There is not afilm today withimpressive RR and the concept of theme music which was very popular during late seventies and through eighties,is only being misinterpreted. The feel required for an effective scene can be brought in only by RR and not by dialogues.Anybody who wishes to communicate with statistics in this regard, pls welcome.

i feel that RR was being overused earlier, and now doesn't play that important a role. i guess people are also tired of the BGM being very repetitive (same shenai for sOgam, same sitar for happiness). also, innovativeness in RR is scarecely noticed thesedays, so the incentives to do it might not be there. ARR has taken this to the extreme by not doing RR thesedays.
about the concept of theme music, i feel that ARR is doing a great job. but i get irritated when i see a song being churned out throughout the movie in its all permutations and combinations (especially SAR!).

Not just in the BGM, this SAR guy fills the tune of one song as interlude of some two, three songs in the same movie! Really boring!

Dear Subasri
Rerecording aside, what happened to the india direct site of yours. Lot of us where regulars there i am sure. But now it seems to have sailed into space and lost any activity. Can you reactivate it preferably with more film news and info's than songs. Cause we get the songs we want very easily on the net u see.

DEAR FRIENDS, ACTIVITIES HAVE STARTED FULL FLEDGED ON INDIA DIRECT AND HOPE TO BE IN FULL FORM VERY SOON. JUST THAT I AM TOO HELD UP WITH MY OFFICIAL SCHEDULES, I AM NOT ABLE TO BE REGULAR ABOUT IT.
COMING TO SPEAK ABOUT RR, REHMAN'S THEME MUSIC IS AGAIN LIKE A SONG OR A BGM OF ANY SONG FROM THE FILM. IT NEVER USED TO BE THAT WAY DURING ILAYARAJA'S REGIME.THERE IS NOTHING AGAINST REHMAN'S TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE,BUT MUSICALLY,TODAY,NO RERECORDING CREATES AN IMPACT AND I HAVE PERSONALLY ENCOUNTERED A LOT OF PEOPLE WITH THE SAME OPINION.

MR.Vijay, I am definitely the same subhasree of India direct and I have corrected my format of typing.I am ardent fan of Ilayaraja and I am just trying to interact with people who belong to the same fan club.Just in case you want to reconfirm that I am the same one from India direct, you may send a mail to that site and i will definitely ask the coordinator to post a response.

OK, if u are the real 'subhashree' Pl. excuse me for being a little curious;)) I was windering how in the world u would be having time for all this net chatting amidst your busy schedule.
If u want to discuss about IR's works this is the best place on the net. U can go to the archives section in this site and revisit some of the interesting topics that have been discussed here in the past. Iam a 2-year veteran here and still enjoying my time here.
also, get to listen to some wonderful rare songs
of IR at Rex's and Suresh's site. The links are given in the 'Rare songs if Ilayaraja ' thread.
By the way, your site seems to be slow in updating top 10 and ungal virupam. Is Mr. Suresh Chakravarthy busy doing other things?

dear friends,
Because I am the same Subhasree of India direct, nobody has really taken up my subject of rerecording for discussion. Also, I have received a few mails atshinus@email.com requesting confirmation(rather cross checking). If you want to know how I find time to surf, I do it very late in the night or very early in the morning. I might not be very regular, due to my schedules, but i shall definitely keep in touch, whatsoever.Coming back to RR, it was just worrying me that in today's tfm, only songs meant music.i dont think that is a healthy status because there are so many lovely feelings which would be felt in its natural flavour only through rr.Movies like alaigal oyvathillai, kadalora kavithaigal, idhayathai thirudathe are examples where audience used to clap for re recording bits.Needless to say about musical tributes like kaadhal oviyam, salangai oli and sindhu bairavi.Does anybody have the hope that the golden era asfar as this aspect is concerned, will return to tfm?

I'm not sure ST, with IR enjoying the `close-to-evening' of his career! Thus the `Thenee' which used to collect the nectar from flowers and present natural, refreshing honey is taking it light! Why, even ARR prefers to be focusing on HFM most of the time and TFM is devoid of the sugar factory as well. In TN there is no honey, no sugar! I'm sorry, it's difficult to locate even `iluppaippoo'... people seem to be enjoying `uppuma-made-out-of-old-odli' stuff of the `pseudo-thenees' all the time! (even MFM looks better nowadays)

Well, in my opinion, it seems to be the general trend for producers and MDs to concentrate in SELLING thier music and so the film songs esp. take the cake. BGM's are now good only with directors who emphasise on this. Very few do this because more people are interested in selling cassettes and CDs than making a movie to the hearts content. One thing that could make BGM's better would probably be to sell BGM's to the market too. This is IMHO. Reg the hope part of it we can always hope for the best, but given the commercial circumstances I stil feel that the producers, Directors get only what they want and if they are not much ineterested in the BGM part then how can we expect good BGM's. Manirathnam, KB, Rajiv menon, kadir etc are the few ppl who think BGm's play a part in thier movie.

Subhashree,
Why dont you ask about this to ARR and post the interview in Indiadirect???May be it would add some life to KPTO.

I think, a good BGM score is a music which suits the scene so perfectly. So that I should get unnoticed.
Some of excellent BGMs got unnoticed due to its excellence itself. (Eg. BGM in climax of Kadhalukku mariyathai).
I feel, once a good BGM is noticed, it loses its charm.

Good RR or BGM from ARR would be asking too mcuh from that poor guy. If he takes a month or two for one movie songs, how many more months would he take to compose a good BGM. Only and Only Ilayaraja can give the best BGM with quality and that too in few hours of effort.
Recently I watched "Anantha Poongaatru" and Deva stole the "Ithayathai Thirudaathe" humming and reused it. (I wonder whether he has the capability to produce anything on his own) What a shame!!!

ST,
I dont think the 'golden era' that u are talking about would ever return. Eden, though IR might not be composing melodious songs like he did until a few years back, his RR skills are still intact as witnesses in devathai,KM,Housefull, Kaadhal kavithai etc. He is the only MD who spends more tme on RR especially for a 'good' film.
ST,these days the director/producer is rarely concerned even with the music in films leave alone the RR. This is evident from the fact that deva is composing music for most films right now which is definitely a shame and reflects the deteriorating standards of the TFM audience's taste. Paatukke inga mathipillathapothu Re-Recording pathi yaaru kavalai padap poranga?
If u ever arrange for an interview with Deva in the future naakka pidungikaramaathiri naalu kelvi kelunga, please. If u want I can mail u a list of songs that he copied. His BGM is noise and u end up with headaches after sitting thru some of his films. ARR's songs themselves don't have that much of an emotional impact, so expecting great RR from him for emotional scenes is a little bit too much. I dont know much about the RR of newcomers like Bharadwaj. as of now the future looks bleak as far as RR is concerned, but who knows?...

1. there is little innovativeness in RR. even MDs like IR resort to standard concepts to suit the situations.
2. typecast of instruments/tunes for certain situations is highly prevalent. there is no impetus/necessity to be different. that's why RR is stale nowadays.
3. IR and others brought out this concept of having tunes of songs (with different instruments, may be at a different pace) for BGM. this definitely has brought down the quality of the BGM.
4. a good movie doesn't need a BGM.eg - several english movies.
5. the theme of RR is not added to the music album. hence, it is not a marketable commodity.

bb: I don't agree with point 4 of yours.
BGM certainly enhances the impact of a movie by a non-trivial amount however good the movie is by itself.
And also, good BGM can certainly help sell a sub-standard movie (eg. several love stories).
Anyway, this is a subjective view.
About 2: I think the situations in TF are so typecast that they deserve typecast music !!
