Off late, K S Chitra has become one of my hot favourites amongst female singers. Her voice has a unique and rich timbre which I really enjoy. lets take this opportunity to discuss songs by her in Tamil and various other languages - Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu. Her songs sung under the tutelage of Ilayaraja, AR Rehman, Ravindran et al are really excellent, moreover she has a delightful classical touch as is seen in her rendition of "alaipayuthe" and the Sindhubhairavi songs. She has done a great deal of Hindu and Christian devotional albums in Southern languages...lets discuss those. My favourite Chitra song so far remains "gopika vasantham" and her duet with SPB in the Telugu
movie Swathikiranam. What a voice and that sharpness!
So please, lets discuss her songs!! :-)
(If this topic has been discussed in full detail - similar to the Vani Jairam thread - please post a link to it). Otherwise lets make this an encyclopedia of KSC songs.

A few other worthy mentions, although I am a little lazy to post the links now :-)
1. Shivamallipoove (composed by IR) from Friends - a pop number set in Shanmughapriya sung stylishly by Chitra. Incidentally this song came out in the late 90s when IR was supposedly devoid of all creativity and had been cremated here in DF :-)
2. Ponveyilil - Perhaps MS had already mentioned this song but nevertheless worthy of a second mention.. another great number in the late 90s, a soft lilting duet by Chitra and KJY composed by IR, from Yaathramozhi
3. Azhaga Kallazhaga - Unfortunately the Chitra version seems diffcult to get.. a very good number composed by Deva from Kallazhagar, with an impressive start. The brisque pace in the charnams and the scale at times reminds you of "manjolai kilithano".
4. Yenge enadhu kavithai - not a great personal favourite but nevertheless worthy of mention..composed by ARR
5. Malare pesu Mounamozhi(from geethanjali?) - Chitra in her nascent voice along with IR in this delightful composition

Wow! Great post!
If u want to listen to Chitra under KVM, there are 2 songs I know in the Telugu movie Swathikiranam. One is duet with SPB - "pranati pranati pranati". Nice song! Other is a duet with Vani - "shruti neevu gati neevu bharati".

Ramki:
If you are around, plesae give us a list of some rare goldies of Chitra and let this thread more info.
Do people know kannada songs of Chitra ? Would like to know the good numbers which she has sung. I have heard 'Piya basanthi re' (hindi) by chitra from a private album by some Maestro of Hindustani music. A complete review about the rest of the songs in that album will me much appreciated. I will try to come up with more unheard mallu melodies if possible. I am not feling guilty any more :-)

MS,
Chitra released two albums in Hindi AFAIK. One was "piya basanthi re" with Ustaad Sultaan Khaan. But it is more or less a pop album. The other one is "Sunset Point" with Gulzar, Bhupinder being a co-singer. I have heard only its title song "kachhe rang utar jaane do". Nothing much to speak about really, but she has done her job fairly well. There is one more pop album by her coming up for SONY. www.chitra.com may have more details.
http://Musicindiaonline.com has Kannada duets of Chitra.
BTW...has she been trained in Hindustani music too? Has she performed full-scale Carnatic concerts (like KJY has)?

wow. good to see this thread really active.
my favourites:
1. my favourite of Amala's songs sung by KSC: Ninnukori varnam. Vaa Vaa Anbe Anbe is the other good KSC/KJY duet in the film.
2. Aalappol from Ejamaan always appears first in my playlist alphabetically. so I end up listening to it most of the time. can't get tired of it.
3. Siththagathi Pookkaley from Rajakumaran, another of the poppish IR numbers in early 90's.
4. All KSC songs in Siraichalai. I've already mentioned this. doesn't hurt to mention it again.
5. Chinnakuyil Paadum Paattu Ketkudha - the song that got her the title Chinnakuyil Chithra, I believe.
6. Yedhedo Ennam Valarthen - Punnagai Mannan. the last song in my playlist!
7. Deiveega Malarallava - I think this is a duet with VJ. great classical song.

MS: Alongwith "Aakaasham maeghaalu" that you mentioned, I would like to add another good melody of KSC under IR "Navodayam naadam" from Kokila. It is a haunting melody in my opinion and chithra has done full justice to the mood of this song (inspirational in nature).
Regarding KSC singing for KVM in telugu: I think she essentially replaced PS (KVM's favorite) and SJ. Apart from the two songs from swathikiranam that AVR mentioned, there is another duet with VJ in that same movie - "Jaaligaa jaabilamma" - excellent melody and lyrics. Must for all KSC and VJ fans. Other good songs under KVM are in the movies Janaki Ramudu, Alludugaru etc.
Question: In malayalam, has anyone heard the song "Yamunaa..nadhi ozhugum suprabhaatham" from Devadaasi, composed by Sharath? It is such a complex song with all kinds of roller-coaster rides making it challenging for the singer. And, of course, KSC won the challenge effortlessly. This MD, sharath, seems to always make very complex tunes. Other songs in Devadaasi also have a lot of twists (in terms of melody) in them.

In June 2001, Chitra had performed along with SPB and KJY at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Their concert was a phenomenon, as per press reports. Any idea which songs she performed there?

AVR, thanks for the links. reading the interviews, we can clearly see that she is one of the most humble persons in the field in spite of her heady achievements. She shows great respect for her seniors (Dasettan, Balusir, Janakiamma, Ashaji). She is a good friend of Kavitha and Sadhana Sargam and she likes Harini.
I went to the ARR concert in New York 2 years back. Chithra sang just one song - Rang De from Thakshak. Asha B is the original singer. It was rather insulting asking such a senior singer to sing just one song, that too not hers. But, she took it in her stride and sang it (with her Mallu-accented Hindi:-).

I had the exact same impression (as you did) of chithra once I finished reading both the articles. She is such a down-to-earth person that my admiration for her has increased even more. May she give us many more melodies in the future.

Her personality is sweeter than her voice. thx for the links to interviews. No wonder music directors and fans treat her with utmost respect.

To add to the charming Amala-KSC combination i am reminded instantly of the beautiful "Kannukkul Nooru nilava idhu oru kanavaa ..." from Vedham puthithu . While on Vedham Puthithu , i have a question - I remember reading somewhere that Devendran was known as Hamsalekha previously ? Is this true ?
