During the era of Kannadhasan, there used to be plenty of such soothing melodic numbers. I can recall a few:
Gangai Karai Thotam - P. Suseela
Keittathum Kodupavaney - TMS
Punnagai Mannan - PS & ??
Kannan Piranthan - TMS & PS
Kanna Karumainira Kanna - PS
Raman Ethanai Ramanadi - PS

There have been very few of such songs lately, except for Deva's Gokulathil Kannas (A wonderful feel-good song) Could some of you list some new and old Kannan songs?

For your first query, Kannanum avaney Ramanum avaney - neengal sollum Gopiyar konjum ramananum avaney. What I meant by Kannan was that He was the ishta deivam of Kannadasan and therefore he wrote several songs on Him. After his demise, there is hardly many songs on Kannan (or His reincarnations).
On your second query, yes athu punaip peyarthaan. Why Valen and not Velan - Adiyein puthumeiyei virumbupavan - Pronunciationilum Valen thaan sirappa irukkuthu allervaa?

Listen to these songs and listen to IMO junk songs like Thaye Yashodha undhan in Carnatic. Kannadhasan was a class apart. My useless carnatic songs have pouplarity just because of the snob-appeal.

BITS Paddy,
"aayarpaadi", "pullaankuzhal", etc songs are from a devotional
album called Krishna gaanam by MSV.

It may be your opinion, but dont call carnatic music "junk",
"useless". It may be that you are not able to appreciate
the thodi in "thaaye yasodha" and the way it is delivered.
If you are interested, listen to "Krishna gaanam Vol I & II"
by T.N. Sheshagopalan (this is different from MSV's).
You'll then understand the greatness of Oothukkaadu
subbayyer songs.
These two are light carnatic albums, for easy listening.

I think we should exclude thanipaadalgal from this list.Besides other wonderful songs, Aayar Paadi Maaligaiyil and Pullangkuzhal Koduthe are indeed from an album titled "Sri Krishna Ganam" music by MSV and lyrics by Kannadhasan, released somewhere in the late 70s.

Aanaa yenakku innum thaagam theeravilleiyeh! The beauty of Kannan songs are the emotions they evoke, especially those of the Kannadhasan era.
As for Murugan (Tamil Kadavul allerva) songs, your list is great but maybe we should start a separate forum on this.
BTW, have you listened to Mahanadhi Shobana's album, Bakthi Chudar. It is produced in digital sound quallity and has a lot of songs of P. Susila that you have listed. For once we get to hear the complete ending of each song. You would however, have to get used to her voice:-))

Another Kannan song from a really old movie;
kAthiruppan kamalakannan - sung by MLV?
Mentioning kannkku kulam eadhu, kanna as a
kannan song is a bit too much - the song is not about kannan. Also if 'Nammavoorvalen' is still thirsty for kannan songs and can listen to some non-filmy songs, try kannan songs by either Sudha Raghunathan or Maharajapuram, lyrics by oothukkadu venkatasubramanya iyer.

It is my opinion but here is some clarification :

None of the carnatic (tamil) songs have the beauty of Kannadasan's kannan songs. Most of the carnatic songs in tamil have no lyrical beauty.

Carnatic singers have always had a step-motherly attitude towards sahityams in Tamil. There are innumerable film songs which are much much superior to carnatic songs.

Look at MS's Tamil songs. I have heard her Tamil songs from Meera/Shakuntala etc and her diction is sorry to say lousy. It may have the greatest of swara laya but if you cannot sing properly in your mothertongue how are you going to sing in Telegu-Sanskrit. Listen to DKPattammal singing 'Aaduvome Pallu Paaduvome' (Bharathiyar) in Naam Iruvar. She has no idea what she is singing - she sings it as 'Aaduvome palli paaduvome'. MS and DKPattammal are at the top of the rung in carnatic music and this is the sorry state of their diction. KJYesudas gets rapped for his la-lla-zha pronunciation in TFM songs but here we see the doyens of carnatic music going uncriticised. They are holy-cows - woe to them who dare criticise them. (I have not seen a single bad criticism about MS till now).

Sahitya-suddham is supposed to be very important in carnatic music. Does anybody care ? I suppose that if Thodi is OK the song does not need to have real feeling behind it.

Listen to Pullanguzhal kodutha - you can feel Kannadasan's feeling behind it. Is it the case with carnatic songs ? In my opinion they are not. (I don't understand Telegu/Sanskrit. I can talk only about carnatic songs in Tamil).

I am new to the discussion forum (but not to the TFM - a silent observer up to now) Am I welcome here?
After looking at the various comments, I think the poster(!) of this query wants a list of songs related to Kannan, but not neccessarily devotional songs. If that is the case, we should not include any non-film songs and even those from religious movies.
Agreed that Kannuku kulamethu kanna is not a Kannan song even by the widest stretch of imagination. In fact in the movie, it is sung to Karnan, the "enemy" of Kannan. Trust Kannadhasan to use "kanna" here!

Indha "Kannan" peyar patri enakku oru doubt.
Obviously it is not a Sanskrit name borrowed
into Tamil; rather, because the original
name "Krishna" had this "sh" sound non-existent
in Tamil, some "theevira" Thamizhan
invented a new name for Krishna. Who was
this originator of this beautiful name, "Kannan"
and how did he come upon this name? Can someone
enlighten me on this matter? (Was it Mahakavi
Bharathiyar, or, did the name "Kannan" exist
in the Tamil literature even earlier to his
work? BTW, aren't there any of Bharathiyar's
Kannan songs in TFM?)

