Several wonderful songs in the TFM are based on rural folk songs, that are sung in the villages for different occasions. One example that immediately comes to my mind is "Ayiram thAmarai mottukkaLE" from AlaigaL Oyvadhillai.
Why don't we take a look at these nAttupura pAdalgaL that have enriched TFM ?

The tune for the song Ayiram thamarai Mottukkale" itself is based on a song that Ilayaraja's mother used to sing at temple festivals in Pannaipuram. That original song goes like this:
"Aanai varatha Paarungadi
Athu Saainji Varatha Paarungadi"

Didn't the movie "Karayellam Shenbagappoo" have Manorama singing many folk songs or maybe she didn't sing it but recited it. I remember the movie was based on a Sujatha serial from Aanantha Vikatan about a guy going to the rural areas in search of folk songs. Can someone shed light on this?

Hi Udahya,
KS was indeed a Sujatha serial which had appeared in Vikatan. This is some sort of thriller. Pratap Pothen comes to the village looking for Nattupura Pattu. In this I heard "Paadariyen Padippariyen". Similary there are also some funny "Oppari" songs in this. Mediocre movie but some genuine "Nattupua Paadalgal".

Thanks Suresh. So was this "Paadariyen Padippariyen" that Vairamuthu later took to new heights in "Sindhu Bhairavi"? Also, I vaguely remember the lullaby "Kannana Poomaganae Kannurangu Sooriyanae" that Vairamuthu wrote for "Thanneer Thanneer", wasn't that also a Nattupaadal?

Uhaya,
Yes. It was the same one on which VM built his song. I dont know the other song from "Thanneer Thanneer"

"Paadariyen paadippariyen" (first two lines) was used by IR way back in "Pudhiya Vaarpugal". I think Bharathiraja (not quite sure) sings it.

Most of you have mentioned the tunes and songs as a whole, but also there are quite a lot of fantastic nattuppura padal as interludes.
Pachcharisi mavidichi, (prelude to Madurai MK vasam)
Ae.... Maanthoppil Mazhaiyadikka
(and the callresponse Thandana Thanda, Thaana Thanda interludes in Pillai Nila Irandum vellai Nila - from
Neengal Kettavai)
The horrifying Udukkai pattu from Uchchi Vahundeduththu
Kattoru Pora vazhi Odungada Kalaigala...
Interlude that comes in Unakkenaththane
Innaerama
Kalaiyana Paththuputta Jallikkattu Kalaiyellam
(Murattu Kalai - Poduvaga en manasu)
are my favorites.
Of course, Mudhal Mariyadhai had
the famous - Aeradha malai mela...
The following also sound like Nattu pattus because of the unusual structure:
Thali onnu venuminnu thannikkulla- Sippikkul
Muththu.
Coming back to tunes, I heard that Manguyile
Poonguyile is a nattu song that begins 'Aerumayilaeri varum'
or 'Vaezhamuga samiyadhu' or...
;)
Anybody knows about this song?

This has been a lot of good info, guys (in fact, almost everything was new to me). Thanks.
Now, considering the fact that TFM has, for long, been influenced by these nAttupura pAdalgaL , I get the feeling that there ought to be a lot more instances, for instance, movies like ThaNNeer thaNNeer, oru indhiya kanavu, nAttupura pAttu, pudhu pudhu rAgangaL (which had some songs by Dr. Vijayalakshmi Navaneethakrishnan) had a lot of rural nAttupura falvour in their themes. Any idea about their sources, anyone ?
Secondly, when was it that nAttupura pAdal were used in films for the first time ? (Manisekaran, can you help me on this ?!)

RJAY: "Maanguyilae Poonguyilae" has the same meter as
"yaerumayil yaeri viLaiyaadu mugam ondru
EEsarudan gnana mozhi paesum mugam ondru"
-ILaiyaraja said this in one of the interviews.
The meter suits "Rathiriyil poothirukkum thaamarai thaan peNNO" too.

There's a lovely folk song interlude for `Anandham anandham nee thandhadhu' in Poottadha Poottukkal:
`Eh thavamAa thavmirundhu, thanga mahan onnappeththEn...
arasamaram suthi vandhu, arasAla onnappeththEn...
paththiyamA nAnirundhu, pArALa onnappeththEn...
Alana paingiLiye...kaN vaLarAi...kaN vaLarAi....'
This will be followed by a rich piano composition...
