DANCE RHYTHMS FROM AROUND THE WORLD INSPIRE CHOREOGRAPHY, VIOLIN PHENOMENON VANESSA-MAE'S DEBUT RECORDING ON SONY CLASSICAL CD TO BE RELEASED INTERNATIONALLY IN SEPTEMBER 2004, IN U.S. EARLY 2005
The Breakthrough Artist Who Defined Classical Crossover, Vanessa-Mae Creates New Pieces For Sony Classical Disc By Oscar Winner Vangelis, Riverdance's Bill Whelan, Bombay Dreams Composer A.R. Rahman, More
(New York, NY, May 13, 2004) - From the tribal dances of Africa to the silken grace of a European minuet, dance rhythms deliver the inspiration for Choreography, violin phenomenon Vanessa-Mae's first recording for the Sony Classical label. Backed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the stunning young violinist introduces new, dance-inspired tracks by composers as diverse as Oscar-winning Vangelis, Bill Whelan of Riverdance, Tolga Kashif (The Queen Symphony) and the Indian film composer A.R. Rahman (Bombay Dreams). Choreography will be released internationally in September 2004 & in the U.S. early 2005.
With the blockbuster release of her first album The Violin Player in 1995 and its worldwide sales of more than 3.5 million units, Vanessa-Mae pioneered the classical crossover sound and quickly emerged as the first real superstar in this now-crowded field. Her worldwide album sales now surpass 8 million, with more than 40 international ddffd awards, and - at a mere 25 years old - Vanessa-Mae is one of the most potent and enduring artists in the fusion of classical and pop music.
Vanessa-Mae's new Sony Classical recording is designed to emphasize the "cutting edge to her view of classical music and yet keep the appeal to the now huge crossover audiences around the world," the album's consultant Rob Dicins said. The recording was inspired by the rhythms and pulses of dance cultures, ranging from Argentinean tango and the seduction of the bolero, to the tribal dances of Africa, the complex and mystical beauty of Indian music and the allure of the belly dance. She has inspired some of today's most exciting composers to create new sounds with these traditional forms - and even with a classical piece (a Handel minuet). Vangelis, Bill Whelan and A.R. Rahman provide new tracks for the recording, as does the brilliant young European composer Walter Taieb (The Alchemist's Symphony).
Vanessa-Mae will open the Classical Brit Awards on May 26 at London's Royal Albert Hall (to be broadcast in the U.K. on May 30 on ITV1) with a live performance of the "Sabre Dance" track from Choreography. "Sabre Dance" is a new treatment of the instantly recognizable dance piece by Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian, created for Choreography by the young English composer Tolga Kashif. Kashif is best known for The Queen Symphony, a popular orchestral work based on the hit songs of the rock group Queen, and he has collaborated with David Bowie, Elton John and Bono.
The Singapore-born Vanessa-Mae had already embarked on a traditional classical career, with three classical albums under her belt by age 13, when the release of her first pop album in 1995 became one of the defining hits in classical/pop fusion. She has since collaborated with pop artists as diverse as Prince and Janet Jackson.
Born the birthday of classical violin legend Niccolò Paganini, Vanessa-Mae began playing the violin when she was five years old and, a mere five years later, dazzled an audience at Europe's Schleswig-Holstein Festival with a career-making performance as a classical virtuoso. She was recognized as one of the most exciting prodigies of her generation, concertizing with orchestras and touring the Far East in 1992 with the London Mozart Players, headlining its Mozart bicentennial concerts, as the youngest soloist ever to perform with the orchestra.
The release of The Violin Player in 1995 took Vanessa-Mae's career to a new level that won her millions of new fans even as classical critics complained. She continues to be a unique figure in music, with an extraordinary range of experience that has included the honor of being the first international artist invited to perform in the South African Township of Soweto, a performance at London's St. James's Palace commemorating the 250th anniversary of J.S. Bach's death, and the opening ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.
One of the most striking women on the musical stage today, Vanessa-Mae has been hailed as one of the "50 Most Beautiful People in the World" by People Magazine and one of the "World's Most Beautiful Women" by FHM. She created a sensation during Fashion Week in Paris at a Jean-Paul Gaultier show when she modeled a wedding dress on the runway, while giving an impromptu performance with her violin.
