Dear Guys,
VM once said about ARR while releasing Karuthamma that " Ilayaraja Gramathilirundhu Vandhavar, Avar Graamiya Isai Amaippadhu Periya Aacharyyam Illai, But ARR Oru Nagaratthu Vaalibar, Avar Graamatthu Isai Amaippadhudhan Periya Saadhanai"..
but what I say is:
Gramathil therukoothu pottavar Royal Philharmonic Orchestrala Symphony pottadha marandhuteengalada??
I need your sincere opinion about this guys..

Everybody knows that ARR is far superior than IR, so there wasn't any need for people to know this fact from VM.
btw
Did anyone listen to Symphony in the first place in order to forget all about it?

>>>Did anyone listen to Symphony in the first place in order to forget all about it?
Nice question..It is more than a chidhambara ragasiyam.
ARR is composing 5 symphonies of Air Tel. They might not be symphonies in real sense. But, he is composing some thing and releasing for others to hear. His symphony will definitely make others to listen, because they are ring tones and one has to listen and lift the cell phone.
IR's symphony still in the embrionic stage after 10 long years. Asura prasavam.

What does vairamuthu know about the intricacies of music ? Does he know whats a invertible counterpoint to the tenth ? Does he know whats harmony ? Does he know whats accompaniment ? Just cuz he gets chance to write songs, doesnt give him the credit to rate who is a better musician or not. And people to have taken his comment serious is just laughable, albiet pathetically.

Beethoven always sounds to me like the upsetting of bags of nails, with here and there an also dropped hammer.
--John Ruskin to John Brown, 1881
Best musicians always have critics.. Especially in symphony world the critics will be most unforgiving. In India we don't have enough knowledgable critics. In salangai oli Shailaja dance gets good reviews from all sundries except from Kamal. Out of so many reporters he is the only one pinpoints the flaws in her dance. That is the scenario we have. But in western countries Classical music will always have more critics. Is there any critic to find fault with dance of Prabhu Deva in India? Nobody. That doesn't make him a better dancer than Padma subramaniam or the likes. Pop music and classical music are two very different genres. Let us not quick to judge about IR's classical work. IR is just a straight shooter.Very sensitive person. Even if our people listen to symphony you think they will understand the movements of symphony no.1. Most defenitely not. When IR visited Germany he was looked down upon by Germans for two reasons. First he was dark. Second he spoke English. In movie world one can feel secure in UK. But in Classical music you are on your own. No indian will be there to support you.
What is a symphony then?
A symphony is a full length composition of European classical music. For a full orchestra as defined in European classical music. In a Large European Symphony orchestra there are 25-30 violins, 20-25 violas, 12-15 Cellos, and 7-10 basses. (from the string section) then there are 3 flutes, 3 oboes, 3 bassons and 3 clarinets (from the wood wind section) then there are 2 french horns, 2 english horns, 2 tubas and 2 trombones (from the brass section) and then there is a huge drum for dramatic orchestral effect. and sometimes this is accompanied with a 70 people chorus. The Symphony usually follows a form of composition called the sonata form which consists of four movements (or to explain in simpler terms four parts) the first movement is usually the allegro (Italian for fast)in which the principal theme for the large instrumental composition or music is exposed. The second movement is called the adagio which is (italian for slow) and a second theme is introduced and it elaborates the first and the core idea of the symphony is dealt with in a very intense structural treatment and also emotional understanding without getting sentimental. The third movement is the andante (or the moderately flowing and paced ) here a hopeful theme is expressed elaborating on the theme expressed in the second and the first but especially the first and the final movement is callewd the Finale which is (usually described as molto allegro) that is (Italian for very fast). The finale is the conclusion of the composition and is short but triumphant and very exhaulting. This is just a general outline for symphonies to begin with.
Don't you think allowing a regional MD in India to compose for RPH is an honor for us? He became the first asian composer to compose a symphony.
No matter whether it got released. He reached that level. Be proud of him instead of taking potshots at him.

