Thanks once again for NeedD for the web-site that helped me (sure to many others too) to listen to some of my favourite songs I always wanted but did not get them. This is THE definite place for VJ songs.I think this site added lots of value to the VJ thread as well with many sharing their joys and experiences.
Thanks for Naaz for the interview. ( The only complaint I felt it very short).
Thanks for Saravanan for the chronology and lots of interesting and nice trivia.
Kudos for these three.

vijay,
For any hit song (or good song) most of the credit goes to the MD. The singer can enhance the song and make it even better or just do enough to keep the beauty of the song or flatten the song. Uma Ramanan enhanced the beauty of the songs and that is why they became hits, still remembered and are good for repeated listening. That is my opinion. I don't know what your beef is with UR :-) Have you noticed how many beautiful compositions of IR, especially pathos and semiclassical, were flattened by bad choice of singers in the 80s. I wish he had given them to VJ or UR or BSS. But he didn't. I swear this is my last post regarding "nativity" in this thread.
Naaz, welocme back.
Sivaselvam, thank you.

"Have you noticed how many beautiful compositions of IR, especially pathos and semiclassical, were flattened by bad choice of singers in the 80s. "
Bad choice like whom? As far as I know semiclassicals mainly went to KJY,Chitra etc. and they all did a great job.
on UmaR, I think we might have to agree to disagree :-)
On pathos songs, IR can be accused of using himself in many songs, although you cant accuse him of discriminating based on nativity in that case :-)
you have still not given me enough examples from 80s and before on how better singers from TN were sidelined in preference to inferior singers from other states. The singers that you have listed are by no means in the same league as legends like SPB,KJY,SJ,Chitra etc. who sang many of the songs for IR in the 80s.

>>you have still not given me enough examples from 80s and before on how better singers from TN were sidelined in preference to inferior singers from other states. <<
I am not going to. Just to spare the feelings of those who like them.
>>The singers that you have listed are by no means in the same league as legends like SPB,KJY,SJ,Chitra etc. who sang many of the songs for IR in the 80s.<<
You have already made a conclusion that the singers in my list are inferior to the singers in your list. VJ is always first in my list and she is absent in your list. Further explanation from me is pointless. I respect your opinion, however.

Vijay -
A few from 80s that come to mind, instantly, not as bad choices but definitely the best he could have done either. I would have voted for Uma Ramanan, Vani Jairam, or P Suseela for these by IR:
1.Solai Kuyile Kalai Kadhire - Ponnu Orukku Pudhusu. SP Shailaja.
2.Chinnanchiru Vayadhil Enakkor Chiththiram -
Meendum Kokila, SP Shailaja.
3.Naan Paada Varuvai - Udhiri Pookkal, S Janaki (she really blew this one, the other song in the film is a masterpiece.)
4.Yamunai Aatrile Eera Kaatrile - Thalapathi, Mithali Singh.
5. Shenbagame Shenbagame - Enga Ooru Paatukkaran, Asha Bhonsle. ( Comapre with the Sunanda version of the same song to feel the difference.)
6. Malargalil Aadum Ilamai Pudhumaiye (?) - Kalyanaraman, S P Shailaja.
7. Isaiatrile something - Pattukku Oru Thalaivan, Chitra.
8. Deiviga Ragam - Ullasa Paravaigal, Jency.(A singer whose voice was all nose, and who was still given many opportunities by the whimsical mr. raja. Hindi counterpart Salma Agha luckily turned out to be a one film wonder.)
More as and when I think of them.
Saravanan -
You made me search out my mess of a library and listen to Naadhamenum Kovililey. Worth every bit of the excavation!

Naaz, I dont agree with 1,3 and 7 in your list straightaway.
SJ is a great choice for singing that freaky song 3. The song needed a lot of konashtais which were perfectly placed and executed well by SJ.
Secondly, I dont think IR asking SPS or Chitra to sing those songs in your list is because he was discriminating based on nativity. That, I feel, is absurd :-)
"I would have voted for Uma Ramanan, Vani Jairam, or P Suseela for these by IR:
"
and I would have voted for SJ, PS or Chitra :-)
and BTW, isnt PS from Teluguland?
And SPS HAS given songs like "raasave unna thaan" etc. where she was pretty decent. She was anyways used mainly for dance numbers and such..
The examples in your list are few, highly subjective and dont illustrate how inferior singers from other states were given more opportunities.
and Asha Bhonsle is a legend. IR giving few opportunities to legends like Asha, Lata etc. in the late eighties is not the same as every run-of-the-mill singer from Mumbai getting an opportunity to maul songs in TFM these days.
NeelD, you have diverted the topic from discrimination againt TN singers to discrimination against VJ :-) IR not giving enough opportunities to your idol VJ doesnt mean he was discriminating against singers from TN as a whole :-) He might have had some differences with particular singers/lyricists which might have prevented him from using them more often.
Once again no one has explained as to why IR, who himself is a tamilian, should favour singers from other states? what does he stand to gain?
what about his predecessor MSV? was he discriminating too based on nativity? :-)
My point is none of the singers from other states who sang CHUNK of the songs for IR, like SPS, PS, SJ, Chitra were grossly inferior to the local talent that we had. In fact, the reverse was true.

Vijay -
I was not pursuing the nativity argument. I was only pointing out (what I feel) would have been better choices in the random list I provided. And only because you asked for a few samples.
I really don't want to get into why IR did what he did, or didn't do what he should have done. I never really understood his whimsies.
However, contemplating such things is both futile and exhausting. Not to mention, acrimonious.
About the Mumbai singers and their mas(s)ticating appeal...Well, if you can make the time to transcribe the full lyrics of Shakalaka Baby for me, I'd send a few hosannas in your name heavenward.
"Grossly inferior" - I am not sure how I am supposed to read this. Isn't inferior bad enough? Does it have to be "grossly inferior" to be considered "inferior" in the first place?
I need to ponder that a bit.

Naaz, the discussion I was having with NeelD was about discrimination based on nativity which was his point, not mine. I was just disputing his notion that there existed such discrimination in the 80s and before. Shakalaka baby came in the later 90s when the trend of mauling lyrics was already in vogue. I guess you didnt read all the previous posts :-)
""Grossly inferior" - I am not sure how I am supposed to read this. Isn't inferior bad enough? Does it have to be "grossly inferior" to be considered "inferior" in the first place?
"
"Grossly inferior" means inferior to the point where everyone knows and agrees that the guy(or girl) cant sing or pronounce to save his life. There exists very little subjectivity as far as the singer's inferiority is concerned. Whereas in your examples, it is definitely not very obvious (except in a couple of cases) that the singers chosen were outright inferior to the ones you have suggested.

At the risk of repeating myself.
I have not used the word inferior in the above. Subjectivity is a good word. Maybe we should keep it.
