We have come a long way in terms of talents. Today, TFM leads while other languages follow (copies).
But the personalities of our talents leave much to be desired.
We still see faces without make up at award ceremonies, slippers, unkempt hair, untucked shirts, t-shirts - in short total unprofessionalism.
This carelessness for appearance is also carried when travelling to foreign lands.
The late Sivaji Ganesan was an exception to this. He always travelled in style, had his clothings pressed and had good taste generally. He never stayed in 3 star hotels and always stayed in the best suites. We always can feel proud of him, especially when among non-Tamils.
I firmly believe that a celebrity should behave like one, not so much as to inflate their own egos, but to have a good standing among ordinary people.
Why is it that our people with so much talents, pay so little attention to personal grooming and appearance?

BTW, let us forget the older generation and focus on the new generation such as AR Rahman, Harish Jayaraj, Yuvan S Raja, Hariharan, Bharadwaj (not bad), Anuratha Sriram (also not bad), etc.

ARR is humility personified.
It's us fans, who go around blowing HIS trumpet!

It is not like that magix. I am talking about grooming and taking care of their appearance.
Just look at our Hindi counterparts. :(

Gowri did u see the pictures of YSR at the Popcorn audio release? Take a look before posting threads like this!

If what you say is true, then we must congratulate YSR. But that one incident alone is not enough. All our stars must appear like STARS.
Why are they not bothered? That's my question.

Ah Gowri, finally something that sees the lighter side!
I don't believe dressing/grooming is all that goes into the 'celebrity' look. Doesn't Rajinikanth, for all his carelessness about dressing, have a more powerful personality than many of the designer-dressed?
Speaking about the music industry, I prefer the casual, minimalist style of ARR to the loud, crass, bejewelled 'celebrity' style of Anu Malik and the ilk.
Contrast Bappi Lahiri with our own Shankar (Ganesh), Anu Malik with Adityan, and you will know that bad taste has nothing to do with geography!
Give me a simple S Janaki or P Susheela anyday to the decked-up-for-the-wedding LREswari or Swarnalatha. Usha Uthup is a study in contrast - even though she's almost always decked up, she carries herself with some style and elan.
Anuradha Sriram? She's among the worst dressed, her attire for stage shows give you the shivers much like our Mano, or for that matter, any of their contemporaries in the North - Udit, Sonu, Alka, Asha (did someone say that you mature with age?)...
For a ringside view of the spectrum from the outlandish to the 'hip', don't look beyond the gulf in style between AV Ramanan (Sapthaswarangal) and YSR (best groomed of the lot?).
I think ARR and IR have a rather 'cool' look about them, despite the contrast in their attires, that showcases a supreme self-confidence and a certain calmness brought about by success. I think ARR's travels have made him a cool and casual dresser much like Maniratnam. Understated, but not an eyesore.
Good dressers in TFM - ARR, YSR, Srinivas, Shankar Mahadevan, rarely Hariharan, Harish,..
If you had a best dressed (and groomed) male and female artist in TFMworld, YSR and Mathangi (new singer) would have no competition.
Worst dressed? Mano, Anuradha Sriram, Subha, Swarnalatha, Harini, Unnikrishnan,...
I get your point anyway; with the exception of a select few, the southerners have a marked disdain for 'branding' and 'marketing' themselves as commodities in the commercial world. It's a typical southie mindset that is best exemplified when you see the typical filmfare-type of ceremonies where pygmies of the north(in performance and success) swagger like titans in their designer gear while the likes of MT Vasudevan Nair will hardly invite a second glance from the uninitiated.
Things are changing though, an ARR with his (SONY-mandated?)flowing locks is a perfect sign of how the winds of change are wafting past the vindhyas. A sign of confidence singularly brought about with the advent of Maniratnam, ARR, Ram Gopal Verma, etc. onto the national centrestage.

