Let us discuss the films BM has directed, touched your heart forever. Azhiyatha kolangal, Moonram pirai, Veedu, Neengal kaetavai, Marupadiyum, Sathileelavathi, Moodu pani and more..

I saw this Azhiyatha kolangal five years back, I still remember the effect it had on me.. No one in Tamil cinema had ever done such a beautiful film on such a subject although some of the scenes are too much.

  to me, his best was his first movie - kokila.
  
  a BM movie in black & white, this one had some special appeal. wonderful story telling and very good acting by kamal, shobha and an equally good performance by rojaramani. she had beautiful hair which was fully exploited by BM especially in the scene when she lights the lamp near kamal's bed. the best scene of the movie is the last scene of the movie when kamal meets shobha in her clinic.
  though the movie was in kannada it could be enjoyed by any non-kannada person too.
  
  the same story when remade in malayalam years later (YGM doing kamal's role) by BM himself did not have the same effect.

  The same movie was made in Hindi as Ek Aur Prem kahani-starring ramesh Arvind , Revathy (Roja ramani's role) and Heera (Shoba's role). Revathy gave a splendid performance.

  To me, Moonram pirai is the best movie I have ever seen. Kamal and Sridevi's acting, story telling, music all are at a superb level.

  Azhiyatha kolangal was by Salil Chowdury, I think.

  Vaathiyaar, u r right, AK was by Salil C who was also the MD for kokila.

  Add Olangal(Malayalam) to the list. IR is ofcourse the MD. It had the great song "Thumbi Vaa" sung by SJ. LAter this song appeared in Tamil as "Neer Veelchi" by SJ, "Santhathil" in Auto Shankar by SJ & IR, and "Sunday Ko" in Aur Ek Prem Kahani.

  Olangal also had other haunting numbers like 'vezhaambal thedum' and 'kulir aadunna maanathu'(wonderful song by KJY .SJ's humming in both the songs is a classic)

  Balumahendra did direct a few stright telugu films too.
  - Nireekshana (archana, bhanuchander),
  - Chakravyuham (suman, archana, gautami) are the ones I remember. MD is IR.

  Isai, thanks for the info, wow, BM did Olangal too? Thumbi Vaa was excellent, I prefer that to the tamil duet version.
  And yes Auto Sankar executed on May 27 1995 :)

  I find it quite interesting to see that a person born in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka, has been making movies in Malayalam, Kannada and Telogu. I had been thinking that BM only made tamil movies.
  
  Btw, that song from Olangal (Thumbiva..) sounds very much like an old tamil song from my childhood... that goes like, "sangaththil paadaatha uravu.." something. Anyone know what was the film?

  Marupadiyum was a hindi remake of a smitha patel starrer.
  And retai val kuruvi is a remake of a english film dont remember the name happen to catch it on some Cable tv.

  Sathileelavathy is a remake of "She Devil" which featured Rosanne and Meryl Streep. Julie Ganapthy is a remake of Stephen King's "Misery" which fetched the female lead Kathy Bates an Oscar.

  Hi! this will be a great news for all Maestro Ilaiyaraaja's fans and Music lovers! Maestro's most of the rare gems are going to be rereleased in the CD form[Few of them include even the BGM's].
  
  One of the Maestro's Diehard fan Mr Prashanth Rao from Bangalore is behind this commendable job![he has 700+ of maestro's collections in original].
  
  During the early days though there were lot's of gems from maestro, it didn't reach the wider audience since they were either in the form of Record plates or cassetes and affordability to those were limited to lesser audience, now that's not the case[Thanks to the technology].
  
  Now to reachout the wider audience and make it accessible to everyone he has taken the pain of contacting the companies holding the copyright of most of the albums which are either rare or unavailable and rereleasing the same in CD form after remastering it digitally.
  
  The first set is going to roll down soon.
  Since all releases are based on order quantity I request all Maestro's fans & Music lovers to support this noble effort by placing order for maestro's original works which will encourage and pave way to unearth most of his GEMS !

  You have forgotten to mention one aspect of BM films. BM has given us some of the best tamil/malayalam renderings of hollywood hits.

  MOODUPANI = PSYCHO
  OLANGAL (MALAYALAM) = KRAMER VS.KRAMER
  JULIE GANAPATHY = MISERY (a good rendering of the Stephen King novel)
  .
  though most of the frames and story telling technics of the original hollywood movies were retained by BM, the movies were enjoyable.
