Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Thanks Saravanan. Swarnakamalam is one of Viswanath/IR greatest movies. So many emotions that one shares with the characters which are portrayed very realistically. And lovely music (some of the BGMs are magical!) to absolutely complement the movie.
And a question to the walking encyclopedias in this thread (of course, we all know who they are!!)- Did SJ and VJ sing any duet with each other in Tamil ever? If so, what movies, what songs, can I listen to them on the internet somewhere?

Machchanai Paradi - from Thangamagan
(Kaumudi, this is available on www.musicindiaonline.com) and another one for TRs Nejil Oru Ragam:
"Andha Kanangaththai Karuvattukku..."
There may be others. But these come to mind instantly.
Saravanan -
Thanks for the new instalment. Keep them coming (at a good pace!)

Saravanan/ Neel,
"Vizhiyo Urangavillai" is indeed a caressing melody and a favourite for me. "Gaslight Mangamma" ? I hear this film for first time. Is the song there in VJ site?

Kaumudi -
Correction:
The second song I mentioned above is from Ragam Thedum Pallavi (and not Nenjil Oru Ragam). This should also be available at musicindiaonline (not sure though).

Thanks, everyone.
Kaumudi- Two more duets by SJ-VJ: (My two favourite singers)
1.Indha pennodu pirandhadhu nadanam- Samayalkaaran-1974- MD-MSV. (I have written about it while covering 1974). Lovely song.
2. The best of them all is 'Penne bhoomiyadi'- Manitharil Iththanai Nirangala-1978. MD-Shyam.
A wonderful song.
I'm sorry I don't know whether they are available
on the net.
Neel- thanks for the latest additions. 'Ilaigal meedhum' shows what S-G can do if they try hard enough!

Neel D -
Thanks for the new songs. I will listen to them within the next few hours (if the site is not jammed :-))
Are you sure about the Kanangaththai song? I was always under the impression that it was VJ-SJ...but that's only an impression :-)
I listened to Sri Lanka Chinna Rani and Thilla Taangu...yenna tongue-u :-) yeththanai suththamana azhuththam, thelivu even in a frivolous and fun number. Who is the MD for Imaigal? GA? or?

C V- Please go thru my latest post. I want more information in films like 'Nee vaazha vendum' and 'Sonnadhai Seiven'. Hope you'll fill in the blanks.

Saravanan,
Sorry! I am somehow blank about all these films, except that I love the following songs:
'Andhiyil chandiran varuvathen and Ambigai neril vandhaal, anbinai alli thandhaal '.
Some trivia about 1977!:
This was the year in which emergency ended, the first non-congress Govt. arrived and there was a whiff of democracy everywhere, especially in colleges! [In fact, in our college, student union elections , which had been made a dummy (only some 25 or so class reps will elect your president!)in emergency, were reintroduced and woh! what a gala election it was!]
Coca Cola and IBM were sent out of India! Thums up and Campa/Campa Cola hit the scene! To celebrate the spirit of 77, a cold drink named 77 (Double Seven!, named by one Janata Party MP, Mr Kamath!) was introduced by Modern Bakeries! And I think it died down in 1977 itself!
Devar was unhappy with the outcome of 'aattukkaara alamElu' and said 'pOnaappOvuthu! aduththa padaththa ozhungaa eduppOm!' And all of you know, that film became '1977in iNaiyatRa vetRich chiththiram!!!!

Thanks for those two songs. SJ and VJ are my two favorite singers too.
Naaz
"I was always under the impression that it was VJ-SJ...but that's only an impression :-)" - how do you mean? Saravanan himself mentioned it is VJ and SJ singing right? I got confused a bit!!

NeelD,
when I click on "Ala asathum" link (VJ&SPB duet in Page 6) I get this error.
You don't have permission to access /Pages/vjtamilduet26/ALa_asaththum.mp3 on this server.
I can listen to the rest. Why is this so?

Naaz, Neel D, Saravanan, Kaumudi, Susi and others,
What's happening?!!! No update in the VJ thread for almost 2 days now!!!!
- From: Saravanan (@ 213.42.1.174)
on: Sat Oct 12 09:18:50 EDT 2002
Hey, ennachu? Can't believe there's been no activity in this thread for two days!
Neel- thaks for the 'Hari' song - I'm hearing it for the first time. Vani sounds naughty and deliciously irreverent when she begins with 'Jaalrava thattungadi'!! Was this song also a lift from 'Shor', considering that 'Oru paadal naan ketten' was a direct lift?
C V- From what I've read, 1977 was not a good year for the film industry as a whole. Morarji Desai was against all types of entertainment and among the first enactments of his government was clamping a 10% Ad Valorem Duty on films, which was considered a big blow to the film industry.

