In the long run, can it be possible to mobilise the best talents among Indian students to form a TFM troupe? If this is possible, then we can have more frequent performances at various Indian associations as they can support these programmes and we don't have to think hard on how to popularise IR's songs especially. If this idea is debatable in this forum why not we ask for talents attending in this forum itself? These talented musicians/singers should be extremely good so they don't have to meet regularly to practice it is also opportunity to display our latent musical skills. After few years, we can get lot of supprt and invite TFM legends to be guests. I am thinking we wont have problems because Indian films in general don't have copyright issues.

RajaFan,
How do we organise this troupe. This has to be state wise. We can have a group of troupes from different states which have more tamil population and may be think of consolidate them later.

Dorai and Raja Fan,
I already have a group and we have performed at a number of occasions. Noteworthy performances include Fetna conference Prime Time Concert in July 1998 (St.Louis) and one coming up at Atlantic City, New Jersey on July 4th,1999 (Fetna again). We also recently performed at Dallas (Jan 30th) and New York (Telugu March 20th). We perform full length (3+ hours)concerts in Tamil, Telugu or Hindi. Why don't you encourage our efforts by arranging for a concert in your city/state. I will provide sample cassette, publicity materials etc.
Thanks for your efforts.

aruLarasan,
No I'm not a drummer. I mainly sing and play the keyboards some. I have performed with Venky too and provided the male vocal leads in his album (released as a CD) Himalayan Dreams (both in Tamil and Telugu). However, I have a separate group of musicians and lady singer. Mostly we play live music (non-sequenced).

Srinath is a thamizh speaking bass guitarist. But unfortunately he is not in St. Louis (lucky for you). Plus he does'nt play non IR songs, which means you are not going to get any latest hit songs for say, the last 10 years:-)) (Could'nt resist it!!!)

Guys:
I won't be able travel around for shows for the next few months for various reasons. That is why I did not take this up seriously. In fact, I even got an opportunity to play for a Tamizh Sangam here but had to turn it down as I was busy with some stuff.

Hi guys,
I am Vijayakumar. Well I play keyboards in San Francisco Bay Area's only indian multi-lingual light music group PALLAVI. PALLAVI has earned a very good reputation in the bay area and have been doing concerts here in SF bay area (california) since early 96. Visit our website for more details http://www.grin.net/~sankris/Pallavi
PALLAVI started doing performances only in tamil cine songs, then moved over to telugu, kannada and hindi (now performing predinantly in Tamil and Hindi; with an occasional telugu and kannada).
We have doing a multi-lingual program, coming up on 3rd Apr (a fundraiser for Sankara Eye Foundation, USA). More info about links for this program can be found in our site. If you are interested in watching our show, contact immediately. Tickets are almost sold out (950+ auditorium). We have done our own compositions twice before too. So, check out!!!
Its nice to hear about other groups in the US performing and travelling. PALLAVI has not experimented with travelling yet. Already we have been busier than ever (about a program every 50 to 60 days). Thats too much of an effort.
BTW, we have about 8 dedicated instrumentalists and 7 to 8 singers. Music is not our profession. Its our interest and a side hobby.
But we certainly would want to give it a shot outside of our place. But we dont have a sample real-audio of our live performance on our web yet. We hope to do it soon so that people can hear for themselves.
BIBI
V Vijayakumar

Guys,
Need a favor. I am putting together a list of songs for the Fetna Conference (Thamizh) program in Atlantic City, NJ on July 4th 1999. We will have four singers - Sanjeev, Sheela, Anuradha Sriram (India) and myself. One of the items I want to include, considering that this is the last year of the millennium, is a medley of TFM songs from 40s to 90s. We will be singing only the pallavi or charanam for each song (about 30 to 40 seconds per song). Obviously, it is better if these are super hits of the time period they represent. Would it be possible for the seasoned and knowledgeable (exemption given to Raj) DFers to come up with recommendations/suggestions so that I can prepare a comprehensive and representative list of hits. Eventually, I will be having 24 songs (bits) i.e about 4 per decade 'average'. Please include the decade reference for my benefit.
I am thinking about these songs as of now.
1. Manmadha leelaiyai (MKT - Decade ???)
2. Oru Naal pOdhumaa (60s?)
3. Kaalaiyum neeyE, maalaiyum neeyE (???)
4. AzhaikkaadhEy (PS ???)
5. Malarndhu malaraadha (Paasa malar ??)
Thanks for your help.
Raja Govindarajan.
