I missed the post where you had confirmed!
Che! Oru Vaippu kodunga Anne!
Regarding Manorama s "theriyadho nookku"- another great song.Even the choreography and dancing by Manorama and A Sakunthala was good.I heard the Malayalam version of this song by P.Leela once in "Mathurgeetham"-vividh bharathi. That too sounded great. Can someone come out with details of this malayalam song.
Punnahai
that was a song from "Sorgam"-PS singing for KRV."Nilavu vanthu paadumo".

OISG:
nilavu vandhu paadumO is from rAman eththanai rAmanadi. A great song sung wonderfully well by PS. I can easily understand why you confused it with 'oru muththAraththil muppadhu muththukkaL sErththu vaiththirundhEn' of sorgam. The song situtations have some similarity and both involve KRV.

Thiru, abt the digress, I ASSUMED from your/saravanan's post that Nukkad followed YJHZ on the SAME slot, thats why I felt YJHZ was Monday.
Am not very clear abt YJHZ as I didnt watch it, but Nukkad was definitely on Monday. Interestingly Javed Miandad's six was on 18/4/86 and the final episode of Nukkad few weeks later followed that!

How about a thread for Teleserials though it is not in line with TFM?The discussions are good and bring back memories of the good old days.
Prabhu
Nukkad was on Mondays and YJHZ was on Fridays initially with the Swarup Sampath,Inamdar episodes.

- A great song by Salil Choudhry. Directed by Balu Mahendra. Sung by Jayachandran and S.P.Shailaja(?). The picturization of this song is great, and will rank among the best ever in tamil films. Is this the first song that was in the background?
Shoba and Pratap looked good in this song.
- Shankar writes on this song:
The song's picturised in a village called nangavaram near trichy. The song goes in the BG while pratap and shoba chat while having a stroll in the fields, river banks etc.
The opening scene of the movie is worth mentioning in this context. It starts with dawn (rays emerging from the horizon) and by the time the title ends the sun 'd be fully visible, the camera being in the same position.
A nice piece to appreciate Balumahendra.

bb,
Great song in sivaranjani.Picturised in the villages of Kadiyakurichi
Bangalapudur & Nanagavaram in and around my native village. So this song is actually SSOTD for me.
Both the songs (Naan and Poovannam) will always haunt us and stay closer to our heart like our first love (which invariably would have been a failure!).

Summer of '42 (1971)
Starring: Jennifer O'Neill, Gary Grimes
Director: Robert Mulligan
Synopsis: Nostalgic coming-of-age drama concerns relationship between teenage boy and a somewhat older war bride. Evocative of time period, with beautiful cinematography and score. For those seeking lyrical, sentimental dramatic fare.
Above is the synopsis of Summer of 42 :))
Change the title with azhiyAtha kOlangaL.Instead of older war bride change it to Teacher :))
If u have missed this movie.. please watch it.Worthful. Kamal,Vijayan & third one ? just come in the opening scene or is it their voice? i forget it.. The film starts from there when they think of their teen-age..
I remember watching this movie in DD a day before 88 or 89 Deepavali.

Another sad tidbit...
The fat guy who acts in "nenjathai killAthE" (works Ve.Murthi's Autoworkshop) acts in this movie too as the 4th? friend . He dies in the movie after getting drowned.
I heard, in real life too he died shortly :(

Azhiyadha kolangal was infact a good movie.. Our own version of 'summer of 42'.. The fat guy who comes in this movie is the guy who comes as Suresh's friend in paneer pushpangal I guess...
I didnt realise that the song was by salil choudary... I thought it was IR (by default)...:)

A great song, it's a tribute to the genius of Salil Choudhury that he can produce such a gem in tamil. Naturally I too thought it must be KVM/MSV.
p: must be 88, as diwali(Nov 7) fell on a monday.

i think the movie's story was based on three (not four)friends in a village. two thin guys (one of them tall) and one fat guy. maybe they were in the high school and the scenes are all when they are not in school, hanging around. they have fun following the local postmaster's love affair, sitting on the railway crossing gate and counting the bogies in a train, having fun in the river (the fat guy doesn't know swimming). one of the lean guy's (natarajan?) cousin (chubby pretty girl) comes for a short stay and this guy is occupied at home which draws the evergreen kindal from the other two. his assistance to her in the maavaattum scene is memorable. and then comes the new teacher, a stunningly beautiful shobha. its more of an admiration towards her especially for one guy who takes it a little more of it to his heart. the way he lets his emotion comes out and controlling it too when he is near to shobha (she on the ladder) is a real heartbreaker. the way the attitude and looks change when pratap pothen comes to see his lady love is another interesting phase. the way they imitate him, trying to smoke like him its all treat to watch. the drowning scene of the fat boy brings the story to an end. only then you realize that you have lived with these three guys and with their emotions all thro the 14 reels. kudos to balumahendra for making this beauty of a movie. its indeed an azhiyaatha kolam in my heart. and this SOTD rang too many bells and couldn't stop going into the flashback.

