Movie: Aboorva Sagodharargal (1949)
This Gemini movie has three MDs listed - Rajeswara Rao, Vaidyanathan and Parthasarathi. Does anybody know who actually composed the songs "Maanum Madhiyum Aadum Solai" and "Laddu Laddu Mittaai Venuma?" Who are the lyricists? Two are mentioned in the title - Kotthamangalam Subbu and somebody else.
For those who hvnt heard it, Maanum Madhiyum is a great treat! Laddu Laddu is excellent, too. The movie is surprisingly good - goes without sagging anywhere. The dances and songs are excellent. The dialogs look slightly quaint...
For trivia buffs, this movie was remade as Gora Aur Kala in Hindi with Hemamalini, Rekha and Rajendra Kumar. Remade in Tamil again as Neerum Neruppum with MGR.

Aboorva Sagodharargal (1949) (also simultaneously made in Telugu under the title: apoorva sahOdarulu - 1950) is based on Dumas' novel "3 Cosrican Brothers". Sorry, I can't comment on the lyricicsts for the Tamil version. I only hold the (old) film songs book for the Telugu version.
As far as the MDs are concerned, please remember that its a Gemini Production and Saluri Rajeswara Rao, along with MD Parthasarathy, Emani Sankara sastry (famous vaiNika) was "on contract" with Gemini from 1942 to 1950. Generally its widely accepted that Saluri was the composer and MD Parthasarathy, a trained Carnatic musician, looked after music arrangement. We exactly don't know whether MDP himself composed any song. Its 'possible'. But, we 'd never know, unless someone from those times opens his/her mouth and speaks the 'truth'. Saluri and Emani are no more, to answer! In film titles both (/all 3) were given credit as MDs.
Aside: I can't think of any film under MDP's MDship.
Regards,
Sreenivas

Movie: Illara Jothi (1954)
This has a song similar to "Thunbam Nergaiyil Yaazhedutthu Nee Inbam Serkka Mattaaya?" The song begins "Unakkum Enakkum" - I cant quite recall the words. Does anyone know the MD of this movie?

Aargh! Can you believe it, the song was not in the video I saw. So did "Ye Wadha Karo Chand Ke Samne" become "Ullangal Ondragi Thullum Bodhile" or the other way around? If I remember right, Raj Hath, the Hindi movie came in 1956. Music by Shankar Jai Kishan.

In the latest issue of Cinema Express, vAmanan has written an article on
Balamurali Krishna's contribution to TFM. The following link only has the
first half of the article:
http://www.cinemaexpress.com/singers/singers.asp
In the missing second half, vAmanan talks in length about the
`thiruviLaiyAdal' song, oru nAL pOdhumA. He says that KVM, Pugazhendhi
and APN wanted Seerkazhi G to sing this song. But SG refused saying that
the song comes as a 'losing song' in the movie. Then they discussed again
and thought of BMK. BMK was told beforehand that it was a 'losing song'.
But he said 'No problem; I'll sing it.' (Good for us that this happened
in the right way. BMK did a fantastic job!)
Pugazhendhi says the following about the song..
mudhal pAdhi pAdalai varigaLukku ERpa mettamaiththOm.. kuRippitta rAgam endru

and then continued saying this with a smile..

Sreenivas: Your best bet is to get a copy of the movie (PAL) from Columbia Films and convert it. A couple of the songs are available in assorted Bhanumathi & Ghantasala collections.
Vamanan's expanded essays from Cinema Express have been published this year as 'thirai isai alaigal.' Runs from MKT to Kunnakudi - hopefully his current series will be published as a 2nd vol. While I could not find Randor Guy's 2 books, his essays appear occasionally in The Hindu. There was one on Modern Theatres' TR Sundaram around Pongal.
Other interesting books I picked up were: 'Makkal virumbi partha thamizh thiraippadangaL' vol 1 & 2,
cinema thuraiyil ilakkiya vaathigal & vairamuthu varai. The Mohenjadaro book someone mentioned was available, but I didn't buy it since it didn't look interesting.
All were available at the Madras Book Fair and also at New Booklands (opp. ARR Complex in T Nagar).

Thank you Kishore! In late Decemeber (24th) you kindly provided me the following URLs, and commented on their services.
1. www.angelfire.com/biz/columbiafims
2. www.gcol.com/jaihind/
3. desivideos.hypermart.net/
However 1 and 3 are defunct :-(. I could find most of MKT's films and also "Chandralekha" in Jaihind's alphabetical listing, but not kaNNagi and lailaamajnu. Perhaps I should write to Jaihind people. Certainly a direct contact with Columbia Films 'd be better. A web search wasn't much helpful.
Randor Guy wrote every Friday between late Nov and
January; mostly on Hollywood personalities. The one on TRSundaram was an exception. I don't know whether he stopped writing, or the on-line ed. doesn't publish anymore.
I am pleased to know that S. Krishnaswamy's book is still available in the market.

It has been a long time since I posted in this page. When you talked about "oru nAL pOdhumA", I couldn't resist since it is one of my favroite pieces. BMK didn't a terrific job. I want to write a few lines about Kannadasan's magic in this song. Do you have the song and can you give me a URL to it? I would like to comment on it. I know the lyrics but would like to listen to it once since I haven't heard it in a long time.

'the winning song' of thiruviLaiyAdal.)

song.

Sreenivas: The Columbia Films site is working - I just checked their March VCD releases. Not sure if the typos in 1 are causing you problems - ..films/ the l and the / are missing. They had acquired the negatives of Laila Majnu last year and were ready to send out video copies by Oct/Nov 99.

At the www.intamm.com site, check out Music World - the Jan & Feb issues for a 2-part interview with MSV. There's also an interview with Jamunarani in Feb.
For Bhoori/Bhasker (I know it's one of you - just not sure which:-): Nobody had a copy of the Subadinam soundtrack. One enterprising cassette shop guy offered seerkazhi's title song.
No one even had a copy of the video (perhaps Columbia Films has one?) The Raj Video Vision manager told me that I'd have a tough time finding old videos (and he was right!) because the rise in TV channels has eaten into the audience for videos in general, and those who want to can watch old movies via cable.
He claimed that most of the movies were available in a different format which they use for broadcasting on cable and it's not cost-effective to make VHS copies available. The print quality for a less rare movie like thillaana mohanaambaaL broadcast on cable was stunningly good even compared to Columbia Films' VCD. Oh, well! If anyone has contacts with the TV channels in Chennai let me know:-)
