OK. IR hasn't fulfilled his fans expectations for the last 10 years (none of the above songs falls within the last 10 years timeframe). So can we all talk about what IR's hardcore Fan's should do now to satisfy (like "listen to IR's old songs again & again for the rest of their life", or something like that...).

IR brought out the first Stereo recording in tfm and took the recording style in tfm to a new plane. that put tfm on par with hindi film music (and a long way behind international stuff). Qualities of sound outputs have changed and have become better. today, IR is behind in this aspect and has to catch up.

STRINGS! STRINGS! STRINGS! - the day IR ignored to use the string section in his songs (with the exception of a few like "ORU naal" from Devadhai, HEY RAM songs), his music has lost its soul - we, at least I want IR to go back and use the heavy strings section that is his hallmark

Yes !!! It is disappointing that IR has moved from the heavy use of strings in his early songs like chamber orchestra. His powder lies in use of live string instruments in recording and bring a beautiful songs such as "Madai thirandhu.." in Nizhalhal (strings including chello, violin and guitar) and "Kala Kalamaga Vazhum.." in Punnagai Mannan !!! Whoever played that solo violin in the latter song that almost dominates the whole song and the base guitar that challenges it in that song !!! It is a magic !!! I can't think of any other song that IR composed so well with just a single violin !!!

I think it was Karthikraja who spoilt IR's arrangements and still spoiling his songs. Even in en mana vaanil, I can see IR's touches here and there and KR's arrangements spoil the tunes. I wish he goes back to his roaring violins and guitar strings .....

opening music - pallavi - interlude1 - saranam1 - pallavi again - interlude2 - saranam2 - pallavi again.
this music trend being followed/repeated again and again in tfm. kEttu kEttu puzhichchu pochu. with hope after hope we are looking for an album which will break this tradition and present a new style of music - not necessary that all songs are to start with the pallavi tune. IR can do it in style, with lots of STRINGS!

I was listening to the song of the day - Rojavai Thaalattum Thendral. The recording is good. What a beautiful bass guitar in the background. Mentally switch of SPB and SJ and just listen to the bass guitar go throughout the song.

My vote goes for the bass guitar (like Jeera). I am listening to older albums of IR now on LPs directly...wow wow..and if I have to place it on an instrument it is the bass guitar..BTW, most albums which dont sound good on CD sound really nice on LP, so I think the analog master tape to CD conversion was not done right.
I hope one of my friends who has access to the Maestro can show this thread to him.

sabesan ..tabla is used now and then..but mridhangam is not there ..IR uses mridhangam in a different way ..sounds pretty cool..andhi mazhai pozhigarathu for eg. another one would be the laali song in sippikkuL muthu. I once started a thread on IR's mridhangam songs here. Now that we are talking about percussion. IRs best experiments recently are in kaathal jathi (predominantly single drum for the whole song) and kochu kochu santhoshangal in malayalam where modern beats are used with carnatic melodies. There is one song ('gana shaya brindaranyam or something like that) where the percussion accompaniment changes for every line.
In earlier years, IR used a combination of percussion instruments not just different ones for pallavi/charanam/interlude but at the same time (concurrently). This gave a different feel to each and every song.
(LP is short for long playing record. I recently have bought a record player/turntable and my brother sent me a bunch of records from chennai acquired from a shop called 'old is gold' :). I like the sound of LP better than CD !!!!!!)

Conditions?
Who is anyone to put conditions on IR's composing style? And why would he oblige to such conditions?
Let the man do what he likes. He doesn't have to please any one.

