Song of the Day: ennuyir thOzhiyE from kaNgaLaal kaithu sei.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/enuyirthozhiye.rm
- This is A.R.Rahman's latest album. Directed by Bharathiraja, it stars newcomers (Vaseegaran and Priyamani). The album is excellent, in my opinion. There is a breezy song by Hariharan (azhagiya Cindrella), a slow duet by Chitra Sivaraman and Karthik and a fast, different number by Harini, probably her best rendition so far. However, my pick of the album is this beautiful song by Unni Menon and Chinmayee. Chinmayee, in particular, is very impressive in this song. Paa.Vijay's lyrics is strange at places (vingaana maatramaa, meignaana maatramaa?!) but is overall unobtrusive.

Some of the reviews in that thread:
- this is very melodious song, Unni Menon's voice is really good in this one. It's has the similar feeling to "Nathiye, Nathiye" from Rhythm. This one really grows on u on the 2nd listening itself!
rating 4/5
- A great slow duet. Nice melody in the background. As for lyrics from what i understood much better then E20U18.Starts off soft and creshendos and we have unni menon come in saying "en uyir thozhiye" great!.Then we get some piano we havent had piano in ARR music in a looong time. Then we get the rest of the instrumentation in its great. Unni Menon gave it his all, and after his part Chinmayee comes in beautifully. And she renders her part beautifully. A great Melodious number after awhile. (5/5)
- En uyir thozhi and cindrella are excellent as well, the type of melodies that have been missing in ARRs movies recently.
- KKS is an excellent example of sheer magic. 'Ennuyir thozhiye' is awesome- Unnimenon sounds so fresh & what can we say about Chinmayi?
- ARR has used piano in this song and experimented with it.Unni menon is back in ARR music and his voice is still fresh. The violin orchestration in the song is simply mind blowing.Again the lyrics is by Pa.Vijay and good lyrics again.Chinmayee has given her best in this song after ’’Kannathil Muthamittal’’.Her voice is weet, sweeter, sweetest. The way in which ARR has tuned the last lines of the two charanams ’’po po yen asai theerndhadhu’’ and ’’thool thool thool aanadhunmai’’ is simply superb and has ARR’s touch.
- En Uyir Thozhiyey - is set in Deva Gandhari or Aarabi. - a fabulous rendition by Unni Menon and chinmayee.
- I completely agree En Uyir tholiye is so special! I love the song specially where chinmayi sings (2:34 minutes).

Except for the Hariharan song, everything else sounds pretty good and fresh in this album. His best in recent times. bb, good choice. Was thinking whether to suggest this song or not yesterday, but forgot about it eventually and there it is today!Check out the catchy "aaha thamizhamma" too. He has incorporated the tune of "senthamizh naadenum pothinile" in a very interesting manner in the prelude/interlude of the song. Barathiraja is probably going to make a mess of it:-) ARR should have saved these tunes for Ayudha ezhuththu.

Vijay, it looked to me as though Hariharan sang his song from memory, and there was no freshness in it. I liked the Karthik-Chitra Sivaraman duet.

bb,
Thanks for making this the SOTWeekend! This is the first song of Unni Menon's that I really like, because this is the first song in all these years where he doesn't sound dead-pan. Chinmayi is getting better songs to showcase her talent, but the best is yet to come. Given more opportunity and experience she's one to watch out for in coming years!

Great pick for SOTD. Both Chinmayi and Unni Menon have rendered the song very very well. It is good to hear singers pronounce the words of the song correctly. Atleast 4 of the songs in KKS have singers pronouncing the words properly.
This song somehow reminded me of the song from "Missiyamma" that starts "Brindavanamum nanda kumaranum". are both of them set in the same raaga or something?

A soothing melody from ARR. Very catchy!! Great to hear Unni Menon after a long time. Chinmayi also sounds good, though her pronounciation isn't as strong as Unni's. She sounded like Kavitha Krishnamurthy at times. But she has a very appealing voice no doubt. Hope she becomes the favorite with all MDs.. Sadhana, watch out!!!
This is perhaps ARR's first song that is loosely based on Shudha SAveri raga (it goes off the raga in the line, "IniyavaLe...")
Murali,
Yes, Brindavanamum Nandakumaranum is the same raga. Other popular Shuddha Saveri songs tuned by IR include:
KAdhal Mayakkam Azhagiya KaNgaL silirkkum (Pudumai Penn)
Sithagathi PookkaLe (Rajakumaran)
RAdha RAdha Nee EngE (Meendum Kokila)
Kovil MaNi Osai (Kizhakke POgum Rayil)
MaNa MagaLe (Thevar Magan)

Nice song today in SOTD. I heard all the songs today morning at home for first time. Liked them. Especially "Theekuriviyai" and "Ennuyir Thozhi". Good work by ARR.

