I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

All- Thanks a lot for your patience in putting up with my erratic appearances. I know it is insupportable, and I am sorry. Trust 'Ponne bhoomiyadi' was worth the wait :)
Neel, I listented to the Malaya Marutha song. Wonderful!

Saravanan,
I just came by to post something and saw your chronology. Haven't read it yet. But wanted to thank you. Now I will go read it.

There is something nice about waiting and anticipation, especially when you know that at the end it is going to be good, no great. And that is exactly how I felt when I read this latest write-up - great.
I have been waiting for so long, patiently, for this particular instalment for it was going to have the much awaited details about Ponnae boomiyadi. I can't express my gratitude enough merely with these words for also putting up the song as an mp3. And you can imagine how I would have felt when I heard, for the first time ever, a song featuring my favorite singers on the same platform!
Thank you, thank you and one more thank you!

So, I flinch at the word "nostalgia." From my own private window to the world, I see it, the word that is, as both crippling and ugly. It has all the evocation of a dried rose - and what lingers is a residual whiff of loss. A dead rose by any other name? Maybe. (Or is that Pot Pourri?)
I mean, listen to it carefully - "nostalgia..." Doesn't it sound like a clinical condition, a disease? Like Anorexia Nervosa, or Spina Bifida?
(Would a rose is a rose is a rose work well with that?) Maybe.
Memory is such a strange bag indeed. On reading your write-up, Saravanan, and listening to the link you've provided, I had the opportunity to dip into that river of do-return. What took me more by surprise, was the commonality of our experiences - the songs in the background or in the fore. Listening to Ponnae Bhoomiyadi I didn't look back with teary-eyed regret, nor did I throw open the windows to let the past flood in. I didn't even ponder circa circumstances, that's all too much of a blur (with unbelieveable overlap) to fulfill any purpose. The tremor was different on my side of the audition.
The composition, the singing, the precision and perfection of the song. That's what came alive again. An opening of a thousand evocative windows, petals that never died.
Nostalgia sound funereal to describe a feeling of rebirth.
I'll stay with the song for its perfection and excellence. I'll stay with any song for those reasons - even when my hearing fails.
But, Nostalgia?
Ah, sari sari sari sari :-)
(The writing behind the songs hit all the bravo points. Thank you sincerely for making the time and effort, Saravanan.)

Kaumudi, Neel, Naaz: You're welcome. Thank you for your kind words.
Naaz, Yes, Ponne bhoomiyadi is a lovely song, as I have described it. And nostalgia is one of the reasons, among others, that I love it. For me personally, nostalgia has never been an ugly word! And I don't look back with 'teary eyed regret' or anything like that--I am just flooded with happy memories--that's all.
Never mind--as you say, we all love the song--let us simply enjoy it :)

Since I know what you do for a living,I am able to understand the doubts of Da vinci.Sridevi s birthday?39 August 13th must have passed since but whenever one thinks of "Sixteen"its always Sri !
A superb song this one is.I managed to see in the week after Diwali,Sigappu Rogakkal,Thappu Thalangal,Aval Appadithan and Thai meethu Sathiyam (as all my unholy alliances those days were members of Rasigar mandrams). Also i thought that it was a telugu dubbing seeing the stone-faced Murali Mohan in the posters.Since this one sank without a trace all i had seen is some bits in TV and this song.Imaginatively composed and gracefully sung by both. But about the lyrics?Apart from the Pallavi s 2 lines i am not impressed.Oud arrangements and humming superbly done.Thorughly enjoyable song. Some phrases remind you of shyams Panjakalyani song and arrangements Salils.

Saravanan,
Thanks for a good posting of Shyam. I also knew only today that he composed the song "mazai tharumO...". He seems to me a Music Director of the kind:
"Full many a flower is born to blush unseen"
And your nostalgic memories are something that all of us belonging to that age group went through. I regret that such a beautiful time is not possible for my kids for two reasons : 1. the pressure of modern life, and 2. the choices that have been thrust on us.
The song ‘ponnE…’ has shades of Salil Choudhury’s style, with its 7 beat rhythm and usage of instruments. Has someone felt the same?

OISG,
I didnt read your posting before I made mine. I am glad to know that you have also felt the shades of Salil's style in Shyam's music.

Saravanan,
Thanks for the writeup and the two songs. Excuse my ignorance, but where is Shyam now?
All,
There are some decisions that are inevitable. I know it is disappointing. It is to me too. Hope you understand.

Chances are the other afficianados of 70s/80s TFM are in touch with you outside this thread, and convey their kudos to you for your efforts in private. This is just speculation on my part (and I hope I am right.)
Still, the slow trickle of responses/rejoinders to your reviews/write-ups (mostly from the usual suspects) on VJs songs makes me wonder if there is something else at work here... (how conspiratorial...:-))
I am convinced, more and more, that it is not your work and regard for VJ songs that is the problem.
What remains? (you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure that one out.)
I am sure you can see the truth at the heart of this silence.
(But please don't stop your good work. That would be the unkindest cut of all!)

Da Vinci, how right you are about Shyam!
Neel- When last heard, Shyam is living in Chennai, and is an important officebearer in the Music Directors Association. I think he composes for devotional and other non-film albums.
Naaz- Thanks :) Writing of these songs gives me immense pleasure, and that is ample reward in itself. And the generous words of praise from friends like you encourage me a lot.
And as for VJ- surely she is above any further words of praise (or lack of it, for that matter)
Her works will remain even when you and me and she herself are no longer here, and they will stand testimony of her greatness.

Naaz, Saravanan,
I am proud to be one of the usual suspects in this thread, which sets an example of how dignified a chat of this nature should be/can be, with a little give and take on either side!
Unfortunately, this time, after a long wait for this episode, I had films /songs on which I had absolutely no value addition!

There is one excellent VJ's song in Thudikkum Nenjam, Music by IL.
could anyone recall it.

Susi, have those songs on tapes, will try for mp3 conversion soon.
Siva, there were 2 VJ songs in Thudikkum Nenjam (a dubbed film from Telugu?)- A breezy SPB-VJ duet (Irandu kiligal inaindhu nanaindhu) and a soulful VJ solo ( Ethetho kanavu kandeno manampol)- and the latter was in the same tune as SJ's classic Kanna Vaa from Maragadha Veenai.