Teja:
"Who is anyone to put conditions on IR's composing style? And why would he oblige to such conditions?
Let the man do what he likes. He doesn't have to please any one."
These are some of the reasons for him to check out the conditions.
"1. will be writing the whole song "
As long as it is good I dont care.
"2. he cannot use crap lyricist like VM "
Well well, who is the 'great' lyricst with whom he is working now?
"3. Work with leading directors"
If he does that, he will get publicity and people would know that he is still in the field. Thereby more people will contact him for compostions. (ofcourse the fans will say he is 'selective' nowadays).
"4. he will continue singing"
Each person has his own destiny. IR can compose well and there are others who are a 100 times talented than IR. So there is absolutely no need for him to resort to singing.
"5. he will use bhavadharini "
What 'good' quality in her voice did IR find to use her?
"6. Stop listening to "Jalra" parties - Eg:
RajKiran, Ramarajan "
I dont think they are making movies nowadays.
"7. ego cannot be shed
....then what?"
If he cannot do that then there is no future for IR. Before he could show his ego to anyone as there was no choice for a composer then. But now there are many others who have fared better than IR recently. Therefore showing ego would definitely close his future.

"Well well, who is the 'great' lyricst with whom he is working now? "
VM is not the only great lyricst in TFM.
"If he does that, he will get publicity and people would know that he is still in the field. Thereby more people will contact him for compostions. (ofcourse the fans will say he is 'selective' nowadays). "
First of all, you don't know the facts. If we were to go by the buzz, then this is the man who has rejected many Kamal and Rajini movies.
" Each person has his own destiny. IR can compose well and there are others who are a 100 times talented than IR. So there is absolutely no need for him to resort to singing."
And so Udit narayan and his goons should be allowed to rule TFM. FYI, IR's singing is way more soulful than these dabba singers. And its not like he tries to sing each of his songs himself. And, if you don't like his singing its a personal preference, just as I don't like udit's singing.
" What 'good' quality in her voice did IR find to use her? "
Tha same good quality ARR/VS/SAR found in Sukhivinder Singh. What is the need to question an MD's singing preferences? So, a father is trying to get his daughter recognition, what's wrong?
And if I remember right she is a national award winner. Hey, maybe you don't like her voice, but someone does.
"If he cannot do that then there is no future for IR. Before he could show his ego to anyone as there was no choice for a composer then. But now there are many others who have fared better than IR recently. Therefore showing ego would definitely close his future."
Do you really know his ego is high? So, he does not suck up to the hypocritic film directors, producers and mass media, does that make him egoistic? This is the same man who fell on the feet of Sri Semmangudi Iyer and MSV in a public function. There are testimonials of young and older singers (ref. many interviews) who tell how warm and down to the earth person he is. There is a thin line between sincerity and egoism, which I don't think you have recognized.
In the past few years he has done Hey Ram, Kutty, Sethu, Azhagi, Kasi, Ramana, Sandiyar, Solla Marandha Kadhai, Nizhalkutthu, Manasinakkare etc. Does this seem like a career graph of a person who is not getting chances?
Mr. Guess Me you had better get your facts right before posting. IR is a person who deserves all the accolades his fans shower on him and any non-sense propaganda will not change that fact.

"IR is a person who deserves all the accolades"
Indeed. I agree to that. In terms of quality he is legend. But it is not good for his fans to hide his recent lack-lustre performance in TFM. So is the case of Bhavadharani. I wont think even all the IR fans in here would like her singing. She would undoubtedly be the tamil born singer who has the least no.of fans in Tamil Nadu.
"There are testimonials of young and older singers (ref. many interviews) who tell how warm and down to the earth person he is."
May be. But there are more no.of directors and producers who tell how high his ego is.
"In the past few years he has done Hey Ram, Kutty, Sethu, Azhagi, Kasi, Ramana, Sandiyar, Solla Marandha Kadhai, Nizhalkutthu, Manasinakkare etc. Does this seem like a career graph of a person who is not getting chances? "
Mr. Note Man, in terms of the no.of movies, Deva will beat IR (in the last decade). Does that mean that Deva is anywhere close to IR? Out of the movies you listed, how many have songs which have been featured in top 10 charts, or voted by people as the best or those which created sales record? How many movies became commercially successful? And the few which did, it would well be a success even without the songs. In some cases the songs which are released before the movie release always provide a big publicity to the movie. Did any of IR's recent works did that?
Therefore what I say is IR is a legend in terms of composition. But he is not Mr. Perfect and has his own misqualities and which only IR fans would tolerate. And IR's recent lack-lustre performance is a fact that each fan should be bold to accept.
