Long time ago, ARR once in an interview said that he would love to do music for a full length carnatic classical movie like shankarabaranam. If given a chance, do you guys think that ARR can do it? I mean, can he do classical, semi-classical songs with our traditional south indian instruments without cheating our ears by using the synthesizers, samplers and drum bads?

Step #1: Sounds
synths/drum pads and samplers helps ARR to invent non-existent instruments which will add to his sonic library and be unique in their quality.
If he has to work on making carnatic music, this step will be redundant...No need for ARR to put long hours in sound and effect design. He will be able to choose the instruments directly as they are known and existing in the real world.
Step #2: Depends on how good is his 10 years of experience?
A film composer ( don't misunderstand these with Immortal Composers like Holy Trinity or their descendants ), they should be able to deliver any style of music. Hence by this definition, ARR was successful in creating(mimicing) various styles of music. In what way carnatic music (by film standards) shall be different for him in creating it like other styles of music (like jazz, dappangathu, pop, rock) which he was doing so far. He may put some long hours if it's different:-))
He can and it may be authentic:-))! Even if it is authentic...it will not be practiced as a lesson in schools and will not be presented in concerts. It will be an opportunity for him that's all. May be it will prove that he can mimic that too:-))

ARR now says .....
Rahman plans harmony music concerts
Search for More News
Kolkata, Jan 9: Music wizard A R Rahman, who has taken the western world by storm with live performances, will make his debut under home arc lights with a series of concerts beginning here February 1.
With the who’s who of Indian playback joining him at the ‘Unity of Light’, 10-concert tour, Rahman would enthrall fans across the country and then fly off to charm audiences in the Middle-East, US and Canada.
S P Balasubramanium, Sonu Nigam, Udit Narayan, Hariharan, Shankar Mahadevan, Sukhwinder Singh, Sadhna Sargam, Vasundhara Das and Mahalaxmi Iyer would belt out a medley of film songs composed by Rahman, who would be at the keyboards.
"Events over the last two years across the world have stirred me from within to plan a concert with harmony as the underlying theme. And I am happy I have been able to plan this now,” Rahman told a news conference here today.
The composer, whose hit scores in ‘Roja’, ‘Bombay’, ‘Taal’ and ‘Lagaan’ have been on top of music charts for long, would also sing numbers from popular films and Andrew Lloyd Weber production, ‘Bombay Dreams’.
And he would also have something for the home crowd of Kolkata.
"The concert will have a few translated Rabindra Sangeet renditions. The rest should remain a surprise,” the unassuming musician said. (Agencies)

Irisafuuker,
Not only Ilayaraja, but AR Rehman is also money minded. For TAAL AND LAGAAN, he was charged 3 crore. I dont think with 40-50 films ,ilayaraja is earning that much amount. In this world, all are working for money only. Just remember it. So dont criticize anybody.

Hmmmm.....does Roja's chinna chinna asai sound like it came from KV Mahadevan's influence? Does it sound like its from MSV? Or Naushad? Or S.Jaikishen? Or S.Chowdoury? Or Michael Jackson or Brian May of Queen? Or Peter, Paul & Mary's X'mas collection or Rogers & Hammerstein songs? Or from Bappi Lahiri or Lax-Pyr?
I mean it definitely din sound original. Or does it sound it came from IR's mould? Hmmm....
From: Om Ilayarajave Namaha (@ 203.106.162.123) on: Mon Jan 13 08:42:22 EST 2003
Did IR invent the tabla?
Or did he discover music?
Or is he the sole proprietor of violins?
Or does violin orchestration belong to him?
Was IR MSV's father and guru?
Did he teach MKT how to sing?
Was he the first one to intriduce Tamil songs to the audience?
Is he the one who wrote Sunny I love you first?
Or was he the first one to sing Chittukkuruvi vetkkapaduthu?
Hmmm. mysteries...#
I'm talking abt ARR's first commercial hit having close proximity to IR and you show your vaitherichal like this? Ai yai yai yai yaai. Come on man, show that you got more musical knowledge than this pathetic rubbish. Don't runaway like that.

imo, ARR is capable of making an attempt to do a pure classical movie like sankarabaranam but I am afraid he will do some 'dressings' for them... for example, ghatam would sound as if it was played in 'vengalappanai' or the songers voice would have synthesized ( e.g words starting with 'S' would start with 'ssss') u know what I mean. Problem with him is that he is more of a sound engineer than a composer and he cannot resist that.. it's like keeping the kids away from icecream..
We have to wait and see if he can prove that he is good in all kinds or music.

Listen to IR handling Mayamalavagowla in HTNI, with western classical fusion. Infact IR was arranging to do all 72 Melakartha kritis in this style, but somehow it did't take off.
If ARR is able to do this with the now available modern instruments & his 10 year experience - he can popularize our traditional music globally.
But can he handle it? I think he can.

I think ARR can do straight classical without any of his ARRisms when pushed to do so. Listen to "Chhodo More Baiyyan" from Zubeidaa. Sangamam, while a good album, wouldn't exactly please the purists.

I don't think so. ARR has worked with many other Hindustani classical musicians for his film songs, and also during the recording of Jana Gana Mana for Bharatbala productions.

ARR learn't carnatic music from TV gopalakrishnan besides his score for telugu academy music festival (pre-roja days) was great, so i think he can make authentic Carnatic music.