Firstly, I'll be cautious about equating personality with presentation and appearances.
Some celebrities with extraordinary personalities (someone mentioned Rajini) can get away with shabby appearances. However, I think for the rest, especially the younger generation, care shud be taken about how they appear in public.
Without even having to go as far as being togged out from head to toe in designer labels or looking like they've jus walked out of a beauty parlour, the least they can do is try not to look like they jus got out of bed with a bad hangover.

Suresh,I agree that YSR is the best dressed and groomed in TFM but Mathangi? Please! Easily the best dressed and groomed female in TFM has to be Anuradha Sriram! Maybe she has let herself go after having the baby but she looked good before and can easily look that good again.

BTW I don't know whether the way somebody dresses reflects their personality! All TFM artists have their own personality and their dressing doesn't affect that. This is a pretty dumb thread but I thought I'd chuck my 2 cents worth in!I really couldn't care less how there people dress, after all it is not very often that we see them as they are behind the camera!
This just proves how bored I am! LOL

But it's a completely diff matter for PrabhuDeva!
In the films he wears clothes that sometimes beat Govinda, and sometimes makes him look nice.
But once he's not acting, he wears such down to earth (literally) clothes, u wont realise there's an actor amidst u if he stands in a crowd.
And let's take our'comedian' Vijay Kanth..
He (chuckle) wears tight fitting clothes .. :-))))))))))

I think some of you got the wrong picture here. I don't mean dressing up! There is such a thing as tasteful dressing. It does not have to be designer clothes. Whatever one wears, it is important that they look good and professional.
Sorry to say this, but I sincerely believe that Rajani shoudl not appear in public unshaven and worse still, with graying beard. :)
When attending functions, it will be good if they are conscious of how they look, especially in these days of tv and video.

Wow! A thread and that too started by Gowri, without the usual ARR-IR adi thadi! How did I miss it?
I too wish that our stars at least dress like stars. But yaaru punaikku mani katturathu?
And one more thing, I hate to see our singers standing like a statue when delivering songs on stage. I know that they are pinnani singers, but when they come to munnani, can't they movie a teensy weensy little bit?
Hariharan and Anuradha are great movers and shakers. Not to forget Shuba. :)

Guys this is a completely pointless thread.True the musician should dress well but that should come from within themselves. If they feel comfortable dressing down then that is fine, after all they aren't really doing in front of the screens that much. I see that YSR has been voted best groomed TFM personality, which I can agree with, but this is based on Yuvan's performance at the Popcorn Audio release.Who knows what he dresses like when he is not on stage? True that he does make an effort when on stage but who doesn't?This is the same with other personalities,Every body makes an effort when they go on stage but their professions don't depend on what they look like.If it mattered, they would be actors!
It is a well known fact that down south, there is less importance placed on grooming and looks than up north. This is probably due to the fact that Bollywood competes with Hollywood, and Kollywood tries to copy Bollywood, but fails dismally!( I mainly mean this in respect to the Actors and actresses in the TF industry.!)

Hari and anushriram look like jokers when they 'try' dancing....Hari looks really vague with his ponytail (if it were kavuNdamaNi he wud've said -"ennada un maNdaila keeripuLLa paduthirukku") and the french beard....yikes.

Revathy
Therein lies the problem. Not many people make any effort to look presentable when they go on stage.
ROTFL
You have a point on singers too. Although SP Bala is fat, he presents himself well. When these artistes are seen enjoying themselves when they are performing, it makes the audience feel even better.

ROTFL, I agree wit u. It is good to see the singers moving and shaking. Speaking of which, I recall those IR concerts in Spore where SPB, Gangai Amaran will get cheeky and do funny things on stage while Chitra will shut her ears wit her hands, frown in concentration and sing beautifully while standing like a robot. It was pretty amusing to watch those duets. The other bad habit the singers seem to have is talking during the interludes. It's like presentation and stage ettiquette have no meaning to these artistes. Eventhough they are playback singers, if they choose to entertain on stage or attend a public function, they shud present themselves as well as behave in an appropriate manner.
