I listened to VandeMatharam in which ARR recycled his own tunes from Kizhakku Ceemayile and a touch of a song from Indira.
Also ARR's recent movies for big time producers like Ratchagan and Iruvar (except one song) and Dhoud in Hindi did not have any notable music. Remember ARRs last hit Minsarak Kanavu music was done long time ago.
If for a major album for Sony released on 50th year of Indian Independence, ARR cannot produce original music, then I have to come to the conclusion that he is running out of stuff. I heard that ARR is planning to cut down on movies and concentrate more on albums. Thus he will have to produce less and earn more.
Right now I do not see any difference in the quality of music produced by ARR and Karthik Raja. In fact I think Deva is doing a better job of providing consistant good quality music.

VandeMatharam was released world wide. This audience are not familier with TFM, I wouldn't call this coping but - REUSING!, there is nothing wrong with that as long as the audience are different! in fact Ali Khan's song was directly reused from poralea ponnu thayae of "Karuthamma"
And VandeMatharam is successful in the World market!, the reason SONY is negotiaging another contract with ARR. ARR always wanted to have his music exposed to a grater audience
This is the anwer ARR gave when a similar question was asked:
Q. Are you being repetitive in your
musical style?
A. In recent times I've done films
with a similar outlook. These films
are aimed at the young generation and
therefore have to be beat oriented.
Yet I've tried for a distinct sound
every time. After Bombay I haven't
got stuck in the hip-hop groove. What
I did for Rangeela and Indian were
zestful and fast paced but quite unlike
Bombay. As for the gentler paced
songs of 'Kadhal Desam' if you care
to notice they are rooted in melody.

"Whether ARR is running out of stuff " - this question is itself misleading. He is one talented youngster ( whiz kid - to many!) and has a lot of years ahead of him. TFMers are raving about his jeans in another thread. What he does - being selective in his choice of movies, will be good for him. He is talented, young and has innovated a lot. He also has a good grounding in classical music ( western and indian ). Imo, he has just started. Let's hope he continues to churn out goodies out of his kitchen!

AR.Rehman is basically copying western music and doctering the music to indian culture. he have to be innovative and create some different tunes.
I have no qusetions about his music talent. copying isn't the answer

It is possible if one has been listening to music of one MD for a long time, to know his style and predict the music to some extent.
.
It is the `skill' of hiding the recycling and making it look new everytime that makes some MDs special. As regards ARR's skills, his success speaks for itself.
Whether one MD is recycling more than another MD is a topic for a separate thread.

You have your answer in your posting. Recycling is done by every MDs, agreed. You know what their job is? They have to make like new everytime you listen. I believe you have listened to ARR's songs and when you hear them, don't you feel like you're sitting inside a recyling bin and getting all the same old stuff????

A serious music afficionado looking for some humor in this thread, also looking for some serious answers on some key life preserving issues: May I Beginu?
I want to give my humble and sometimes very pleasing, servile opinion on the title or the subject matter of this thread about Shri ARR, an esteemed Recycling Institution in the 'areas' around old and already used music.
May I? I mean, May I Sir (Or, May Madam)?
The title sould read: Is ARR Running After Stuff?
Now please continue any enlightening discusun on this confusing issue.
Thank you. May God Bless Us All.

kuluvAlilE from Muthu nay Sister Act (English movie). KuluvAlilE had the same tune, beats, etc., the lyrics were different. Guys can watch the movie by Woopie Goldberg on video and get the feel of it.
Chinna Chinna Aasai 'beat' from Roja was total 'inspiration' from the song (beat!)"We Do What We Are Told' by Peter Gabriel!
He is a damn good arranger, hats off to him. As PG had mentioned elsewhere,
"give him a beat
you are in for a treat"
He never appends like DEva. There is the canny ability of ARR. He uses all kinds of music on earth to get the effect. East and West meet at ARR's panchaththan inn i believe. In my maiden global venture, i would not repeat my tunes, and give any reasoning like the one ARR gives. You know that many of his songs are quite popular almost all over the country. Then, why give the same stuff? Why didnt you try something new? Because you are worried about failing!! Thats human. Thats acceptable. You try to get into 'the zone' of victory for best results, be it music or sports or movie making or.........
This quality of being different separates the ordinary from the extraordinary. After 700 odd movies, one guy is inducing hypnosis with his tunes!! One guy recycles, lifts, etc., in 50 or plus of his ventures. It is the very thought of being "different" from IR, that made ARR commit mistakes, I believe.
The sad part of the story is the mass. "We dont care whether its recycled or lifted or ......as long as it is not that eccentric, ego-filled IR, we are happy. So, as already been discussed n power n times, there has been no replacement for IRs music yet(and thats the sad part where we music lovers are the losers). It has been only the replacement of personality, music having hit the nadir, in the process.
"......is basically copying western music and doctering the music to indian culture....."
That sums it up.

Raja_m:
ARR has good grounding in western music. ???
Dont stoop the level of western music by hearing to a couple of beats and keyborard pushes. Well, ARR is like MICROSOFT where everything is borrowed or stolen stuff, while our beloved IR is IBM, where everything originated, and was home to most of the computer gurus, in networking, database deisgn, hardware....etc and marketing was not there job at all. Hope you get the point.
