SPB's greatest songs

I'd like to discuss the finer points of some of SPB's greatest songs ( I am sure the list is going to be endless )

  SPB stylea kettave pullarikkudhu. I was listening to "Vandhal MAhalaksmiye" from the film "Uyarndha Ullam". A very sweet song, but the way SPB sang it, I was getting tears in my eyes. You can't explain that feeling. Infact, I just don't know what kind of a feeling it was. It is not even tears of joy. The feeling you get when listening to SPB's songs is beyond words.
  This song is followed by "Thenmadurai Vaigainathi" from a famous Rajnikanth Movie(forgot the name). This song is set in an altogether different mood. A man showers his love on his younger brother. The way SPB sang it fits the mood more than perfectly. He sings it very seriously with none of his gimmicks showing up in most of the song(except in one place when he sings on his lover, that too done in a mesmerising way).
  
  But to top it all. "KAdhalin Dheepamondru" is a masterpiece. Frankly, if I am to die even in the most gruesome way, I'll die in joy, if I'm hearing this song. Ofcourse, Isaignani takes the credit for the tunes.
  
  Its a pity that SPB is also singing for guys like Deva, Sirpi and even ARR. I feel really annoyed whan I hear SPB singing "Kappaleri Poyachu" or "Maya Machindra". What a total misuse of SPB!
  SOngs with no life!
  I must be thankful to Deva for onething. He spared SPB from singing songs having words like "Andhoni.. Alponsu.."

  Please do not forget the National Award winning song "Thanga Thamarai Magalae" by SPB for Minsara Kanavu. I felt it was an insult to the great singer by ARR, making him sing in that way.
  
  SPB' voice is unique and divine. What i mean by divine is only few can make it like him. Even his son cannot sing like him. So such singers are only born and he himself has to be reborn to bear such a voice.

  Countless songs, but I'll try to restrict myself to 10 of his best, IMO
  **warning** I'm so IR-biased that I'm near-deaf to his good songs for other MDs :-)***
  
  1 "Mudhal Mudhalaga Kaadhal Duet" - Niram Maaradha Pookkal - is a perfect example of the playfulness he can bring into singing; esp. in the charanams, u can feel his joyful mirth
  2 "Kanmaniye Kaadhal Enbadhu" - 6-60 varai - can't adequately describe the feeling he brings to this
  3 "Ponmaalai Pozhudhu" - Nizhalgal - an early one of his many superb solos under IR's baton.
  4 "Unnai Vida Matten" - Vanaja Girija - is what I consider a recent masterpiece, IMO. listen to this on a quiet night & you'll see why
  5 "Nilavu thoongum neram" - Kunguma Chimizh - this is a killer, in fact, most songs of SPB/IR with "nila" as a starter are knock-out gems (nilaave vaa, ilaya nila, nila kayum neram saranam, nilavondru kanden....)
  6 "Adhikaalai Nerame" - Meendum oru kaathal kathai - is a (unfortunately lesser known) great duet
  7 "Meendum Meendum Vaa" - Vikram - another example of the peerless SPB/SJ duo
  No description needed for the foll. gems:
  8 "Pani Vizhum Malar Vanam" - Ninaivellam Nithya
  9 "Mounamana Neram" - Salangai Oli
  10 "Andhi Mazhai" - RaajaParvai

  What is wrong about the song "Thanga thaamarai magalae"? I feel, except SPB, no other singer, could have made that song a hit. SPB has sung some great songs for ARR like 'en kaadhalae' ('Duet'), 'minnalae...' ('May Maadham'). There are junks, no doubt like 'Parotta' ("Vandicholai Chinraasu"), 'ottagathai kattikko' ("Gentleman"). Of course, it is the IR-SPB combo that will be more remembered than the ARR-SPB combo. But, still ARR also has given some good songs with SPB as singer. I will say SPB has some great songs for other MDs music like 'paadum podhu naan thendral kaatru' and 'iyarkai ennum ilaya kanni'.

  There was this comment made by SPB himself about 'Thangathamarai..' in one of his live concerts:
  
  'andha varusham evvalavo nalla paadalgalai vittuttu idhukku award kuduthirukkaanga! yaen kuduthaangannu-thaan enakku puriyale! yetho situation-kku thaguntha maathiri irukkunnu oru kaaranam solraanga.. sari.. neenga aasai pattu kettathanaala ippo athai paadaren!'
  
  It's apparent that he didn't think it is such a great song and all... just another run-of-the-mill song for him! Also, his facial expressions when he was singing it were hilarious!!
  
  I personally feel he needn't have shouted to such an extent in that song. I mean, it's set in an undesirably high pitch.

  Thanks for that information. Of course, it was not the great song of SPB. But, what I wanted to say was, it is quite a good, or shall I say, not a bad, song. Also, I think, no other singer could have sung that song better than SPB.

  A lovely melody which easily touches my heart. The way SPB had rendered the charaNam was marvellous and you can feel the 'urukkam' in his voice! There are sublte SPB-stamp-rendering in certain words, esp.ly

  ezhuthiya anbu ilakkaNam thavaraagalaam
  
  esp.ly that "laaaaaam...".. Oh boy! its aural pleasure. I cant put it in words here.

  I am surprised that u missed 'Sangeetha Jaathi Mullai'. In fact several songs in that film 'Kaadhal Oviyam' were by SPB. Ok, here is my list:
