Saravanan, i read somewhere that Sridhar used SJ for his soft songs in his early movies (this being one of them). Is that true?

It was a dull evening after 2 tough days of unsuccessful debugging. I was on my way back to home. I was mentally dumb due to the frustrating work and I was playing my own IR hits collection in walkman! Though it had Freq. equalizers & Mega Bass etc, I never tuned them properly and I always use them to get maximum volume out of it. But this particular time I had to tune them down as my walkman was running low on battery and I know that tuning off many features gives me more playing time.
At that time, the song 'dhEvanin kovil moodiya nEram' just started and I felt tht the song is reflecting my mood. And, the first interlude was about to start and I just pushed the treble down.
Oh my goodness. Where was this bass guitar hiding before? When did it join the flute? A marvellous transition with the church bell and with the fast progressing beats, I felt a fresh suppy of blood flooding my brains! It simply took away my senses and changed my mood entirely! And this song touched me/my soul/my feeling somehow!
Lovely lyrics and nice pace! In the second interlude that 'thandhana thandhana thana..'...Its very lively! Chitra's soul-full voice! Lovely orchestration! And it made me to realize the fact why IR fan finds it difficult to enjoy others music!
A guitarist finds his favorite string section!
A flutist finds his favorite haunting melody!
A violin lover enjoys many layers of his favorite!
And still there are more: chords, KB, rhythm, pace, soul, melody and important fact is its all mixed very well in a enjoyable way!

Chitra in her interview mentioned two songs as her prime favourites.
(1) Devann kovil
(2) yEdhedho eNNam
in that order. A note of thanx to Rex aruL who made it possible to listen to this wonderful song for the first time through his once active site. This is one song which proves beyond doubt who is the best singing talent currently in north and south combined. SO much feel and a crystal like clear voice which transcends even the petty aspects like the quality of song file. A better file will tell u how much bgm goes in the song. A beautiful bass guitar that follows dutifully this mesmeric christian tune (which has a hindu shloka type prelude..strange is indeed IR's orchestration) which compares immediately with the immortal 'kaadhal Oviyam paadum kaaviyam' and the starting choral harmony of 'maarugo maarugo maarugayi'. A song which makes a listner compulsively a fan of Chitra. A tone to cherish and a delivery to be admired. A soulfully rendered relatively simple tune, which is almost impossible to reproduce by mortals.

Forgot to add this:
The second interlude of this song is a little reminiscent of the first interlude of 'ennuLLe ennuLL' which is another song which has no fulsome superlative.

MS cudn't have described the song better!!!!...one of the best ever by KSC...the transition from the brisk prelude with IR's voice in different shrutis to the soulful pallavi has a mesmerising effect...the mood of the song oscillates between agony and joy when IR and KSc sing resp....the prelude and interlud eparts sung by IR makes me jump in joy and KSC's rendition brings tears into my eyes...thanx bb for making thois amazing song as SOTD:-)

bb- Thanx again. Among Chitra's unforgettable numbers. Aruvadai Naal-1986 came a year after KSC first made her appearance in tfm. It was a Sivaji Productions venture and his eldest son Ramkumar too had made a special appearance. The film had Prabhu, Pallavi and Rasi in the main roles. All songs were great- Ola kuruthole- SJ, Melatha mella thattu- MV,SJ, Chinna ponnu chinna ponnu-MV,SJ,VJ. Directed by Kumar, who later was more famous as Mr.Pallavi!

bb- Sorry- I noticed your question just now.
Yes, Sridhar was the first director who realised that SJ was no ordinary singer, and she featured in many of his films, notwithstanding the fact that SJ was by and large ignored in tfm in those years.
She sang in his second film as director -Meenda Sorgam-1960. The song was 'Singara thoppiley'-SJ-Jikki. MD-T Chalapathi Rao.
It is said that she sang the telugu version of 'Kalaiye en vaazhkayin' too, which PS sang in tamil. I don't know how far this is true.
In Then Nilavu-1961- the two songs that AMR made her sing were vastly different from each other- the slow, classical 'Kaalaiyum Neeye' and the fast 'Oh ho endhan baby'- SJ showed that she could sing both with perfect ease.
Even after Sridhar shifted to V-R, SJ featured in many of his films. Policekaran Magal and Sumaithaangi (both 1962) were wholly SJ shows (except for 'Poranthaalum aambalayaa'-LRE).
Nenjam Marapathillai-1963-had 'Azhagukkum malarukkum'-PBS-SJ. Vennira Aadai-1965- the film begins with PBS-SJ's 'Chithirame solladi'. Nenjirukkum Varai-1967 had the classic 'Ninaithaal pothum paaduven'. Avalukkendru Or Manam-1971 had SJ's 'Unnidathil Ennai koduthen' completely overshadowing PS's lovely 'Malar ethu en kanngal' and LRE's emotional 'Ellorum paarkka'. SJ's 'Deviyin Koyil paravai ithu' from the same film was another great song. Alaigal-1973 had SJ's 'Oomai Pennai'.
Thus this Sridhar-SJ collaboration continued (with some exceptions)right upto Sridhar's last film Thandhuvitten Ennai-1991.
bb- wish one of these days you'll consider featuring a song which I go beserk over- 'Kanavu ondru thondruthu'-SJ, from Sridhar's Oru Odai Nadhiyakirathu-1983. What a song! Class music by IR!

Thanks, Saravanan. that is good info! All the more interesting given that Sridhar's nenjam marappadhillai got PS a national award.
I don't think I have kanavu ondru song. let me see if I can find it.

bb,
i don't think there was a national award for "nenjam marappadhillai". fyi, Best female playback singer award was introduced by central govt only in 1969 (of course that went to PS for "naaLai indha veLai paarthu").

Saravanan,
I can't resist the temptation to send some trivia!
Sridhar's 'avaLukkenRu Or manam' and another film around the same time 'anbukku oru aNNan' faced the disapproval of Tamil grammar sticklers! According to them, the names should have been 'avaLukkenRu oru manam'and 'anbukku Or aNNan', rather 'anbukkOr aNNan'! Similar disputes were raised with Jayakanthan's story 'oru manithan, oru veedu ,oru ulagam'. It should have been 'oru manithan, oru veedu, Orulagam'!

I was listening to this song just yesterday and I was thinking about IR's vocal harmony skills seen at the prelude and KSC's pullarikka vaikkum voice. enna oru voice!! (gramatically correct, CV:-)

Saravanan,
Thalaivaa, SJ-a pughazhura vaakkula PSkku oru kuttu thaevayaa? No self-respecting PS fan would agree that SJ outshadows PS in any movie, any song, let alone the movie, "Avalukkendroru Manam". "Unnidathil Ennai Koduthaen" is in no way a match for "Malar edhu en kangal", nor is "Azhagukkum Malarukkum" even in the same stratosphere as "Nenjam Marappadhillai" by PS.
oru aadhangam avvalavudhaan. Otherwise, Saravanan avargalae, I truly appreciate your knowledge and love reading your informative posts. Vaazhga, ungal thondu valarga, innum neraya PS paattu kaelga.
