Raagas used with specific mention/ purpose/ knowledge

Can you list specific instances in movies where a raaga has been used...

1. with a pre-determined plan to fit that raaga in the storyline

2. with a particular mention about that raaga in the movie in any scene, thereby showing the grasp of the director over his composer and knowledge of music

3. use of a specific raaga with a purpose

All 3 are to do with usage of a raaga with a purpose and complete knowledge of both the composer and director.

Examples:

1. Lalitha raagam for 'idhazhil kadhai ezhuthum' in Unnal Mudiyum Thambi. Remember? Seetha's name was Lalitha Kamalam in the movie! I'm sure this was KB's idea! Or was it IR's?

2. Use of suddha danyasi in the same movie (punjai undu nanjai), it was mentioned later by Gemini Ganesan in the movie! Was it an afterthought by KB or was it planned?

3. The song 'azhaithaal varuvale' from Jadhi Malli..incredible composition by Maragathamani. The raaga names are in the song itself...Sriranjani and Sivaranjani and Mukesh mizes both to make Kushboo get over her anger. I'm sure this is KB's idea! But very well executed by Maragathamani!

4. The only instance with ARR (and a non KB movie) I rememebr is the mention of nattaikurunji by Mammooty at the end of the 'kannamoochi yenada' song in KKKK.

5. Film: Sigaramam, Music: SPB. SPB discusses about the Pilu raagam with his wife Rekha and then composes his 'vannam konda vennilave' number.

Any more interesting instances??

  only these four lines are based in Bhairavi! Which is very interesting as MSV/KB have thought of mentioning it in the song itself. The rest of the songs, if I'm right is in Mahati!
  
  Another example as far as I can recollect:
  
  Ninnukori varnam (agni natchatiram)...a line which goes 'vannapaavai mohanam'! The song is based on Mohanam - MD: IR! (Maniratnam)
  
  And the tamil version of the Malayalam song from Theva Raagam (Dir: Fazil, MD: Maragathamani) 'ya ya ya yadava unnai ariven'...it has a mention of the raagam 'yahtu kula khamboji'. Is that song based on that raagam by any chance?

  For the very reason Gemini Ganesan was called 'bilahari" Maarthandam Pillai, IR composed a song in that raga.."Nee ondru thaana sangeetham" from the movie Unnal Mudiyum Thambi..
  You can also add the "Klaivaaniye" song from Sindhu Bhairavi.. I would say Balachander had perhaps the best feel for good carnatic music and ragas amongst directorss and also had the say in choosing a tune..

  Can I also add that IR was one of the most prolific when it comes to use of raagas as per story and director's wish? Surprisingly the second spot might go to Maragathamani (IMHO!!)

  in the film Paadum ParavaigaL, a telegu film dubbed in tamizh there is a song that starts as Keeravaani... this song is set in the same raaga. The situation is that, the heroine(Bhanupriya) is a bird-watcher and is fond of recording birds' voices for a thesis of her. Keeravaani in sanskrit means sound of birds(info by KJY in an interview). So the choosing of raaga and the lyrics goes aptly with the situation. The MD is IR.

  1) Om Nama Shivaya (Salangai Oli) - It is said that Raga Hindolam is used to compose devotional songs in praise of Lord Shiva (This is just an "Aidheeham", or a popular practice).So the song fits in with the tradition well.
  
  2) Kalaivaaniye (Sindhu Bhairavi) - This song has no avarohanams. Meaning to say symbolically in the film that the life of JKB (SIvakumar) has nore more declines
  
  KB and IR were probably the best in bringing out such situations, IMHO.
  
