Well, SP Baala Subraamanyam in men and S. Jaanaki in women are the most resourceful vocalists in southern India, that is obvious to every listener. But their duets, hmmm.

SPB+SJ & SPB+PS combo was really a treat to the ear, SPB + KSC was not bad either, but currently there is no one to replace these singers!

Jaanaki had a rare distinction.
She remained the topmost female singer in all the four languages from 1983 to 1987.

Combination of SPB+SJ is a powerful combination and a treat to us. SJ has an edge over SPB in such combintion. No one can match their vocal strengths.

SJ has an edge over SPB-This is evident in most of the duets where she dominates in her delivery and overshadows SPB
e.g.song-Anthi mazai pozigirathu-ups and downs
ninaithalle inikkum-humming

SPB, Chitra IMO is a better pair than SPB, Janaki :)...well comparing the telugu version of sundhari from dalapathi to the tamil version and I think chitra does a better job... all in my opinion of course.

Kannada was the first language to be dominated by S. Jaanaki. She had
been singing for films for a decade-and-a-half, yet was far away from
her due place. About 1975 she had become the most important and the
most prolific female singer in Kannada. After this belated recognition,
doors of success openened for her one after another. Second language
to be conquered by her was Malayaalam, in approximately 1978. However,
in the other two southern languages she met a stiff resistance for the
top slot. In Tamil, P Susheela had been ruling for almost two decades.
Jaanaki had been a far second for quite some time. In the late 70's
S Jaanaki closed up the gap, both in numbers and importance, however,
Susheela's reign was unrelenting. Only about 1981, did Jaanaki surpass
P. Susheela to become the topmost female singer in Taamil. Telugu
proved to be even more of a challenge. Even untill mid 70's SJ was a
very far flung runner-up to P Susheela. So complete had been the rule
of PS in Telugu that for almost two decades there had been no other
notable female singer. By the end of 70's Susheela was still way ahead
of SJ. Things, however, started changing with the arrival of new
decade. Jaanaki was gaining very rapidly in Telugu, whereas PS was
losing very slowly. In 81 and 82, both the prolific singers were almost
equal in every respect, importance as well as number of songs. Only in
1983 did Jaanaki take over from P. Susheela. Surprisingly, PS was still
giving her tough time, and was dangerously close at heels behind her.
This situation lasted untill 1984. Only then S Jaanaki's top slot in
Telugoo was secure.
Thus, from 83 onwards, S Jaanaki remained the most important singer in
all the four languages, for a few years.
Ironically and interestingly, it was Kannada again that precipitated the
downfall of her career. Untill 1987 she had a complete sway over Kannada
film music. But in 88, Chitra emerged from almost nowhere, and toppled
S. Jaanaki's reign, to become the most important female singer in Kannada.
For 1988, most probably S.J. was still most prolific, but in importance
Chitra had taken over from her. This development led to the fact that
by 90-91 Jaanaki had almost completely vanished from Kannada music.
Telugu was wrested from her in 1989. Here too, like in Kannada, she
vanished completely by 1991-92. Malayaalam was also absconded by her in
1989. She had concentrated all her attention to Taamil songs. SJ kept her
top position in Tamil until 1993. In the last few years of her rule in
Taamil, S. Jaanaki had a tough competition for the top pedestal in the
form of K.S.C.

s. janaki is the equally talented singer in the south compared to Lata Mangeskar in the North. Even malasia vasudevan has admitted that singing with janaki is difficult and they had sing very carefully to keep pace with her voice. the voice of sj is a great gift for music industry. she has the talent to portray versatality in her voice easily. She is really good still. And ARR has also used her once in a way and has given very good songs to her.

4. Oru naal unnodu from film Uravaadum nenjam

The SPB-SJ combo was truly a fantastic combination in the history of SI film music. Even the SPB-PS combo was not bad but could not match the above pair.
The Lata-Rafi pair and Asha-Rafi pair were by far the best in the North and the Lata-Rafi pair is probably the best ever in any form of music......Rafi-Suman K. was also a good pair.......this reminds me of one song by the Rafi-Asha combo, and Rafi's rendering of this song moved SPB to tears........"deewana hua badal" from "Kashmir Ki Kali".
Cheers
