finest Chitramala's had two of my similar situational songs occurring one after the other, by my two all-time great composers. The first is a SJanaki solo (koo, Koo, from Anvesham) the second was (Keeloo, Keeloo) from Swapnam (SJanaki) by Salil Chowdhury. I had always thought that these two songs were like soul mates and here they were appearing together on national DD!

Raja's music for Geethanjali was perhaps one of the most popular those days. The sheer consistency
of Raja was evident in each song - each a gem. Who can forget Om Namaha or Aamani Padave. Similarly he has shown his remarkable capabilities in Swathimuthyam and Sagara Sangamam. Since all three films were later dubbed in Tamizh, perhaps TFM aficionados prefer to remember them all as IRs contribution to TFM rather than non-TFM.

Diwakr: As is being discussed elsewhere, these dubbed movies do not hae the same quality in Tamil as they did in their original language. :-(.

Dear Nithin,
The Rajkumar's movie by IR was "Nee Nanna Gellalaare" Manjula starring with him.Surprisingly none of the IR"s kannada movies were hits at Box office including "Pallavi Anu Pallavi" which ran for just 13 weeks (Not 100 days) so people used to talk a lot about Ir's bad luck when even Dr. Raj's movie flopped, who fardly gave any flops in the last 15 years.Accident was the only movie which ran for more than 100 days, till "NMH" broke that record however all the songs from his kannada movies are still some of the greatest songs given by IR. Kannada audience are very weird some times they recognised IR's versatality very early but yet only Shankar Nag was the only one who utilised IR very well,Shankar nag's other movies with IR are"Bharjari Bete" nice songs , one of them dubbed in "Anda Oru Nimisham " later. Ir sang a song for the first time in kannada in this movie, which goes like "Tindadude rendu kiliye" of Aananda Kummi. "Nyaya Geddithu" had some great songs, Ir snag again with SJ in a funny duet, (Which used to sound like Udit Narayan's tamil ucharippu, yet funny) and a non Shankar nag movie "Naagara Bayalu" 4 songs, one of them had a starting music just similar to "Manasu Kalike" of Swathi Muthyam.
Ofcourse, some of the movies came as dubbed versions in Tamil also, like "priya", "Ajeya" (A murali starrer, don't remember the tamil name), One more Kamal Starrer directed by Srtidhar which never got released except for the songs "Hunnime Surya".
Ir's come back was with"Shiva Sainya" a movie by an upcoming sucessful director, Shiva Mani starring Rajkumar's son Shivraj Kumar, 3 songs were good. One of the duets of IR with Chitra was a run away hit. More about Vamshi Telugu films later,

One particular Kannada song comes to my mind.It starts with something like "Anuraagaa Enaaythu ..".It is a melancholy sung by Rajkumar(and chorus).Raja's interludes are so fantastic in this song that they bring you to that mood immediately.
It was vintage Raja at hsi best.Any comments ??...
