mediocre compositions, it is time to bring him down.
For starters: songs from Lovebirds, Indian ,

I would not consider Thanga Thamarai Magaley as
a worst song.

His worst as far as I go will be Romeo Attam
(Mr.Romeo), almost all of Love Birds, the song
celebrating Independence in Indian, Thayin Manikodi (does not suit the mood of VandeMadaram),
vappati song in K.Seemaieley,Sonia Sonia (Ratchagan).. I stop here before I get pounced upon.

Somehow I don't like any of his new songs barring

ARR's worst is love birds. There is a song sung by someone (who probably has never spoken any Thamizh words prior to singing this..) especially these lines:
en "thamil" kettaal, thaNdavaaLam thuLirkkum..
"makkale..makkale".. tune-um maha erichchalaanathu..!

Another song, about magic, in the same movie; The worst ever interms of tune, lyrics or any aspect of a song. I was totally irritated to hear the lines kaNakku professor cOat-tuppaiyil, karuththadai saathanam irukkumE (lyrics, ubayam, vairamuthu ?) ennathaan students kalaatta paNNi magic seithu paaduRathaavE irunthaalum, ithu UNSAGIKKABLE..Tune? who remembers anyway?

Third one, is achchamillai in Indira. I somehow get the feeling of listening to a known jingle for popular brand washing powder. Needless to say the picturisation, may be Suhasini was "inspired" by the tune to make that song as a washing powder ad..! I know there are so many lovers for this song, I am sorry if I hurt their feelings..

Going back to some earlier songs - Pettai Rap (rendered in the horrible voice of Suresh Peters) was absolutely intolerable.

No guys, I find thangath thaamarai magale irritating. But the song manamadurai maamarak kilaiyilE quite OK. I have heard vennilave only twice or thrice. But it was fairly all right.

The title song of Rangeela (Asha Bhonsle) is another song that always gets on my nerves. So does kuchchi kuchchi raakkamma (aiyo! adikka varaadheenga!) where the children spoil the song.

Any other flames?

I too agree with U ,kuchikuchi rakkamma is one irritating number . In the rangeela song the voice of that devil (GV Prakash ) irritates me like anything .I like only the guitaring part of that song .

Thangathaamarai magale is a good song . U can see the emotions SPB shows in it if U keenly listen to the song .

OK, I will listen to the song a couple more times, but I wont promise an increase in the level of my rasanai. :-)

Reminds me of another horrible number by ARR : 'errathaani kurrathaani gopala'. I just couldnt stand the horrible dappaanguththu - was it the same ARR who was able to blend 'saavu mELam' in 'maanaamadurai' song so masterfully?

I am listening to 'soniya soniya' and 'nenje nenje' even as I write this (thanks to real audio :-) ) The songs are ok, udit narayan's and that of saadhna sargam are different and captivating, but there the praise stops. Is it only ARR who manages to get hold of singers with the most horrible accents? The way udit sings 'adh*a* asaivam' instead of 'adhu asaivam' and the way saadhna sings 'urUgi vidu' instead of 'urugi vidu' (where a kutriyalugaram becomes a mutriyalugaram :-) ) simply gets on your nerves. KJY has been grossly underused in the latter song, I feel. He sounds so weak, as if he is just convalescing from a bout of dengue (I havent seen the movie yet and dont know the situation of the song, but still ...)

Somebody else mentioned in this thread that the interlude in soniya soniya sounded like a cacophony. Hmmm... to me it sounded quite nice. With unnikrishnan going of with swaras and udit screaming his head off 'ammaa...' it was a very nice blend, I think. I think ARR somehow manages to get such cacophonies right - as in the rangeela song 'thanha thanha', 'ennavalE adi ennavalE' etc.

Nice to know about such a thread.To me except for a few songs in Roja,Gentleman,Puthiya mugam and duet,all of ARR's songs have been worst.I can't get a top ten worst songs list(!!!!!) so easily.

I think even the Vandhemataram album can be classified as junk.I had the misfortune of hearing to the best song(according to some threads) in that album Maa thuje salaam in an indian shop recently and I immediately gave salaam to that shop and moved out.

Who can forget Uyire Uyire song in Bombay? It will make you lose whatever patience you have.It's unfortunate that this guy is being talked about as Isai Puyal etc and some more junks like Deva are copying him andmagazines like India today have to rave and rant about him so much.

