Is there any uniquness about the song "Poomalaye Thol serava" from Pagal Nilavu. I think there is not a single pause in both saranam and pallavi. Either Janaki or IR contionously sing. I am not sure about this. Any other songs like this? We know about "Mannilindha kadhal". Even though it is said SPB sang continously he admitted they edited out the tiniest of breath he took in between.

there is a very strong possibility that GA could be the lyricist since its their home production.

"Kanmaniye kaadhal enbadhu" - Aarilirundhu arubadhu varai.... one of the longest pallavi and anupallavi without a break in between.... kinda fore-runner to "Mannil indha kaadhalandri"

and probably one of toughest songs to recite as a solo singer shd be "thamthana thamthana" from Pudhiya vaarpugal... no break in the charanams

thamthana thamthana thaaLam varum FROM pudhiya vaarpugaL (MD IR) a kind of "pallavi alone" type.
minnalai pidiththu minnalai pidiththu FROM shahjahan (MD mani sharma) is also a kind of "pallavi alone" type.
if we see lyrics wise then a lot from old films will have some unique features:
parthaen rasithaen -> ends with thaen
anbu nadamaadum kalai koodamae aasai manimaegamae -> ??
In one of the episodes of Sun News interview with MSV by some school children, MSV told that he was thona thonaththifying KKD to give lyrics to his tune as the film unit has to move to malaysia or some foreign country to shoot further. KKD was not ready with the song that time. MSV was saying that "saar may maasam vandhuduchchi avanga(film unit) sonna maadhiri may maasam aarambaththilaeyae foreign pogaraanga, neenga ippa paattu kuduththaa adha naan mudichchi may maasam avanga poradhukkuLLa thandhuduvaen, he..hee..may maasam nerungunadhunnaala thaan naan nachcharikkaraen. To that KKD said "aenna da idhu vamba pochchu, may may-nnu nachcharikkarae sari indha varigaLa kaettukko 'anbu nadamaadum kalaikooda-may, aasai manimaega-may'".
andhaadhi type of songs like vasantha kaala nadhigaLilae vairamani neeralaigaL; neeralaigaL meedhinilae nenjirendin ninaivalaigaL.

Kupps... i do agree with ur categorization of "Minnalai pidithu" but i dont think "thamthana" falls under that category.. the pallavi and the charanam tunes are different in that song.

How about the moonraam pirai song
" vaanengum vanna vin meengal .....
kadal kullithu ezhum neram... naam paaduvom geethanjali" the song with the longest pallavi according to VM

Vj,
after u told i sung the song (in my mind). i feel what u r saying is right. there is a difference in pallavi and charanam of the song. so for the pudhiya vaarpugaL song ur categorization alone fits in.
Thanks.

one old movie song, lyrics by papanaasam sivan sung by Banumathy(i think) has a unique feature in the lyrics. The song side-by-side sings about both sivan and vishnu.
The song is maa ramaNan uma ramanan malaradi paNi manamae. Maa RamaNan -> Vishnu; Uma RamaNan -> Sivan. In the second line one more finer info will be there. It is maaRa janakan Kumaara janakan. maaRa janakan -> father of maaRan (thamizh word for manmadhan) -> Vishnu; kumaara janakan -> father of kumaaran(murugan) -> sivan. Really a nice lyrics.
Please allow me to digress.
There is one small kavyam in sanskrit. The author name i forgot. The kavyam's name is Raaghava yaadhaveeyam. It contains about 30-40 slokams (each slokam will be just lengthier than thirukkuraL). If we read each slokam from top to bottom (as usual) it will describe about raaghavan a.k.a raaman i.e. it is ramayanam. Whereas if u read each sloka from bottom to top (ofcourse each word should be read as usual and NOT like urdu) it is krishnayanam i.e. story of lord krishna. Really nice work.
Sorry for the digression

there is something so different about poomalaiye from pagal nilavu-unbeleivable orchestration.i can imagine the relief of orchestra once IR okayed this song.can anyone explain what is different-has IR used two different ragas as counterpoint in charanam-he will be singing in a seperate way and janaki chips in with 'ennai unakkendru koduthen...' but the total effect is amazing.

Yaaro,
the song is unique and an excellunt innovation but I dont think they use two different rags...the raga is kalyani(mostly)

The lyrics of 'Om Namas-shivaya...' from Salangai Oli are beautiful. Charanam starts with 'Panchaboothangalum muga vadivaagum...' (5), then 'Aaru thaalangalum aadaigal aagum...' (6) etc
Charanam 1 then goes to on numbers 7, 8, 9. Similarly, charanam 2 covers 3,4,2,1, and ends with 'Adhavaithamum nee, aadhiandham nee...' that's really neat.
I am quoting from memory, and on second thought lyrics could be missing some numbers, not sure. Anyway, What about original Telugu lyrics for the song? same lyrics or different?

The Telugu lyrics are exactly the same. I guess the credit goes to Veturi - the Telugu lyricist.

Kavidhai Kelungal from Punnagai Mannan is unique in its tempo and transition from "western" beginning to its Indian "folk" ending. One of IRs most interesting experiments in cross-genre fusion.

'Thathitha vithaigal' from Azagan. Does it have a long pallavi without break?

the famous janani janani song of thai moogambigai written by kavingar vaali also has this numbers in the lyrics. In the charanam it goes something like chathur(4) vaedhangaLum pancha(5) boothangaLum shan(6) maargangaLum saptha(7) theerthangaLum, ashta(8) yogangaLum nava(9) yaagangaLum. These numbers are in a kind of sankritised thamizh. However the famous ondRu irandu song of thiruvizhayaadal sung by K.B.SundaraambaL lyrics by KKD, ondRaanavan uruvil irandaanavan uruvaana painthamizhil moondraanavan, naangaanavan (meaning 4 vaedhangaLum avanae) namachivaaya aena aindhaanavan has numbers in thamizh.
dhamadhurai (starring super star) has one count song onnu rendu moonu naalu anju aaru aendha ooru sondha ooru aenna paeru :-)
