SUGAMO AAYIRAM is my pick. (PSuseela, a 70s IR film!) Why? completely perfect tune, extraordinary melody, a pallavi that delivers knockout punch despite being just one line. Best thing is the charanam - flowing and hits most notes in one heavenly sweep! The best and the sweetest charanam ever i've ever heard! any one with that one song to talk about here?

  Awe, Sugamo Aayiram it is. I heard it long ago and heard it again recently. It is something! Not heard a flowing tune like this one and u'll see why there is no other song composed as this one. Closest I remember is a Salil number in a malayalam film: Aamabari ppoonkuyile by PS. There is some similarity in the melody between the IR and SC song, both spectacular melodies. The IR song has outdone the SC tune because of the smooth flow. Must listen for every advanced music connoisseur to appreciate the beauty of this song.
  
  About putham pudhu kaalai, e thendrale no doubt great compositions but not close at all - you are missing the point i am making here.

  Archivist, you have mentioned a song which is among my favourites too. It is, as Kalai as pointed out from the film 'Thunai Iruppaal Meenakshi'- 1977. Directed by Valampuri Somanathan, it was the remake of Gemini's old tear-jerker -'Samsaram'-1951.
  T I M starred Sivakumar, Sujatha, Vijayakumar, Swarna, CK Saraswathi, Mouli, Manorama, Thangavelu, Thengai, Vijayachandrika and others.
  
  It was the year after Ilayaraja had made a trend-setting entry with 'Annakili' and tfm was already under his sway. T I M too had great songs, apart from 'Sugamo Aayiram', it had songs like ' Setril oru senkazhani'-TMS,SJ and 'Vaarthai illamal'-PS.
  
  'Sugamo Aayiram' is a classic creation. Sivakumar and Sujatha belong to the lower-middle class group, and they have 2 kids. He feels bad that they cannot afford much, and she consoles him by singing this song. Lovely lines like 'Vaazhkai endraal athil naalum ondru, andha vattathile oru thittam undu-', 'Punnagayil varum pennazhagu, oru pon nagayil illai nal uravu'--The values that add fulfillment to a householder's life are enshrined in this memorable song. 'Adhu thaane samsaram, adhil thaane sandhosham' she says.
  
  The song starts with an enchanting Veena bit and PS takes over in superb style. The interludes are puctuated with melodious Veena bits. An interesting information is that it was the famous "Veenai" Gayatri who played the Veena for this song. In fact, she has played the veena in many of Ilayaraja's early creations. (Another song where Gayatri's Veena was enthralling is 'Andhapurathil oru maharani' from Deepam).

  Saravanan, super! as always IR gave Sivakumar Sujatha a lot of super melodies. I also liked the lyrics very much for Sugama Aayiram. all interludes had veena phrases. as someone else said. Ilamai Enum poongatru is a close second. I mean there are a 1000 IR songs that re super melodious, but hearing Sugamo Aayiram it is the ONE perfect song that i was searching for and finally found it, I think.

  SugamO .... song was with many close-up shots on Sujatha (her face, her fingers playing veena etc)... she took care to ensure that the lip movements were i sync with PS'. Of course, there is no need to elaborate on PS's style. It was a great melody...
  
  But to me, the song from "EngeyO keta kural"... "Engeyo edho paaTondru kettean" Ps with SPB... Appidiye PS nammayellam izhuthu kondu pOvaar... That line "Thayaginen thalattinen... kaNNa en rajangame... nee dhaan en aadharame.." is simply superb. NTVK is a JJ's come back film. But she stopped with that only, even though she was booked for many films like Manipoor maamiyaar etc. This song was for Sarat babu and Fatafat Jayalakshmi.

  You cann't find in Internet and no link for that. I recoded this song from CD to Audio cassette it is very nice melody. Acted by Vijakanth and Viji Music by IL.

  Another song as mesmerizing as Sugamo Aayiram, but really tough tough to sing song is: Unnai Naan Paarkayil by SPB and Asha Bonsle from Kannukkoru Vannakkili. This one song is enough to confound even the worst cynics of IR's music. (those who totally stayed away because of Rahman!) but, the problem will be, those people wont have enough music knowledge to enjoy the perfection of this song. If you notice both SPB and AB can seen struggling in the song.....
