  Hey folks!
  
  Just a quick update...
  
  Astonishing as it may be, my cousin and I actually got chosen for the finals of that singing competition thing... Amazing, huh?
  
  The thing that really, really bugged me, though, was that they told us we had to sing two songs, but on the actual day, due to shortage of time, we were told to sing only HALF of ONE song. (We sand Irava Pagala) Another scary thing that happened was when we actually went up on stage, and the guy in charge of the music (people from Singapore might know him... ya know, Elias??) and he asked us what song we were singing and we told him and he looked at us blankly. Apparently, none of the musicians had heard of the song before. So he asked us what sort of song it was and we told it it was pretty slow and then when we started singing, he gave us this punding, pulsating beat that was something like twice the speed of the original song...
  
  oh well...
  
  And now, I need some advice. I need a song that has a good beat, that sounds nice and preferably, something that will help me and my cousin win. or at least, dont lose face in front of my relatives. I was thinking of Malaiyay Malaiyay from Amma. What do you think?

  My congratulations.
  I don't know the song you have mentioned and definitely don't know the lyrics. :-))
  Why don't you sing a popular song that is difficult to render. But do practise a lot.

  I suppose that you only get RTM2 in Singai. There are channels like TV3, Metrovision & ntv7. The latter screens seven solid hours of non-stop Indian programmes every Sunday.
  But I digress. There are many such competitions conducted in Malaysia, but mostly braodcast over radio. Some of these are conducted quite professionaly with very good prizes and with tremendous publicity. I remember one a couple of years ago, which was won by a university student. He chose to sing "Sangeetha jaathi mullai" - you know how difficult it is to sing that song, but he was really good.

  SK - I can guarantee you that it won't be a pleasant sight. :-))
  
  The singing competitions are not regular weekly programmes. I will certainly inform you on such broadcasts in future.
  
  If you like amateur singing, do tune in to Kalappadam at 9.15 on Sundays and also another masala programme at 8.15 pm, also on Sundays.

  SK: I think you are referring to 'Udhaya Thaaragai' - an yearly programme. It may start very soon. But the singers are very mediocre; many won't even qualify for AV Ramanan's sapthaswarangal, IMHO.

  and actually, the thing I went for is never going to be broadcast anywhere.. Its in some centre somewhere...
  And also, referring to RRs comment that many of the singers on Udhaya Tharagai are mediocre, I think that while being somewhat true, we also have to at least give them credit for trying. I say this, because I too, fall into the category of mediocre singers.. :) So i have to support them a bit..
  
  And NOV, the song, Malaiyay Malaiyay!! You have never heard it?? Oh my goodness! Okay, hold on while I type it out. I know my transliteration is bad, but bear with me.. Maybe you will recognise it after a while. If you still cant, then give me your number, and I will CALL you and sing it to you.
