I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Saravanan,
For a short while, before 'muLLum malarum', Mahendran worked as part of the editorial team in Thuglak.
There was a minor controversy in 'bommai' about 'niththam niththam...', between IR, GA and Padma Subramaniam/ her 'manni' Shyamala. It is said that GA, (when he was Amar Singh!), had worked jointly on a research project on 'naattuppuRap paadalgaL' with Mrs Shyamala and they had even brought out an LP. 'niththam..'( or at least the beginning of it) is supposed to be an original 'naattuppuRap paadal' for which some credit should have been given to her. Padmaji kept arguing that though the songs belong to the faceless villagers, it requires the diligence of a Shyamala to dig it out! IR said (it was published in his own handwriting!) ' ivar ennathaan sonnaalum inthap paadalgaL makkaLukku sonthamaanavai. ivarukkO allathu 'manni' ShyamalavukkO alla!'. He struck it off and wrote 'ivarukkO allathu ivarathu aNNiyaarukkO alla!'

Borrowing from Vaali " UngaL Thiramayai paada en Thamizh mozhi poathathu" (English m poathathu!).MM write up brought back memeories of waiting at the theatre gate at 6.30 AM.
Rajini maruthani idum scene -Romba niraivana kaatchi.MM won the I prize in Kalki competition followed by KallukuL Eeram.I find the movie more closer to heart than the story. No doubt land mark movie and music.( JM did "Thayyalkaran" or something with Parthiban???)It was this IR we missed post 82.So refreshing and addicted to innovation!
On CV s "Manni controversy" - I had been to one of their programmes earlier and did listen to a similar song. But certainly the mood, music and singing was better in the movie!Let Manni take the credit but i will take the VJ-IR song!
Fadafat was another thinking actress in the lines of Laxmi.Sad death ...and that too for a oversized unattractive dumbo MG Sukumar!(Remember Kungumam Kadhai solgirathu which paired them?)
The undercurrent family/friendship understanding between Rajini-Shobha-Fadafat was a highlight brought well by JM.
But i feel JM was influenced by RM s "Aaj se pehele" from "Chitchor" for "Senthazham poovil" picturisation. That is another movie closer to heart anyways!
The Fall of Sridhar and fading of JM are the irrepairable loss to Tamil movies.
Kaatrnile varum geetham - This time I vote for the SJ s version - a rare occasion! This movie was remebered for IR on the positive side and ofcourse Muthuraman s Wig for the other side! a forgettable movie for everyone other than IR.
Hats off to your efforts pal!

JM's name will remain forever for giving probably the best Tamil film ever- Uthiri Pookal. Mullum Malarum is also a very good movie.JM has extracted rajni's most spontaneous performance to date. The climax still remains fresh.( Engineer saar ...enakku ungala pidikkalai...) Rajni_ fatafat made a good team (6lirunthu 60 varai for all the melodrama also saw them gel well)
apart from MM,UP & NK I feel all his other films deserved to be flops. Yes Including Johnny. The suhasini, shalini, Charu hassan movie was a disaster of epic proportions.azhagiya kanne I suppose. Baby shalini still torments me in my nightmares.Pootatha pootukkal remaina pootiya petagam till today.
But I forgive JM every time I watch Uthiri Pookal.
By the way Raman aandalum was also picturised in a peppy manner ( which was again repeated in Asayai kaathila toothu vittu)

Re. my previous post ethai ethayo solli etharkka arambithenno athaiye vittuvitten that is
Fatafat was simply outstanding in the sequence -isn't it their first night sequence. Bagyaraj had ripped it off with Banupriya rendering a "devane esuve" in Sundara gaandam(?) in a somewhat similar situation.
also you will find Balu Mahendra cross refering " azhagiya Kanne(UP) in Pillai Nilla ( Neengal kettavai).
JM had a dislike for lip sync so mostof his songs used to be background songs or parodies.

One can debate who's loss it is, IR or VJ or the listeners' and why it is so, and so on and on, but I'd rather be thankful for the wonderful songs that have come our way, memorable as examples of "cinematic" excellence. I am all for discernment, even with memory. And I know you subscribe (even if you could successfully make claims to the designation "generalist" :-))
Niththam Niththam is an appetising seduction. It is authentic, sensational, and simple. But done with a great sense of purpose, as good "cooking" ought to be. The chuckle factor, for me, personally, is the delicious irony in the fact that the singer glorifying the nuances of Meenkolambu and Uppukaruvadu is, in real life, as far away as you can get from fish!
Kaatrinile Varum Geetham was ghastly film (or should that be ghostly?) and but for the songs, and Kavitha's cleavage it would have not even lasted the two weeks it did (A friend of mine had the misfortune of buying the rights to this clunker, and it nearly blew away his whole life. Mariamman Thiruvizha came to the rescue a few years later.)
Vijaybhasker Films bettered rose up in the world of the macabre by casting Sripriya and Sivaji in "Vettrikku Oruvan" I accompanied my Gone with the Wind dist. friend to sit through this torture fest. Surprisingly, when we out and breathing, he looked rather pleased himself. What's so bloody funny? I asked. "This one makes KVG look like a misjudged masterpiece. I'd love to see the face of the guy who took this for the B and Cs!"
VJ does a good siren in this outing. This song differs from the other version significantly in the arrangement as well. Was Agayathil Thottil Katti by IR or MSV? I always think of these two together. VJ did another spooky-spook song for IR in Nooravadhu Naal - Urugudhey Idhayame Arugile Vaa Vaa. It did not get the airtime it deserved.
This instalment of yours is an auspicious gift to IR on his birthday. Is there a better way to praise than in a song?
Mani-
I don't recall the name of the film. Saravanan, do you?