Song of the Day: idhu oru nilaak kaalam from Tik Tik Tik.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/idhuorunila.rm
- Where can I start on this song? The picturization, perhaps? :) Well, watching three underclad heroines is a delight, even in this age of semi-nude vamps and overt titillation. The two interludes are very good, especially the first one. The song itself is symbolic of Ilayaraja and Bharathiraja at the prime of their lives. S.Janaki has made her mark on sensuous songs, doing justice to this one too.
- The lyrics for the song is sensual and appealing. I think it would have turned quite a few heads when it was released. For e.g.,
"paavai kaNdaalE nilavu neLiyaathO!"
"thanga dhEgangaL thuLLi aadaathO"
"kaNNaadi unaik kaNdu kaNgaL koosum
vaanavillum nagachchaayam vandhu poosum
paruvap pookkaL puruvam asaiththaal bhoomi sutraadhu"

A very creative song by IR, with innovative orchastration and Janaki's sensual singing.
Especailly notable is the use of the male voice doing the aalap and 'taan's (Is it IR or T. V. Gopalakrishnan who sang in the "Andhi Mazhai" song?)
The "nadru dana naadru dana" ... portion is just too good.
The song, if re-released today (as such, with no changes) will be topping the charts and be a hot number played in the party circles, no doubt!

Friends,
When 'tik tik tik' did not click ( or should it be 'tik'?!) in the box office, Bharatiraja had said " purintha nam mozhiyil padam eduppathai vida puriyaatha mozhiyil padam eduppathE mEl!".
When asked to comment on this, arasu (of 'arasu bathilgaL' kumudam) gave a 'nach' reply:
" pEsugiRa Bharatirajavai vida pEsaatha BharatirajavE mEl!"
Another song in the film " nERRu intha nEram, aaRRangarai Oram' was by Lata Rajini. On her (voice) , arasu had commented 'jeeni'!

Ennuyir thozhiye- undoubtedly the best melody in KKS.I esp liked the charanam .Among the other songs, "Thee kuruvi" is very novel with Harini's asura gamakams and my pick .
"Aaha thamizhamma" - easy listening , foot tapping with intelligent fusion of the "Senthamizh naadennum"
The starting Hindusthaani swaras in "Anarkali" song is a rip off from Laalgudi's thillaana in Bhimplaas raag and sounded like usual qawali numbers you hear often in Hindi films.

bb, great pick. Should have included the video as well :-) The song sounds so hip even today, thanks to IR going maniacal in this song.
"The song, if re-released today (as such, with no changes) will be topping the charts and be a hot number played in the party circles, no doubt!"
Not to mention, it would have easily put to shame most MTV videos of those days :-) BR was hip and slick in his urban thriller attempts like Sigappu Rojakkal, Tik Tik Tik etc.
Too bad he became strictly a graamaththuraaja after that and his later attempts like Captain Magal looked outdated.
The "naakududhanna dhiranana" humming was later rehashed and reused again in "Ada machchamulla machaan" song sung by SPB/SJ in Chinna veedu. THat was a freaky number as well.

KKS - UK really sounds good.Saw some trailers some time back in SUN TV and honestly I feel ARR has wasted one more set of songs. The hero looked like a more "feminine Abishek".The suddha saveri usage and UK's voice reminds you of Udhadugalil unathu peyar sung by JC and PS in Thanga Rangan by MSV.
Tik Tik - The movie had diaster written all over it.MAdhavi looked fabulous. She chose to wear 2 piece and Radha and Swapana stayed in one piece till the Villian got them. The songs saved the movie for a fortnight. But take out the TVG jathi the song sails pretty close to MooduPani's Vanengum Thanga Vin meengal.
BR gave movies with message and people lapped them up but when he tried movies with "Massage" they were outrightly rejected ....Valibame Vaa Vaa followed suit.
Welcome back CV!