  BTW, there is one piece in Raga "Gowri Manohari" by MSV. The song starts as "Gowri Manohari...". Can ne one name the film and significance of the song.

  ah! isaipriyan's BTW line triggered this point in my mind:
  how about the song adhisaya raagam aanandha raagam from Aboorva RaagangaL. It is a kind of raagamalika( i believe, i read it somewhere, so). The tail piece of this song is set in Bhairavi raaga symbolises the name of the lady(Sri Vidhya) who Kamal loves and wants to express the same to her thru a song. Ofcourse the lyrics also does the same in this song...at the end of this tailpiece the lyrics which was hitherto written in praise of raagas names the raaga, Bhairavi.
  
  If the song maraindhirundhu paarkum marmamenna from thillaana mohanaambaL is set in ShanmugaPriya then that is also an apt selection. Because the hero's name is Shanmugasundaram and he stealthy comes to watch heroine's dance performance that which heroine notices and sings this song. I have a doubt on the raaga, though i remember reading somewhere that this song is in shamugapriya. Pundits please clarify.
  
  also another doubtful inclusion from oru thalai raagam the song is idhu kuzhandhai paadum thaalaattu idhu iravu naera bhoopaLam i think in this song a stanza will come stating the name of the raaga mugaari raagam. if this claim is also correct then we have this as another instance of the purposeful usage of raaga.

  Kupps, `mugAri rAgam' is not in the `idhu kuzhandhai pAdum thAlAttu' but in another song of the same film:
  `kadavuL vAzhum koyililE karpoora dheepam, kaLai izhandha nErathilE mugAri rAgam'
  (BTW, I don't know whether the song is based on that rAgA)

  Another example...Naan adimai illa...song, oru jeeva thaan, I remember the mention of name sivaranjani on which it is based...not sure if it appears...been ages since I heard that song!

  Again, the song 'idhu kuzhandai paadum thalaattu' has the words Bhoopalam in it, but isnt that song in Kaapi? Even if its a very good composition, I seriously doubt if T Rajender had any knowledge about Kaapi raagam and composed it with specific intention.
  
  Also, there was a song which goes 'thodi raagam paadava melle paadu'...forgot which movie, who is MD and everything. Is it in Thodi? Who's the MD?

  Kupps, "Maraindhirundhu Paartha Marma Enna" is of course, Shamnuga Priya Ragam. Some other songs in this Raga are
  
  1) Kaadhal Kasakkudhayya (Aan Paavam)
  2) Thakita Thathimi (Salangai Oli)
  3) Ooru vittu ooru vandhu (Karakattakaran)
  4) Sollayo Vaai thirandhu (Moghamul)
  5) Tham Thana Tham Thana Thaalam varum (Pudhiya Vaarpugal)
  
  Shanmuga Priya was predominantly used only for devotional songs of Muruga in TFM. IMHO, credit goes to IR for using it in "Rowse" songs like 1) and 3) above.

  Is Snegidhane song by ARR in "Alai Paayudhe" based
  on Shanmugapriya? - I have always appreciated the variety of moods in Shanmugapriya created by IR. I'm one of those biased IR fans who listens to ARR with a very critical mind. But this song in Alai Paayudhe impressed me a lot and I think it is based on Shanugapriya. Please tell me if I'm right.

  this song is from sampoorna ramayanam..when ravana invokes the blessings of lord shiva in many raagas..a similar one is in thiruvilayadal ..oru naal pothuma..where BMK goes..isai keetu ezhunthodi varuvaaranro..and uses mohanam, kaanada and darbar... also there is a song called goerimanohariyai kanden..in the same raaaga ..its some old movie starring laksmi etc.!

  karthik..u re being too critical of TR'S knowledge of raagams etc..he has come up with some really good raaga based compositions ! kuzhandhai paadum thalattu is a very good example.i think it is in kaapi too! there are his other ones in pookkalai parikaadheergal and mythili ennai kaadhali etc..

  a small correction in the sampoorna ramayanam song..it is a kind of a musical question and answer session where the people in ravana's court ask him questions like..kalai nera raagam edhu etc..it is not a total invocation as i had mentioned earlier. a great composition and wonderfully rendered .
