paran..
very fast!
I'm totally hooked to it now!
Meenaxi - My tale of eight songs! :)
Yeh Rishta - A beautiful rendition by Reena Bhardwaj, the same lady who dazzled us with her sweet voice in "Baba kicchu tha". I love the way the song progresses after the sound of water falling... the voice.. a tiny piece of veena.. more water..the voice again(oozing confidence, yet maintaining such a rare quality of innocence)... the steadily increasing beat... Crescendo!
Pure class.
Chinnamma Chilakkamma... I guess the beauty of the song lies in it's own brand of complex simplicity, with a very rustic yet polished feel! A paradox that makes you visualise the streets of Hyderabad. It is very evident that Sukhwinder Singh (who's penned the lyrics too) has enjoyed every minute of this recording! Naveen, on the flute, impresses with a sound that's halfway between a whistle and a birdcall. :)
Catchy.
Do Kadam Aur Sahi... typical Sonu Nigam! When I heard it for the first time, it sounded very complex.. a couple of listenings later, the song seems so fluid! The kind of song that touches that feel-good part of you brain, the kind that finds it way straight to your heart.
Smooth!
Cyclist's rhythm - It's not for nothing that ARR holds Naveen and Sivamani (oh yeah.. Mr. Rhythm himself) in such high regard. Begins with a steady rhythm composed using cycle bells(!).. Then the flute alternating between the left and right channels... An enterprising duet with Naveen's hauntingly calm pieces and Sivamani's belligerence. Sivamani goes wild with his beats punctuated by whistles and Naveen chills our bones for one last time with an eerie finish. :)
A brilliant effort from the guy who wants all "sound" to be "music".
Creative.
Dhuan Dhuan - Asha Bhonsle & AR Rahman. What a team! Look at the lady go! When everything in Bollywood is stereotyped, she refuses to be slotted into a particular genre. Kunal gives the song a different feel with his voice modulations. Another song that you tends to grow on you after repeated listenings. A change of rhythm in the middle portion and Asha's voice all of a sudden transforms from seductive to painful pining. The Asha - Rahman combination weaves magic yet again.
Smoky! :)
Rang hai - Is that really Alka Yagnik?! It starts dangerously like a hybrid between "Mein Albeli"(Zubeidaa) and "Rang de"(Thakshak). And then.. it just takes off! There's even a bit with the snake charmer's instrument with a touch of Scottish in it. Noticed how this album is filled w/ the word Rang? It's MF Husain's baby, duh! :) Dallinda makes you go "Woah!" with a superbly rendered bit.(I'm so addicted to it that I keep humming it and my mom's like "You alright?") :)
Colourful!
(Pun fully intended for the final descriptions of the two previous songs!) :)
Potter's Village - Where did Rahman learn to spot talent? He almost always finds his mark. Every 'find' of his has gone on to make a mark in the world of film music. Now we have Hossam Ramzy as the percussionist along with John Themis on the guitar doing their jig, and doing a good job at that. I may be mistaken in thinking Hossan's Rahman's find.. He may be a leading percussionist for all I know. But this is the first time I've noticed him on the credits and he impresses alright!
Captivating.
Noor-un-ala-noor - Rahman seems to be specialising in Qawalis for HFM! :) Words written by MF Husain himself, Rahman comes up with yet another composition that gives you that feeling of sitting on that mattress and clapping your hands, and (Mom.. forgive me!) smoking the hookah! Maybe he was trying to go a step above "Wedding Qawali" (Bombay Dreams). Murtuza Khan and Qadir Khan (the same folks who sang the swaras in "Anarkali" (Kangalal Kaidhu Sei") come up with a lively number.
Allah-hu-AKbar!
On the whole, a must-buy for every Rahmaniac and those who appreciate music that's pure, different and not the least bit cliched.

Meenaxi is the album of the Century, it has revived HFM and added to that, nobody ever can make an album like this. The only sales figure that could beat this album is another ARR album

Heard the song Chinnama chilakamma, an implicit reaction was comparing with another Ar rahman fusion number Jiya Jale - Dilse, since Chinama chilakamma is more authentic and rustic it takes a while to sink in unlike Jiya jale but sure its a nice number.

Goods songs. I'm totally hooked to dhuan dhuan and yeh rishta. Asha Bhonsle's rendition of dhaun dhaun is really amazing.Though i liked the qawwali number NoorUnAlaNoor, it sounded a little like an old Mukesh song that goes hum to tere aashiq hai sadiyon purane or something like that.

Hossam Ramzy is Egypt's percussion ambassador.
Led Zep invited him to record and tour with them.
He's also worked with peter gabriel.