2. Parkathe parkathe(Gentlemen) -this song can make any die out of acute fits in the brain
3. Mustafa mustafa(Kadaldesam)- gosh!! this song can make any vomit blood
4. Petta rap (Khadalan)- is this a song in the place???? This is a pure clone of brain tumour cells!!!!!!
5. Minnale(May Madham)- my goodness! I think he composed this wonderful junk after meditating on an alien
6. Lucky Lucky(Rachagan)- I am very lucky indeed because I colud remain in sane after listening to songs like this!!!!!
7. Chathiranai toddathu yaar(Rachagan too)-What a junk by Hariharan? I pity him coz he could help this song. Poor thing songs like this works better than poison in cases of suicide!
8. Anjali anjali(Duet)- I really hate this song soooo much! It is like listening to the emergency brake screeching sound of a cheap rotten car!

A.R.RAHMAN is just a music writter, not a lyrics writter. I believe the man has studied music at a degree level, he deserve what he gets.
His music is way beyond anyone else.
Look at Anu Malik still at his old fashion keyboard, trying to find which preset is good, if they not good then will try to rip off RAHMAN's.
He does not have any ORIGINALITY.
What about Nadeem & Sharavan, haven't heard of brains, two brains makes one Anu Malik. There music is so pathetic that there still trying to figure is it year 1978 or 1998.
Illaraja, illaraja, the man who thinks the music is so cool that everybody hip-hops to the music,
could be true (being sarcastic). The man who thinks who tought A.R.RAHMAN how to play music, which doesn't realise he cannot play for him self, what a shame, doesn't realise or should I say couldn't admit RAHMAN is better than him.
I could go on forever and ever critising other music composers, RAHMAN is not a ametuer who can be competed with em.. Indian fictinous composers or comic characters like Illaraja, Anu malik, Nadeem & Sharavan. RAHMAN is a man who has studied life and style of Motzart, Beetoven, Czychosky....Who can be competed with them if they were alive. At this moment I believe he is a young genius, I never heard such Indian music like that.
One thing which makes his music unique, mixing Indian and Western together to form 1990's. I could go on forever..........................

Well if guys think Minsara Kanavu is junk then there is nothing much to argue. I am sure there will threads in this forum where people will be raving about raja's fresh(!!)innovative compositions in Veera Thalatu. Afterall we cannot debate something that is very subjective.

To me rahman is one of the best composer I have listened to. IR fans accept it or not there are a lot of people who are simply love rahmans music.

ARR is not good in 96 onwards.. Sply. When he started using people who don't know Thamizh or who don't know how to use 'zha' and 'La'. What ARR did, same mistake Karthikraja is also doing. In one film 'Velai' almost 2 or 3 songs sung by Udith Narayan. Kodumaippa.
Udith may be a good singer for Hindi, but not for Tamil.

BTW don't compare one MD with other. It is realy stupid (sorry to use this word). Oruthar periya -aaLa? illaiyangaradha andha andha MD-yoda RasigargaL, avaroda growth clean-a sollum. IR-a paththi avar kitta irukkira thappa sollunga moththa TFM-a adikka varum. avanga oththukkavE mattanga. enna paNNaradhu. vEEna tharkam, flames etc.. thevaiya???

Say what you all want to say,but if you ask me ARR is a quality music composer.He puts a lot into a song and his tunes get more melidious as time goes.I would certainly disagree with people who say that Minsara Kanavu's only good song was Venilvae venilvae.What about Ooh la la ! Poo Pookum & Anbendra. They are all very good songs.People who don't know how to appriciate these songs are a bunch of disgraced music listeners.

My God! I'm shocked to come across this pg. ARR has brought Indian music to new hights. Come on we youngsters live in the morden generation & if we change according to fashion, why can't music change too. Anyway, most of u all are critising the lyrics when ARR is just the music director. DUH! Most of IR's fans can't appriciate his songs coz they're all just plain all fashioned & not at all contemprorary! Even here in S'pore,Indian fans just flock to the cinemas where movies wth his song direction are screened. Fair enough I would admit there might be one or two songs that may not live up to his standards but they're all a far cry from all his hits.