Four tamizh films are the yardstick for me. I might even say that these films have not been bettered to this day:
Andha Naal
Aboorva Ragangal
Aval Appadiththan
Uthiri Pookkal
That's tamizh cinema in my books.

Naaz (digression continues)
Did you give Aval appadithan a second look. I was mighty impressed with it the first time round. probably I thought Iwas also becoming a sinthanai methai or some such thing . I had a jolna paai, kurtha at the time but no daadi & glasses. Now that I have a beard but still find no need for specs I found the movie more than a bit confused , verbose & pompous. It had its moments but I've changed my opinion.
Andha naal is a genre, cult classic but that is about all isn't it. a niche film.
aboorva raagangal is an improbable story told in an intersting way. But does ennudaya appa yaarukku mamanaro really make a good movie ( As Major himself says in adrunken stupor who is the bloody fellow. I loved the Dr Hari-Suri comedy though.at the root of good comedy lurks a deep tragedy.
That leaves with only uthiri Pookal at the top.
Honourable mentions are
Azhiyatha kolangal (my personal favourite. Ok what if it is summer of 42)
Kathalikka neramillai ( I am yet to tire of this accidental masterpiece. I think that this time Nagesh & balayya will irritate me but it has not happened so far)
Aalayamani (the high melodrama is more than offset by Sivaji's masterful performance of different shades of grey.
Ulagam sutrum vaalibhan ( what do i say a story which could be written in a train ticket -card type but with good songs make for pleasant viewing.
I like patches of Unmaigal & unarchigal but RC Sakthi was not able to maintain it for the entire length. Ditto for cheran's Porkaalam & Paandavar Bhoomi.
Thaneer Thaneer was KB's best ever film (post Nagesh) & achamillai achamillai was3/4ths good.
But by a long mile the winner for me is
Uthiri pookal.

Vengayam/Naaz Namba list parunga!
1.Andha NaaL
2.Kadhalikka Neramillai
3.Sumai thangi (Yesterday when at home for lunch this was going on in SUN TV- I needed a good drink in the evening)
4.Aalayam (thirumalai -pattu)
5.Sila Nerangalail Sila manithargal
6.Aayrathil oruvan (for the same reasons Vengayam quoted for USV)
7.Azhaiyatha Kolangal
8.Dhagam ( Muthuraman-Nadndhitha Bose)
9.Manamatha Leelai ( Surprised??)
10.Uthiri pookal
11.Mullum Malarum
12.Devar Magan
13.As you have pointed out, parts of many RC Sakthi/Bagayaraj/Mouli movies.
The number DOES NOT denote the order!
Personally I feel Aval Appadithan s was spoilt by Kamal s "OVER-UNDERSTANDING".Sri Priya i feel, marginally lacked the intelligence required for that character. But I remember the violent dialogue by Sivachandran "En Thangachi mathiri sir"
Naaz
Agaaythil is by MSV from Thunive thunai a Jai starrer directed by SPM.Actually the MSV overlap you can find in "Kumguma kolangal" from "annan oru koil".

Those films I mentioned were chosen with a bit of deliberation and for some reasons that might now be too obvious. Here's why I chose these:
Andha Naal: POV has never been so interestingly or innovatively used in tamizh film. Period.
Great editing, no songs, seat-edge suspense (without being gratuitous) and an unexpected conclusion. For it's time, this film was brave, sensible and used film as "craft" not just "entertainment."
Aboorva Ragangal: Bold (although derivative - remember 40 Carats?) for its handling of May-December relationships without apologies. Honest in evaluating - creatively, without the usual KB moralistic sledgehammer - male youth alienation, angst, confusion and machismo.
Agreed the whole puzzle bit was a bit of a fizzle.
But that not sum up the enitre exercise. Technically superb without being sensational, and thematically invigorating without being fantastic.
That's why it makes number 2.
Aval Appadiththan: The only film to eschew melodrama for maturity in addressing the everyday status of a middle-class tamil woman in her 30s.
If there is an essential feminist film in tamizh, this is it.
Uthiri Pookkal: A fine example of how an adaptation ought to be in its move from short-story to screen.
Aesthetically subtle, and scorching in its realism.
A poised and textually anchored rumination on simple, every day, human evil.
One jarring, "made-up" flower in this scattering: Madhumalini.
Lyrical, like a poem by Emily Dcckinson (post-censors here won't pass this surname.) Not just for its beauty, but also for its use of the camera as a powerful pen. How often does that happen?

naaz ,
Mmm read your thoughts butI don't agree especially about the feminist bit. kavitha ( AOT) is a better example of the feminist bit. The character had a streak of arrogance, self pity & headstrong qualities which can be seen in the tamil wonman in her 30s!
Aboorva Ragangal for all your explanations doesn't stir me. The best thing was its music & the dead heat between Kelviyin Naayagane & athisaya raagam. By the way Kaikotti sirippargal was the sample of what was to follow ... IR singing !!