Song of the Day: thi-naa moo-naa kaa-naa from paNam.

- Sung by NSK, this song is a subtle (may be not so subtle) way of promoting DMK. This is the first film of MSV/TKR.
- Manisegaran writes on this song:
In discussing the song Kooja Kooja Koojaa we have to go back to a film produced in 1952-Panam where MSV and TKR combined for the first time. In that film produced by NS Krishnan there is a song promoting DMK. The song goes “Theenaa Moona Kaana” In those days the censor board did not allow, among other things political propaganda in movies. Following the resounding success of Velaikkari and Ore Iravu, C.N. Annadurai publicly gave a statement that should censorship be removed completely, within a few movies and a short span of time DMK would capture the state legislature in Tamilnadu. It was at this difficult period of time that NSK sang Theena Moona Kaana and in the next line mentioned Thirukkural Munnani Kazhagam. There was nothing the censorship could do about this though the purpose was tactfully and cunningly achived. Now APN and a few of his close friends at this time saw the DMK party growing like wildfire and so decided to suppress it. They were members of the Thamizharaus Kazhagam. Ma PO Si and Avai Shamnugam were strong supporters of this. Being a film penned by APN and produced by Venu, APN took the freedom to counter the Theena Moona Kaana song. A song was written in Mangalyam and the song was “Vaanaa moonaa Kaana,” sung by TMS and Chellamuthu. This was a reference to the comedy actor Ezhumalai who was named Va.Mu. Kazhugumaalai. This was a competition song between Ezhumalai and A. Karunanithi (Again Karunanithi!) The Tamilnadu got the message. Such competitions were needed in those days to make the films run.
- Saravanan writes on this song:
Of course, I have heard the song ‘Theena Moona Kaana’ and the impertinent way in which Kalaivanar got through the watchful censors of those days, by calling it Thirukkural Munnani Kazhagam! Brilliant lyrics by Kannadasan- he himself was a DMK man those days.I remember the line ‘Pagitharivodu naatinar vaazha Thirukkural thandhaar Periyaar’, and before we recover from our shock, NSK saucily adds ‘ Thiruvalluvar periyaar’! Again tongue-in-cheek cheeky references to ‘Karuppu- Sigappu’ and ‘Thambimaarukku oru Anna’! Only NSK could carry this off!
Panam- 1952 was a special film in many ways. It was the second film of Sivaji to be released. It was produced by NSK himself under the banner ‘Madras Pictures’. (It flopped and landed NSK in debt). More important, it was the first full-fledged film of the MSV-TKR duo. It was NSK who suggested that Viswanathan’s name come first and TKR’s name last. The songs were many- memorable among them : ‘Ezhayin Kovil’- MLV-GKV(I have spoken about this song often. Maybe you can feature this song in SOTD soon- I have given it to AruLaracan), Manamudayaare manithargal-CSJ, Kudumbathin vilakku-MLV, Panam irundhaale-TV Rathinam, Engey theduven-NSK.
Speaking of ‘Theena Moona Kaana’- have you heard the reply from Ma Po Si’s Thamizharasu Kazhagam? AP Nagarajan was closely associated with this, and in his ‘Mangalyam’-1954, there was a song ‘Vaanaa Moonaa Kaanaa’ for a comedy character called Va Mu Kazhugumalai! This song was sung by TMS. I remember hearing it long back on Radio Ceylon.

Yesterday was a holiday for us on account of Islamic new year.At about 16.00 Bahrain time( 18.30 IST) I saw this programme in SUN TV.Anchored by Shahul the person interviewd was one Mr.AliKhan.
He says that he has an impressive collection of 90% of TFM songs since 1931.Mr.Khan has them now in CDs.The point is he asked a question "I do not know where to go from here? I want to take them to the next generation".I immediately thought about newtfmpage.
I am not sure how this may work out but this is just the start of an idea. Can someone contact Mr.Khan and show him how this page works.Showcase post s by Manisegaran ,Saravanan,Sriram Lakshmanan etc to impress upon the like mindedness, interest, authenticity etc.
Another favourable point is that the man has stayed away from commercial use and has been helping research scholars in their PH.D programmes(Marudakasi songs for eg)
With such a gold mine available i request fellow Dfers at Chennai to get into act and move forward.