Saravanan,
The irony in 1977 was that Bombay (HFM) was firmly behind Janata party, thinking that an end to emergency will boost their industry!!!!
I forgot another major event of 1977! MGR became CM of TN for the first time, with his AIADMK party which was just 5 years old!

OK, here we go with a fresh update....
This is my third translation. It seems like I am providing some useful details atleast to some people. I chose to translate “Ae theeruga” from Sankarabharanam rendered by VJ and accompanied by just a one-string tambura-like instrument. This is a Bhaktha Ramadasu keerthana.
Now, many of you know what a sensation Sankarabharanam created. It catapulted K.Viswanath and SPB’s careers to some unprecedented heights. It gave the already famous KVM and VJ more boost. And of course, Somayajulu and Manjubhargavi will owe their screen life to that movie. In those days, I heard, people started to learn Carnatic music after watching this movie. Contrast this with the present day trend of movies influencing companies to put out clothes and designer dresses prefixed with movie names.
In any case, this is one simple, bhakti-filled song with simple lyrics praising Lord Rama and asking for some mercy, benevolence and protection. This song doesn’t require any instrumentation (as perfectly done in the movie) and can be sung without too much of gamakas etc which is usually the bread and butter of Carnatic music. But there is a touch of sadness with philosophical undertones in this song. The keerthana is set to Nadanamakriya ragam and adi talam.
Coming to VJ’s rendition: It is a very short and a simple song, rather too simple for VJ and I bet she would have taken ten minutes to learn and record the song in one take. As usual, very clear pronunciation of words (no gobbling up) and one can only appreciate the effort she takes, in general, while singing in a language not her own. This song, and in general such kind of songs, would have fallen flat and sounded horrible if the singer didn’t sing it with all her soul without murdering the pronunciation. And VJ as expected does full justice to the song. Surprisingly, throughout the movie, VJ’s voice suited the young kid (Tulasi) perfectly (Reminds me of VJ’s voice suiting Manjunath perfectly in Swathikiranam).
“Ae theeruga nanu daya choochedavoa
Inavamsoththama Rama
Naa tharama bhava saagarameedanu
Nalinadalekshana Rama”
O Rama, who is the best of the kings of the Suryavamsam, I don’t know how and in what way you will show mercy on me, but you have to because….
O Rama, the lotusleaf-eyed, I cannot swim through this ocean of life, full of ups and downs, all alone. Is it even possible to think of living without your help?
“Sri Raghunandana seetharamana
Srithajanaposhaka Rama
Karunyaalaya bhakthavaradha ninnu
Kannadi kaanupu Rama”
O son of the Raghuvamsam, the consort of Seetha, the one who feeds the depended, the temple of mercy and the one who gives boons to one’s bhakthas (disciples/followers), you were also born a and to a human (meaning: so you understand our problems!!)
“Kroora karmamulu neraka chesithi
Neramulenchaku Rama
Daridryamu pariharamu saeyavae
Daivasikhaamani Rama”
I have committed so many sins and wrong-doings which were absolutely uncalled for and undesired. Hey Rama, who is the diamond in the league of gods (meaning: the best and brightest among gods), please help me atoning for all the sins I have committed in my life.
And a last stanza which was not used in the movie but present in the actual keerthana as we know it today -
“Vasavanuta ramadasa poshaka
Vandanamayodhya Rama
Dasarchita maakabhayamosangavae
Dasarathi Raghurama”
Salutation to you, O Rama, who is the one praised by Ramadasu (the poet). Rama, who is the god in Ramadasu’s life and the son of King Dasaratha, please give us “Abhayam” (protection from evil) to lead a peaceful life.
Hope you guys will enjoy this translation.

Kaumudi, that was just great! I knew that the song, which Tulasi walks on the street and sings, had to be Bhakthi song, but never gave a second thought to the lyrics. You have brought to light the beauty of the devotion-filled lyrics. Thank You.
