TFM really took a turn with the arrival of this duo to the field. While TFM has been in existence before Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy, it is after their debut that TFM really kicked off.
Songs pre-VR suffered an early death even by the 60s, whereas VR songs are most popular even today, some 40 years later.
Added to their success story is the fact that nearly ALL their songs became popular and still remain so. This is no mean achievement with no other MD having ever reached their success rate.
Let us use this thread to recollect, remininse and celebrate this great duo and their contributions to TFM.
Hope to get interesting quips from knowledgeable people like Manisegaran, Sathya Keerthi, Saravanan, Uthaya, OISG etc etc.

CP, let us limit to the V-R duo only.
It is a pity that this topic did not generate much interest among the readers of this forum. V-R form an important aspect of TFM history and they must be given thier rightful place.
Some interesting snippets:
In the movie Jeans, the two chracters acted by Prashanth are named Viswanathan and Ramamoorthy.
In the movie Poovellaam Kettuppaar, the story of two music directors were featured. Interestingly, the charcters bore a lot of resemblances to V-R!
And finally, Rama Narayanan directed a movie called Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy acted by Ramki, Vivek and Roja. Unfortunately it was a mockery of the great duo with MD SA Rajkumar lifting Vairathil mazhai ketten from Kudiyiruntha Koyil's Aadaludan paadalai.

SV Shekhar: oho!Entha Kuzhanthaigalin peyar enna?
Vivek : Viswanathan- Ramamoorthy
SVS : Adappavai!Appadiyuma Tune kidaikale!

In Jeans Rehman paid tributes to VR.The song "Anbe Anbe" has been deliberately composed like a VR song-with a humming ala "Naan aanyittal" and the rhythm in foxtrot which was popularised by VR in Kalangalil Aval Vasantham Azahgukkum malarukkum,Naalaam naalam, aval oru navarasa(MSV)etc.
I would prefer to get info on some on their less-heard jems like
1.Kunguma pottu kulungudhudhadi
2.Deviyar iruvar
etc.
VR brought the semi-classical and THE CORRECT approach to FILM MUSIC.This was path breaking as the stalwarts GR,SMS,SVV,KVM were more in the classical mould. This brought the usage of more Hindustani ragas like Desh ,Tilang,Sumanesaranjani(prathi madyama of Suddha Dhanyasi),Madhu Kauns.
There was this good thread "Creativity of MSV" with lot of inputs from Sriram L.
The success of the duo was in their approach-FRONT-END first. You will always have Sivaji song or an MGR song but rarely a VR song. This is perfect understanding of their job which was to make-believe Sivaji-MGR singing on screen.
I like to narrate this evertime when i talk of MSV.My cousin and me were just of the movie"Day of the Jackal".Following was the conversation:
1.Me :Che!Evvalavu kashtappattu avan plan panraan.Aana Kadaisila avan yaru, avan efforts & meticulous planning ennanu theriyama poiduthey.
2.My cousin:That was the reason why he was picked up for the job and it is a success to his professionalism. His job was to maintain the anonymity which he accomplished.

Reason for split (a rumour): Heard that MSV became very close to LRE which was critisized by TKR and one day TKR went off snapping the tie. No ego clash.
TKR's thani aavarthanam: soapu-seeppu-kaNNaadi
But TKR was not successful in his thani aavarthanam, whereas MSV was.
Latest version of VR: aengirundhO vandhaan (released in late 90s?). Acted by sathyaraaj, roja, janakaraaj. It is a remake of chiththram(malayaaLam super-hit film).

>>Enakku kelvi kettkkathaan theriyum. :)<<
Ithai naan engo kaeta mathiri irukke, uha, it's nagesh's dialogue from thiruvizhaiyadal.
Shamrma;
I thought Karnan was by KVM, have heard "Engiruntho vandhaan" by MSV+Ramamoorthy, it is mid 90's film, starring Sathyraj+Roja, super songs!
As Karnan was classical, I think it is by KVM, not MSV+RM, as KVM was the best MD for carnatic based songs!
who scored for "Kanthan kauranai", it was KVM, wasn't it ?

2) Thiruvarutchelvar -???

Thiruvizhaiyadal? :)
I am not sure about V-R scoring for devotional movies as I think the Golden age for such movies was after they parted ways.
But I also know that classical songs were a piece of cake for MSV. Take movies like Aboorva Raagangal, Thavaputhalvan, Antha 7 Naatkkal, Mirudhanga Chakravarthi for instance.
But as Mellisai Mannan, his speciality was mellisai of course.

Thiruvizhaiyadal is by KVM.....
Thiruvarutchelvar - something unique about this movie - was it TMS who acted on this or was the music by TMS ?

Sivaji was Thiruvarutchelvar. (Beautiful song - Kaathalaagi kasinthu)
TMS acted in and as Arunagirinathar. Horrible. :)

"It is Thiruvilaiyaadal - no zh! :) "
Aalavandhan it is "ThiruviLaiyaadal" neengaLum kavundhuteengaLae :-))
sabesan "muththaithiru" is from arunagirinaadhar. It is indeed arunagirinaadhar's poem on lord Murugan. TMS did a splendid job in singing that song.

Kupps,
The split between MSV and TKR has been explained several times. LRE was not the reason at all.
From the time MSV and TKR combined in the film Panam, it was actually MSV who did most of the composing work. TKR was violin genius who enriched the BGM. When you listen to the songs of MSV-TKR you could faintly hear the violin sound accompanying the song tune. This enriched the quality of the music very much. But effective the split this was totally absent in the songs by MSV, though retained sometimes in the songs by TKR.
The last film they worked together was Padmini Pictures Aayirathil Oruvan. This film saw both some rare union and split as well. BR Bantulu who was in Sivaji Unit abandoned him and came to MGR after bitter experience with SIvaji in MUradan Muthu. Jayalalitha was paired with MGR in Aayirathil Oruvan. Kannadasan and MGR who were not in talkig terms got united in this movie when Vaali could not pen lyrics to suit the taste and quality of MGR- ODUM MEGANGALE ORU SOL KELIRO was the bond that united Kannadasan with MGR.
Reason for the split. TKR succumbed to heavy alcoholic influence and could not perform well in the studios. The bitterness was silently fermenting. By the time Aayirathil Oruvan was produced Kannadasan saw the genius in MSV and told him to be independent. True enough MSV kicked off with the film Nee and became highly successful, giving some Silver Jubilee and 100 day run films.
TKR started off with Saathu Mirandaal and composed for some 44 movies, but was of no parallel to MSV .
Thanks,
Mani
