A.R. Rahman comes to the music industry's rescue!
FILMFARE.COM
Rahman has proved himself the saviour of the music industry time and
again, by never failing to rise to the occasion with scintillating
tracks just when there is a lull in the industry. And now,
after 'Bombay Dreams' the music director is back in the reckoning
with his music for the Vivek Oberoi-Rani Mukherjee
starrer 'Saathiya'. The title track is already a hot favourite among
youngsters and promises to scale even greater heights on the charts.
Considering that there has been a dearth of good music around, it's
about time too. Well, Mr Rahman, welcome back!

SAATHIYA
**** / ***** (Very Good)
-Jitesh Pillai, Sunday Times of India
Okay so Bollywood Dreams was a let down but A.R.Rahman more than makes up for it and scores a whammy with this one. Right off the back, let it be said, that this score is a rip-off from the music director's own score in Mani Ratnam's Alai Payuthey(Tamil). But guess what? Rahman outshines himself. Saathiya has enough vim and vigour despite the recycling.
Sonu Nigam's sinous voice sets the tune with the jujube-sweet title track Madham Madham. Gulzar's refulgent lyrics are burnished with Rahman's orchestral flourishes in this track. Sample this: Teri baali hil gayi, kabhi shaam khil gayi hai, teri baalon ki panahon mein, teri kaali kaali ankhen, koi ujli baat utre, garm garm ujla dhuaan, narm narm ujla dhuaan.
Adnan Sami's vocal dexterity is evident in Udi Udi. Like a gushing cascading waterfall, the tune rises and falls with every riff. The robustness of Chhalka chhalka, sung by Richa Sharma, Mahalaxmi and Co. harks back to the tantalising mood of Rukmani rukmani (Roja) with lines like Chhalka chhalka re kaisi ka paani, chhalka chhalka re o aankh na maani.
The melancholic Mera yaar sung by Rahman, has the same yearning and tang that infused Ae Ajnabi(Dil Se..). One is left wodnering if the arrangement is a tad too high-falutin for our pop purri movies. Sadhana Sargam's displays teh same dulcet quality of Chanda Re (sapnay) in Chupke Se. Gulzar's silken prose is wrapped in a nimble tone.
Unfortunately Rahman is not able to restyle the original Alai Payuthey title track in the Hindi version. Instead we have to make do with a watered-down Naina Milaike sung by Sadhana Sargam and Madhushree. But this is a minor blemish in an otherwise impeccable album.
And as a final sign-off, rapping and quivering like only she can, ASha Bhonsle croons into the mike with Chori pe chori. After R.D.Burman, Rahman is perhaps the only composer in the new millenium to let the songstress reinvent herself with every song.
Reggae meets Raga in Kay kay and Shaan mangalyam (sic-???), which is undoubtedly one of the best scores this year and arguably one of Rahman's finest ever. Its alll in the genetic pool. Dad Muzaffar Ali came up with musical gems like Gaman, Umrao Jaan, and Anjuman. Now director son Shaad Ali hits the bull's-eye with Saathiya. Play it again, Rahman... and again.

HINDU's REWIEW
---------------
THE FILM is a remake of Mani Ratnam's Alaipayuthe. For those who have heard the Tamil original or the Telugu Sakhi, listening to this album will create a sense of déjà vu as most of the tunes are familiar. But for those who have not heard the original version, it is worth checking out. A.R. Rahman gives a fine blend with a `contemporary' feel to Gulzar lyrics. The songs to listen to are the ones on Side A. Saathiya (sung by Sonu Nigam that is appearing on television), Aye udi udi (the nageena number sung in a new light by Adnan Sami) and Chup ke (the snehitane/snehituda number which somehow does not sound as impressive as the Tamil original.) Sadhana Sargam's voice seems too soft for Rani Mukherjee, the main protagonist.
Side B has foot-tapping numbers for youngsters like O Humdum Suniyo re (like an `Indipop' with a `classical' beat) and Mangalyam (which has the marriage mantra Mangalyam tantuna dena mama jeevanahetunam... interspersed with Suniyo re... )
A.R. Rahman croons the sufi sounding Mera Yaar Mila de. Naina Milaike sounds "classical" and like one of the numbers of yesteryears. Chori Chori by the indomitable Asha Bhonsle and Karthik has a `funky' sound.

Music Review of 'Saathiya'
By: Narendra Kusnur
November 19,2002
------------------------------------------------------
Once again, music director A R Rahman is on a roll. Just when we were
complaining that his music in The Legend Of Bhagat Singh had an
unwanted south Indian flavour, and that his Bombay Dreams didn't
match the hype, he comes up with a delightful soundtrack in Saathiya.
This is a recycled version of Rahman's own soundtrack of Mani
Ratnam's Alai Payuthey (the Tamil film of which Saathiya is a
remake). Along with Ismail Darbar's work in Devdas and M M Kreem's
Sur, Saathiya is clearly one of the best soundtracks released so far
this year.
Throughout, the orchestrations are charming, as Rahman uses both
contemporary and traditional folk elements smoothly.
Equally important, the music is adorned by archetypal Gulzar lines
like "Saathiya madham madham teri geeli hasee, sunke hamne saari pee
lee hasee" and "Chupke se lag ja gale, raat ki chaadar taley, chaand
ki bhi aahat na ho, baadal ke peeche chale".
The opening track Saathiya has been marvellously orchestrated, with
Yanni-meets-Jethro Tull interludes. It's been sung peppily by Sonu
Nigam, though one wonders why he's trying to sound like Shankar
Mahadevan.
The highlights of Chhalka Chhalka are the strong use of rhythm, and
the vocal coordination between Richa Sharma, Mahalakshmi, Vaishali
and Shoma. Then, Adnan Sami sounds simply fabulous on the vibrant Aye
Udi Udi Udi. Mangalyam (KK, Shaan, Kunal, Sreenivas) is short but
sweet.
The beautifully written and romance-filled Chupke Se has been sung
expressively by Sadhana Sargam, with crisp back-up by Murtuza and
Qadir.
Sadhana is also in good form on Naina Milaike, a duet with
Madhushree. Even though it seems loosely inspired by Amir Khusro's
Chaap Tilak, it impresses with its semi-classical touch and Sultan
Khan's moving sarangi.
One finds some inspiration on other tracks too. Chori Pe Chori is
reminiscent of the Brahmachari number Chakke Mein Chakka, but Asha
Bhosle has sung it stylishly, and Blazee chips in with a smart rap.
Mera Yaar Mila De (by Rahman and one unnamed person) has Sufiana and
north Indian folk elements.
The only weak link is the overcrowded and directionless O Humdum
Suniyo Re (KK, Shaan, Kunal, Pravin Mani).
But on the whole, what's really welcome is the way Rahman has further
evolved in terms of sound. Instead of blindly repeating himself —
barring some of those never-changing rhythms — he comes up with music
that's rich and refreshing.