OK, Europeans have actually realised there mistake for allowing stupid musicians like IR to compose Symphony & that's why they dumped the album & forgotten all about it. Its only pathetic people like Unmai, sorry Awe still living with sad memories. If IR is that good, why should he waste his time in Tamil film industry. The fact is nobody will talk about him if he leaves the film industry!!!
So Unmai can waste his time in this forum just like his guru waste his time in Tamil film music.

worst "Gnana sunyams"? You once again has proved that you are least knowledgable person in this entire forum. Keep up with your good work.

ST,
Excellent.
Now get up in the morning, take a cold shower, do your 'Gayathri Jabam' and then put ARR's "Dheena Maalai" muslim devotional album.
Ada ada ada.. enna deyveegam !!
Being such devout ARR fans, i would expect you guys to alteast arrange for a ARR's Dheena Maalai, in Madras Music Academy, or the Naradha Gaana Sabha.

After a sensible first couple of posts, sad to see the commenting and lamenting yet again.
IRR-ARR free-for-alls have been in this forum since 1997-98. If a rabble-rouser puts something about some MD(and runs into the street naked, victoriously shouting EUREKA EUREKA) he is merely re-inventing the wheel :)

It looks like the number of response I get from IR fans are far greater than the number of IR's film music sales. Well done guys !!!
Its better to waste your time in this forum than listening to IR's irritating music. Anyway if not Ivan there are plenty of Avans. Enna purinchutha? !!!

AWE:
Good to see a sensible posting from you. Ya, I have seen a program in UGC educational time, where they were explaining about Symphony. It was in 1996, I guess.
Now, RPH did not call IR, but IR approached RPH to play his composition. He should have naturally paid money for that. So, the composition happens to be his property. Then why the hell he is not releasing that.?

Are Yaar composers don't pay money for that. But IR allowed his complex get the better of him. He broke up with several artists starting from VM, BR, BC, MR... thanks to his mysterious complex. If only he had some kind of marketing ability and good public relationship he would have achieved so many things. I wouldn't be disappointed if IR is just another composer. He is a genius. We all can see that. But it is just that he was not aggressive enough. But for millions of tamil fans he is a mysterious phenomenon. http://webhome.idirect.com/~rlevy/current_question.html Read the article on IR by Prasanna. Hope you guys know about Prasanna.. his website is also interesting.. http://raajangahm.com/guitarprasanna/ prasanna's website http://www.guitarprasanna.com/Career/Films/ Ironically I come across people who are so dismissive about IR only in TFM forum.

gr8 posting by Awe though its not related to the thread... anyways, can we hv a discussion of the BGMs or songs in TFM which fulfill the definition of a symphony or atleast come near to a symphony?
Let me start with the end-BG that comes in the song "Pollaadha madhana baanam".

It was an excellent response from AWE.It was an honour to the indians that illayaraja did something which no asians did untill him in europe.being a musician i think IR had a very versatile sense of music than any other in india.I think people are wasting their energy in putting IR down and ARR up or ARR down and IR up.I think if they spend that energy in music they will become better MDs than IR or ARR.

whether IR paid the RPH or they approached him the following facts remain-
they sent an observer to India ,who was apparently so astonished with Ir's speed and quality, gave the go ahead for the symphony to be written-this was done in 1 month.
This was conducted by John scott, himself a noted composer and conductor-they must have discussed and discussed before going for the recording.
do you think any T,D and harry can have his work performed by a traditional british insitution just because RPH are paid some money?
They gave IR a standing ovation after the recording-money can buy you time from the RPH-but a standing ovation-?these players are veterans who have seen it all and performed all sorts of complex works.
so think about all this before repeating like parrots that he commissioned RPH(or in your 'bashai'-paid them) to perform his symphony.
a villager from austria(mozart) or a villager from germany(beethoven) can write symphonies-it is not a big deal.but a vilager from madurai wrting a symphony-THAT is an acheivement.