Kannadhasan's Kannan songs were romantic (Kanna varuvaaya), devotional (Kehtethum kodupavanney) and heart-wretching (Kanna karumeinira Kanna) We don't have such songs any more, do we? I love the song you mentioned: Alai paayuthey Kanna yen manam miga alaipaayuthey. If I am not mistaken it is from the movie Karaiyellam Shenbagapoo. There is also another version in Alaigal Voivathillei. More details please.

"Karnan devoted to Krishna?" This is something new. Please elaborate. The word "Kanna" is used affectionately by lovers (not by wives on husbands!) and towards babies and children.

I don't think Kanna is a pure Tamil name. Remember vadakku's Rajesh Khanna and so forth. There must be plenty of Bharathiyar songs on Kannan. Although he was a devotee of Ambal, he was in actual fact in love with Kannan! He preferred to see Kannan in a female form. And that's how Kannamma was born. And all his songs with Kannamma in them;-)

The name Kannan can be found in 'Thiruppavai' by Andal, a devotee of Krishna. I think Andal belonged to 18th or 19th century.

Clarification on 'Kannan' name for Karnan :

Karnan also had another name 'Kannan' with a 2-suzhi na as opposed to 3-suzhi na for Krishnan. Probably Kannadhasan was using this Kannan as opposed to KaNNan for Krishna.

To Kanchana:
I would term "Kanna" to be a word used to call a lover/husband (male only) or a child. It is more lovable to call a male child as Kanna because it reminds of the same "theeratha vilayattu pillai Kannan".

is a Bharathi song in TFM. I simply love this beautiful ragamalika

To Kanchana: Love usually ends in marriage and literally too! Try calling your husband (if you are married) Kanna and see what happens! BTW, having gone through the other forums and this as well, you come across as a knowledgeable person in TFM, Keep on contributing.

Nammaooru:
I think Karnan had the ability to see through
people and determine their true nature; he
detected Indra when he came in disguise to
get the kavacham away from Karnan. Again, when
Karna lay on the battle-field and could not
die because of all the dharma he had done in
his life, and Krishna came as a brahmin to
ask for his "dharma" as pitchai, Karnan
recognized him. Similarly, he very much
knew the divine nature of Krishna and knew
very well who was going to win the war.

Some corrections are needed to your posting.
1. Karnan was advised by Surian (his father) on Indra's disguise.
2. Karnan is known as "kodai vallal". The last act before his death was his donation of his "punniyam" to Krishna in disguise.
3. Because of his act (no. 2 above) Krishna revealed his true self as Maha Vishnu and absolved Karna of all sins.
Conclusion: Karnan didn't have any foresight on Krishna and it would be wrong to say that he was devoted to Krishna. Any other thoughts on this subject???

To: P.Ganesan:
Just like Sathya, this is the first time I am hearing about chinna/periya "na"- for Kannan and Karnan. Please elaborate.

As I mentioned before, Karna had another name Kannan with a chinna 'na'.

Everybody in Mahabharat had a multitude of names and Karna had this one. Might have been a kaaranap peyar but I am not sure. (I am sure Karna had this name though I cannot quote any book on this). Rajaji's Vyasar Virundhu or Villi Bhaaratham might have some references.

I agree with PG. Kannan songs should have something that relates to Lord Krishna in one or the other way.

For example, the song
"kannan vandhu padukindran kalamellam
Kanni enna kobam endran kadhal sonnan
Katril kuzhaal osai ketkam poomedai mele"
will seem like an irrelevant Kannan song.

But you see all the attributes and objects related to Kannan are mentioned in the lyrics.

To Kanchana:
I am sorry to say that it is very difficult to accept "Valarndha kadhai marandhuvittal enada kanna " as a Kannan song.

In the KANNAN songs you have listed I feel that
songs numbered 5,12,18,27 does not relate to Kannan at all. The word "Kanna" is used for addressing a lover or a person other than the Lord.

The songs numbered 36,37 are totally related to Lord Rama.

A question:
Is the song "Engirundho vandhan idaijadhi naan endran - S.Govind (Padikkaadha Medhai)" really
a Kannan song or it's kandhan song?
I guess Sivaji's name is kandhan in that film
and song goes like 'kandhan kandhan'! I'm not sure! Anyone, please listen to this song and clarify this!

You are definitely late to join this topic. Please read my comment in the beginning about how you can qualify a song as a Kannan song.

And, "engirundho vandhan idai jadhi naan endran" - is 100% Kannan song which explains the very nature of Lord Krishna an his leelaigal. The Lord's some qualities were compared to the Hero(Shivaji's or Kandhan's) nature in the song .
I think this song has some lines which were imported from Mahakavi Bharathiyar's kavidhaigal on Kannan.

another classic one. But you might dispute on this song. It was sung in character by Kannan Himself on his way to liberate the soul of Karnan by takin g away his punniyam in the battlefield.

gosh! I didn't know such a exist in the net. Unfortunately it,s to late to join. Most of the songs i know is already in the list. May be i can contribute a little. There's one song in Vithavai Kolam sung by SJ- Kannan nalum podum vedham.
there's one more song by SJ,it starts like Radhakrishna... vizhigalil anantham...if i'm not mistaken under MD Syam. Can anyone please the me the title of this movie?

I am also late joiner to this forum. Some thought about Kanna neeyum nanuma? I think this purly on Kannan. I am one of the lovers of Kannadasan's songs. I clearly see Kannadasan confronts with Kannan which he does always. He brings the God (kadavul) to his songs and puts the blame for his misdeeds on him.
( like in unnai cholli kutramillai). So, even in this song, it is about Kannan. Devotional songs need not be a song that praises God. The best I like about Hindu religion is that God/Godess need not be always above you. He could be your friend, lover or son or anybody else. I am a Christian, but am great lover of Kannan, primarily due to Kannadasan.
We need to look at the lyrics if this qualifies as Kannan song or not.