Reminded of this after reading comments about 'Thangathaamarai magale':

SPB was here in SF bay area for a concert, and was singing for fans' requests. One of'em was this song. He said 'Hmm.. indha paattukku national award kuduthirukkaanga! Aanaa yedhukku kuduthaangannuthaan enakku puriyalai! Idhai vida nalla song-llaam irukku. Sari.. edho award vaangina paatungarathinaala neenga aasai pattu kaettirukkeenga.. adhnaal ippa paadaren.' Also, you should've seen his face when he was singing this song! Man.. he sung as though he was in absolute disgust to sing it!

what about some more meaningful bashing/campaigns? such as, on a mega-something show hosted by the ever-loud ruby bhatia, there is a "star-of-the-millennium public poll which completely forgot that there is a world beyond bollywood... they are doing a great service to cultural hegemony and divisiveness.. the legitimization of hindi and others being irrelevant... how about some action on that??

I read some of the comments on arr music.This is my answer to their questions.I am a diehard fan of ARR ,but it does not means that i hates IR music.IR is a great musician.His old melodies are still pleasing..
Rahman may not be the best there was,best there ever would be ,but he is the best there is!!!!!!!!!!!.I am not a fan of tamil music untill rahman smashed the music scene.I like almost all of his songs and likes his music very much.In the case of IR ,he is one of the best music dir of indian music.
Actually it is not fair to compare 2 music directors who are in two entirely different poles. IR is cool4 his melodies ,duets .......Arr is best 4 his love songs,western songs& the songs which all of u calls as dialogues..Hey guys songs are made according to the situations in the movie,it is not fair to blame the music dir 4 his song's poor lyrics.
I read some comments on Vandemathram Hey how can u call it as junk ??? Arr faced lots of criticism on this album,but does any one know that there are lot of hindi albums in which there are re -mixed version of songslike "Raghupathi raja ram" which was one of the most important song indian independnce history...Any music fans heard it??? What rahman did on vandematharam was to show his own intrepretation on our country's past history cultutre,music etc.
A word on songs like soniya,soniya,Pettrap ......i accept they are not all good .but hear some songs of the same kind[they call it TAPPANKOOTHE] from other various music dir .U will feel the diffrence!!!
Creating music is not an easy thing ,it needs hard work,knowledge,patience etc.Using computer aided music is not bad.It only enriches the Music.[if we can use computres 4 our jobs why can't he???!!] Music is to hear ,to enjoy that's it.A geniune music fan shoud hear & enjoy all kinds of songs without thinking about where it is comming from or who is bringing it!!!!
Lifting tunes is not good 4 music .But using the same beat 4 a song cannot be called as copying.Unfortunately i could not here those song which people says arr lifted tunes. so i am not commenting on it

Hey !! i agree that arr is good!! But if anyone
compare with King of Music IR, i will only be on
the side of the later. Hey who scored more than 790 films within 25 years!!

Politicians made politics in announcing padmashree award too. Last week,arr has been awarded padmashree.IR, the first person in Asia
to play symphony and also the gold medalist from Trinity college of london. Hey! another joke is the filmfare award is for mudalvan. What about Sethu? Some guys wrote that arr is best for love songs. IR is master in all type of songs esp love.

Seriously, most of A.R.Rahman's music is really good. But he is not perfect, like everyone else.That also goes for IR. He was the best once but right now he has no clue what is selling. Some of IR's songs are good but not all. AR's songs are selling the most and almost everyone who hears AR's stuff enjoy it. Know that AR is not the learner, he is the trend-setter. If you'd like to argue that, bring it on(send me an E-mail).
As music fans, all of us should just enjoy good songs, melodies and good MDs(that is AR and IR).
But know that the BEST currently is AR...later!

Just I like the way the music gets in to my mind and soothes all my pains and relieves all my tension.
It's not ARR or any personality to be admired but the music itself.
ARR has also given worst and best.
He is also doing some cut n paste from english ablums etc..
Just like the music the way it comes.

Some of A.R songs are not so good but many songs are very good.You should be able to enjoy any type of music,Rangeelare song is a very good song
Certain songs sung by people like suresh peters are not so good.But see,.. Mujhe rangthey from Thakshak,Jiya jale from dilse also other songs from Zubeidaa and Thakshak are very good,though I don't understand hindi I love these songs

tamils can't speak proper tamil nor pronounce properly.
