I am great fan of both IR, ARR, but with most of ARR's albums, you will have to listen to it over & over again to like the tune, but this was (not now) not the case with IR songs.
take Baba for instance, I never liked it initialy but I started to like the songs, once I have listen to it several times?
Why ARR's music does NOT make an impact on the very first instance of listening?

I listened several times, but still I am not able to like Baba songs. If you are sayint that you like baba songs, then I think you are cheating yourself. Can you belive this much money for these type of songs??. If you like baba songs, then all the songs from other movies are also good.

I am not the kinda guy who appreciates any junky stuff. Instead of saying I hate ARR(music), say you like ARR to the core. That may justify your statement. What's that I come up in life blah blah..Check your bp man?

Annamalai, Arunachalam, Padayappa and Baba?

I c what u mean, ARR + Rajni combo is not very good, hence I would say
1) Annamalai > Arunachalam > padaiyappa > baba
but, hey let's stick to the thread & leave super * out of it, hehe :)

Movie hysteria: Rajnikant fans await the Aug 15 release of Baba
"…for us a Rajnikant release is like Diwali, or Pongal. He is our leader and hero, his film is everything for us…"
Sunday, August 4, 2002 (Chennai):
Rajnikant Fans across Tamil Nadu are gearing up for August 15. Not just to celebrate Independence Day, but also for the release of the super stars film Baba .
Rajnikant's last release was Padayappa in 1999. And Baba is his much hyped come back movie all set to hit over a hundred theaters in Tamil Nadu on August 15.
The movie, scripted by the star himself has music by A R Rahman and has already sold more than 4.5 lakh cassettes.
"The audio response has been good and we are sure the film will be a hit," says Poonam Chowdhary of Star Music.
And Rajnikant's fans have already started queuing up with special Baba coupons which gives them preference while buying tickets.
While a Rajnikant movie usually guarantees some politically charged dialogues, fans hope that Baba, scripted by the star himself, would finally answer speculation about Rajnikant's entry into politics.
"Tell us. Tell us in one word that you are entering politics. We are dying to hoist your flag and fulfill your dream," exclaims a fan.
"For us a Rajnikant release is like Diwali or Pongal. He is our leader and hero. His film is everything for us," says another upbeat fan.
But even before it's release Baba has had it's share of controversies. Some Dravidian groups had objected to a particular song in the movie. And Rajnikant even had the song rewritten to avoid a confrontation.
Though for Rajnikant's fans nothing seems to matter as long as they get to watch the movie 'first day first show'.

No doubt ARR is a Good and sometimes Very good. But it is too much hype going on for BABA. I'm not able enjoy the songs but for Raajyama and Baba kichu thaa.
Why people force themselves to say the songs are good. The way shankar mahadevan pronounces BABA is anoying. I'm happy that Sukwinder did not sing the song.
My guess is that ARR did not show commitment towards BABA songs. None of the songs can go near Oruvan Oruvan Mudhalaali, Kuluvaalile, Singa Nadai potu.

Good music need not always make best impression at the first hearing. Music is both for our pleasure and our appreciation. And sometimes, the more knowledgeable and more talented ur, the less time it takes to appreciate a piece.
When i first heard the song Jagada Jagadam from the telugu movie geethanjali (Idayathey Thirudaathey, not sure of the song name in tamil, cud be vidiya vidiya), I cud not notice that the scale is not the usual minor scale, (theres a half note after the tonic (Sa), instead of the usual full note). Then it was wrong with my ear, not the music. But if ur ear is so trained, u cud have got that difference then and there. Another example is the Kannathil Muthamittal title song. Another different kind of song is Kathal rojave, none of SPB's lines end on the notes of the tonic chord. A person who is not familiar abt counterpoint, may not appreciate the interludes in Sangeetha Megam or Edhedho ennam. So as far my experiences count, talent and knowledge do help in appreciating a song better, and it does take time sometimes.
So a humble request to u: if u don find a song interesting, try givin it a couple of hearings, and if u still don like it, ignore it and listen to the ones u like, instead of wasting time to call others names.

Well !!! yea mr. i gave a couple of hearings it still sucks!! But the songs have more scope to make fun of!!

Dude JJ, I never talked abt the Baba songs above. I was just talkin in general, responding to ur opinion that a song has to be liked at the first hearing.
Now on a second thought, I wonder why I ever wanted to get into an arguement with you. Sorry to bother u.

In response to the above topic..
Well what I personaly feel is, ARR uses a lot of fusion in his music. His songs hardly fall in to one particular pattern (Raaga).
Such music will always take time to make an impact on an average listener, who is so used to the tunes of MSV and IR who always stick to a particular pattern.
This explains another point, for the listeners who are used to the western/fusion music, ARR songs will be good even at the first instance of listening. Thats why his songs are so popular internationally.
Finally.. there is nothing wrong with ARR songs, its just that the listeners of his songs are not used to this type of music.

on: Mon Aug 5 19:46:37 EDT 2002
I would like to add, MAJORITY of his listeners are not used to his type of music.
