Can any HCIRF please enlighten this poor soul?
1.How many movies have run simply because of IRs rerecording?
2.Has he managed any recognition at the state, national,Asian, international levels for his BGM ?
3.Has he won any awards (say like Filmfare,Zee ,IIFA etc ) for his BGM?( i hear Adhesh Srivatsava won a Filmfare or Zee award for his BGM in "Border")
4.Who would you rate as the other good BGM scorers at the national ,international levels? (apart from the staple answer "Nobody")-[This is just to determine where he stands vis-a-vis "Them"]
5.Why is he not getting offers to score BGM for Hollywood movies when his credentials are extraordinary as per your judgement?
6.Are there any awards instituted by our govenments for BGM ...like the ones for special effects, editing? If they exist has he won anything? If it does not why don tyou guys make a representation to the government?(But if the Governement accepts your representation and gives the award to some other MDs .....)
7.Mention some scenes wherein without his BGM the scene would have fallen flat pulling down the whole movie.
8.Are there any movies by other MDs in which the BGM was ...say..Ok!?
I shall request all non-IR fans not to post in this thread.Lets listen!

Why do YOU want to start the thread then? Obviously you seem to be one of them???
It's a known fact that BGM as an art is hardly recognized in the mainstream media, especially in the North, where post the RDBurman, Lakshmikant-Pyarelal era, most MDs didn't bother to score BGM (its a worthless job for them) and hired amateur composers or out-of-work artists to do the work. So you have the Anu Maliks and Nadeem Shravans doing 10 movies a month with just the songs!
So, it's no wonder even the recently created filmfare, screen award category for BGM goes to people like Adesh Srivatsav.
It's only in the South that we see even the common man talking about, and enjoying the background score, and its only in the vernacular magazines that we see movie reviewers mentioning & recognizing Background Music (which often is referred to as 're-recording' for some reason)
I am glad ARR still continues with the TFM MDs tradition and scores BGMs himself in most of his films, as he knows it's an avenue for him to showcase his creativity. And I am pretty sure IR does it for his own satisfaction. He doesn't NEED to put in so much effort, but he WANTS to. Which is why many viewers of his Tamil and Telugu films, irrespective of whether or not they are his FANS, do appreciate his scores.
And THAT IS RECOGNITION for an artist.

One Answer to all of the above questions:
When you guys say that IR has no more market and his songs don't sell anymore, why do directors like BALA, VAMSY, PARTHIPAN, SANTHOSHI, BALU MAHENDRA, ADOOR GOPALAKRISHNAN, THANGAR PACHHAN and many, many more approach IR for music and state that It is only IR who could give life to their movies?

i guess OISG is deaf (else his brain should be dead). BGM is the best part in any movie (look at "the good the bad and the ugly" , "mouna raagam", "nayagan", "aboorva sagotharargal").... music can bring tears in ur eyes if you watch "kasi" , "udhiri pookkal". it is a very powerful medium to convey ideas.
there are many scenes where music alone talks - that is what bharathiraja told about IR's BGM in mudhal mariyathai. thats what Mahendran told about IR's music in Johny, mullum malarum....
so if u r deaf I am sorry. But telling that BGM is nothing, it is just ridiculuous.

I have read that many directors who saw the movie after IR has done the BGM just fell at his feet-his BGM had elevated the music so much.
ARR,MSV are capable of doing good BGM-but,ARR reserves this for only MR,shankar and few other top ones.similarly,MSV's bgm for MGR and sivaji movies were good.but second line heroes were given second grade BGM.
IR has been consistent-he gives BGM according to the movie-he does not give good bgm for a kamal movie and average bgm for ,say, kasthuri raaja movie-watch karisakkatu poove-what BGM!
just because MSV and ARR are not consistent(ARR many a movies does not do his bgms at all!-atleast MSV did his own BGM however good or terrible they were) dont declare that bgm is not at all important as an ARR fan did once or that the fact that IR is good in BGM is a myth-it is a fact. .
best eg of a completely unknown director getting a superb bgm from IR is -Bala of sedhu fame.In fact,he has mentioned that the movie was lying unnoticed when it was IR who encouraged the team that they had a sure hit on their hands.
I suppose you have read vikatan review from IR's?815 th movie ivan's bgm and rahman's ?70 th movie baba review. That will tell you who is more consistent .

OISG-you are just a frustrated MSV fan who is acting like an ARR fan.dont 'kulur kanjufy'(what is the english equivalent?)in IR fans vs ARR fans fight and act pious.

ARR and Backgroung music - it is an oxymoron. Only in the past 2-3 years his BGMs are of some value, otherwise it is pathetic (exception in Roja).

See the power of IR's BGM. This is from telugu Film ( may be digression ).
Recently in www.Niharonline.com, vamsy writes his experinces with Ilayaraja. One must read it and know the importance of Ilayaraja BGM for movies. Vamsy stated that the time first +ve print of Sitara (his movie name ) shown to K. Viswanath, SPB, Gummadi etc..., everybody discouraged Vamsy even the producer Yedida Nageswarao. Paled Vamsy went to Ilayaraja and asked him to complete the re-recording. After watching the entire movie Raja told vamsy that he has taken very good film which surely will get fame and name. After re-recording completed, Vamsy showed the same movie to every one only to receive big applause. Vamsy said it's all because of Ilayara background score. Same thing happened to all his movies including Maharshi...

OISG
That movie Sitara later on became a very big hit and Vamsy the director of the movie got fame and name in telugu Industry. Vamsy's movies were instant hits in telugu as long as IR did music. Once IR stopped giving music, his movies were flop and slowly Vamsi faded from Telugu Industry. Only his recent film after a gap of 7 years is going good.

Few links to IR's BGM's....

One IR Fan writes up at
http://vivekrk.8k.com/bmessage1.html
( OISG, This is digression but see what people think of IR, if you are not aware of IR and his work )
1. Can ARR compose a good background music like Raja's Nayakan, Agni Natchattiram, Mudal Mariyadai etc. 2. Can ARR compose a tune like Raja's Sindhubhairavi which is having all sort of human qualities, expressions 3. ARR is not a composer. He is just like a taylor smelling tunes from various sources and mix it up except a few. ARR is living on numeric game and huge media support. In the case of Raja he is very much in with his folks, Karnatic and Western. He went for western for very few songs where it is necessary. More over Raja is more indianised than ARR 4. During the peak Raja can compose for more than 25 films even more in a calendar year. But for ARR not even reaches 5 . A.R.Rehman is like a twister which destroys everything on its way, But Iilayaraja is like "THENDRAL" which lives long and gives happiness to everybody. Iilyaraja is a Fixed Deposit A.R.Rehman is a Current Account.

Raja did win a Kerala Government award for the BGM of Kaalapani. I think Kerala is probably the only state that has separate awards for BGM / songs.

I guess IR was upto the task when it was required. Example:
Rathiri Nerathil Ratchasa peigal from Anjali
(Maniratnam's Star Wars Inspiration)
Vegam Vegam Pogum Pogum Magic Magic from Anjali
(Maniratnam's E.T. Inspiration)
Then Pandi Cheemaiyile from Nayagan
(Maniratnam's Godfather Inspiration)
For all the movies MR copied the hollywood movies. But IR didn't do that. He came out with his own needless to say it was impressive.
