Each music director has his trump card singer. Obviously the two music directors who have ruled India are Ilaiyaraja & R D Burman, even though they were catering to a different set of audiences. Both of them had experimented heavily on their respective favourite singers - S Janaki and Asha respectively. While I always feel that IR-SJ combination is terrific, all my North Indian friends feel that there can never be a combination like RDB-AB. What do you think? I do not want a TFM-HFM war here

Hi, I am a Northie here. I frankly feel the IR-SJ combination stands out. IR was a genius. RDB was quite a copy-cat. The number of songs he has copied is quite a bit. Moreover I like SJ as a singer a bit more than Asha.
RDB has composed very few classical songs, unlike IR who has really studied classical music in depth - both Carnatic and Western.

I feel there is no one in this world to give music other than Burman da. Burman da is the best and hence RDB-AB combination is best

this is going to be a real good thread...if we all participate with good intentions... & arguments..
RDB is revered in HFm, personally i do not know which song sbelongs to RD, even though i listen to hindhi songs...may be he did not have a unique feel of his songs as IR had... IMO.
SJ & asha...i feell asha is better...SJ shrieks some times at high pitches...

Undoubtedly IR-SJ combination stands beyond comparison for the simple reason being IR's versatile compositions and the variety of songs he had delivered. Can any body imagine a song like idu oru nila kalam from tick tick tick or azhagu ayiram from ullasa paravaigal or Ponvaanam panner thoovuthu from Indru nee nalai naan...
RD is certainly a good composer and his songs with AB are hits. What is the variety he has shown ? People say that he was a trend setter in terms of popularising western music.
IR is a less influenced composer as compared to others and he introduced a new harmony to the film music and hence his combination with SJ were outstanding be it classical or any other form of music.
Since HFM has an international acclamation RDB& AB are talked about so much...

Kadavule...Thanoda keech kuralal SJ has spoilt more than 50% of IR songs...IR kku even in those days people used to say in many songs music sound out beats singer's voice...because of SJ's shrill voice...SJ IR combination oru SAABHAM...Pala nalla paadalgalai Janaki Kolai panniyerukka....Asha...RD....emotional,romantic, fullof feelings combination...

TNS,
Asha is anyday better than Janaki and Ilaiyaraja is anyday better than RD Burman. But I think as a combination IR-SJ score over RDB-AB

Other good combinations very much comparable to above combinations:
1)Vani Jayaram with MSV,Vijaybhaskar,KVM,Shankar Ganesh.
2)Lata (till the early 80s) with almost every MD including RD BURMAN who almost always semiclassical/sad songs to Lata.

RDB is a good MD and we accept it. But IR's case is different. He proved himself out of film music also.

Hello, I myself ama Northie. Inspite of that, I will tell u that IR was original and versatile - his domain extends beyond filmi stuff to Carnatic,WCM, even Hindustani. RDB was quite a copycat and many of his songs are junk.
SJ vs Asha - well thats subjective

Dear Northie who commented that half of IR's
songs are junk.....You people patronise the cheap
copycats like AnuMallik who inturn gets songs from
IR. We all know what kind of music click in north.
You still keep listening to cheap melodies like
HUm Ko Humeese and KKKG type o family songs
and make them resounding successes. Name 10 albums
which have a classical touch that are superhits
in North and then talk of IR. One of the North Indian veterans, Naushad Ali
has said he has a lot to learn from IR. Dear buddy,
first learn what is true music and then dare commenting
on the Maestro. As long as you appreciate the
baby songs of Anu Mallik and Jatin Lalit, you
can never realise the potential of IR.

The RD /IR issue is subjective....but RDB was a exceptional composer ...just listen to 1942 ..love story...what grace..what music ..what a parting shot by the great RDB....
HAs IR given anythign like 1942...???

IR has given better music than that of 1942. His
Geethanjali is an excellent love-musical.
Guna, Kalapani, Mauna Ragam all of them have got
gracious love songs.

Classical scores in the North existed in large nos. till the 80s in case u do not know, many by RDB. Try this one song by Manna Dey from "Mehbooba" if u wish - "gori tori paijaniyaan".
http://musicindiaonline.com/music/l/XX01000C0Y
Also try Kinara,Aandhi,Khushboo,Khubsoorat,Chhote Nawaab,Dil Padosi Hai(listen to asha's 'bheeni bheeni'.. http://musicindiaonline.com/music/l/02010002) - all by RDB - all classical based scores.

I think the comparison is quite stupid. IR has been an ardent RDB fan and RDB could have been aninspiration for IR in few of the songs eg. "En purushanthan, ennaku mattum thaan" is an inspiration from "dum are dum" ( hare rama hare krishna) and vice-versa for RDB. Both were geniuses in their own right. There are equal no. of hits (both western and indian classical) given by RDB-AB and IR-SJ combos. I am an ardent fan of both the MD's and have never thought to compare these two. Remarks that SJ has shrill voice in high pitches is an insinuation. Both SJ and AB were equally versatile. Then why the comparison? Even if we set them on a level playing field, we are going to have a stalemate!

Guru, if what you are saying is correct then no one should compare IR and ARR also. Listen, here we are not comparing IR and RDB, rather we are comparing the combination of IR with SJ and that of RDB with AB. Since most of the TFM listeners are not exposed to HFM (coincidentally, thanks to IR), they will not appreciate this. But the same is true with HFM listeners also. So this is a forum where you know both about TFM and HFM and are comparing them.
