What's the greatest song that Ilayaraja has composed?

What's the greatest song that Ilayaraja has composed? I think it is "Kanmani, anbodu..." from "Guna". The thing I like about this song is that Ilayaraja has cleverly used a "happy" tune for a sad situation in the film. What do you guys think?

Let me list all the songs that I think deserve to be called the best:-

....and a few dozens more I can't recollect at the moment!

theiviiga rAgam ..thevittAtha pAdal..kEttalum poThum ..I like this for the tune which does justice to the lyrics (i am making an understatement here). The orchestration really helps to create the classic effect. This song is very unique. It has the IR stamp boldly emblazoned on it. I have not found a similar song anywhere else or in other MD's work. It seems to be a fusion of ICM+WCM with really ambient singing.
I suggest that naming songs may not be that useful. It is better if somebody gives reasons/elaborates why they like that song.Helps others appreciate it as well.

I don't recall which movie this song is from. I have it in a cassette titled '82 hits (IR). I play this song in my car during long drives. The sheer inanity keeps me awake :-)

I have a collection of around 100+ cassettes with me. Beautification of IR's composing is in 100's of songs, not just one or 2. Let me just write from my collection , few , very few. I am mentioning about DUETS only.

KANMANIYE KATHAL YENBATHU - AARILIRUNDHU ARUBATHUVARI
CHINNANCHIRU VAYATHIL - MEENDUM KOKILA
ANTHI MAZHAI POZHIGIRATHU - RAJA PAARVAI
NEELA KUYILAE UNNODU - MAGUDI
MEGAM KARUKKUTHU - ANANDA RAGAM
YETHO MOHAM - KOZHI KOOVUTHU
VELLZI PURA ONDRU - PUTHU KAVITHAI
SOLAI POOVIL MALAI THENDRAL - VELLAI ROJA
and so on , so on ....

All the above mentioned songs, IR has mixed fantastic usage of Violin, Flute and see the melody of all above. Like this I have too many cassette collection of duets with me.

Thanks for giving me an opporutnity to tell my feelings about his great composing. What I have mentioned is TIP OF AN ICEBERG. Not more than that... Bye friends

he says how when the director gave the situation as: a poet singing about his love (that's all; nothing else was mentioned) he came up with the song mAnjcOlai kiLi dhAnO. again he mentions how he could produce the song mAlaiyil yArO malarOdu pEsa for a non-situation. (i have paraphrased; therefore there could be, as always, some misinterpretation. please, use your own filters to remove noise :-) )

Most of you seem to think it is almost impossible to name just one. We can classify his songs into Carnatic music-based songs, folk songs, love songs, western classical music-based songs, and lullabies, and you could say which you think is the best under each of these genres. Would that make it any easier?
These are the songs that I like the most:
Folk: Raasaathi unna... from "Vaidhehi kaathirundhazh"
Love: "Nilaavae vaa" from "Mouna Raagam"
Lullaby: "Kanae kalaimaanae" from "Moonraam pirai",
Other: "Kanmani, anbodu..." from "Guna"
And by the way, we're talking about his best so far.

Kupps..oru vAnavil pOlE is an amazing song. What movie is that ?
BTW, muthu mani mAlai song has a very interesting beat pattern. There seems to be a slight delay between cycles. I am not sure whether you can program these things in a drum machine :). Even if I am not kidding somebody with drum machine programming experience should clarify this.
Vijay..I tried to do some kind of classification like you did. But because of lack of time/perseverance on my part I could not follow it up.
