sO :) Thankfully, it's very rare that I feel like giving ‘pieces of my mind’. I always have a soft corner for V Kumar- I feel he never got the recognition he so richly deserved. I have shared many thoughts with writer Vamanan, (who too has many times been a recipient of ‘pieces of my mind’! The perfect gentleman that he is, he never keeps it in mind -I think he quoted my thoughts on VK in his article on VK)
Naaz: Reg. Chattakkaari Mohan (or Mohan Sharma, as he calls himself these days)- he has become an important functionary in Film Producres Union or something like that. He did a small role in Enippadigal too. Leave alone acting, he tried singing too- remember his ‘haunting’ version of ‘Sogame vaazhkkayin ragama’ from Thavam? Or that lovely duet with VJ that he totally made a mess of ‘Keezhe vaanam meley bhoomi’?
Rathin- Other examples of ‘eyebrow-joined Muslim female characters’- Rajasulochana in Bharatha Vilas and KRV in that Tansen song (Isaikkettal puvi) in Thavappudhalavan.
Sk- I don’t feel so generous with you to liberally hand out a piece of my mind! Anyway, here’s a bit on Mittai Mummy, which I’m ‘cut-pasting’ from VJ chronology: (Madhukkinnam yendhungal is a great VJ solo from the film)
Madhukkinnam yendhungal - Mittai Mummy
Music:V.Kumar
This film was initially titled "Deivam thandha veedu". I have seen the record in this name. It starred Jaishankar and K.R.Vijaya, and was directed by lyricist Avinashi Mani, who had earlier directed "Aayirathil Oruthi" and "Janaki sabatham". The mesmerising TMS-PS duet from this film-"Thirukkoyil thedi rathi devi vandhaal" will live on forever, ensuring a place of pride for V.Kumar the "Mellisai Maamani" in the annals of tfm. I also seem to remember a solo by PS, peddling mittai.
I cannot imagine that this seductive, club dance number would have featured KRV. However, I have a vague memory of having seen CID Sakunthala in a cabaret costume on the cover of the record. So, in all probability, this song must have featured her.
Rowdy Rakamma had music by S-G btw.

`mayakkum malai' was a good choice for sotd. A m raja is the ideal voice for that song. He sounds really molodious.
Can you post `Kanavu kanden' from sivagangai seemai. I know the joy version is available online. But i would really like to hear the pathos version. I have heard someone praise the tune.

'andhi mazhai' one of my all time favourite - nice to see it in SOTD today. excellent writeup too. what a wonderful day.
the song starts with a chorus bit (sung by blind children) in the movie. is that bit available somewhere in the net ?

Friends,
In an interview on Sun TV on Tamil New Year’s day 1998, VM said:
“Many people keep asking me about ‘andhi mazhai pozhigiRathu! ovvoru thuLiyilum un mugam therigiRathu….. kurudanukku eppadiyyaa kaadhaliyin mugam theriyum??!! I tell them to watch the film. Kamal is only a violin player, as part of the orchestra in the song, which itself is sung by SPB, both on and off screen!”

on: Thu Mar 27 01:34:33 EST 2003
Geeth, that chorus you talked about is wonderful to hear by itself. Actually when you hear it while watching the movie it sounds even better. I think Madhavi watches Kamal sing with the blind children froma distance and then the chorus stops and merges with the starting beats of "Andhi Mazhai pozhiguradhu", if I remember right. I have not seen that bit anywhere on the net.

One more tidbit:
Kamal made IR compose 27 different tunes for this song and then after listening to all of them one by one, he said the first tune sounded the best and picked it!
I dont remember where I read or heard this, possibly from an IR interview on Sun TV long time back.

I had the opportunity of meeting Mohan (Sharma) when i was in practice. He owns(prob "owned" by now) the Ragamalika sarees in TNagar. With handsome looks and soft voice clad in Veshti & jibba he took me by surprise starting off the conversation.
Vidhi Yaarai vittadhu!Actually he should be now interviewed in "Kadhyalla Nijam"!

VM did lot of "sappaikattu" for "Indiaran thottathu Mundiriye" but eventually ended up on the losing side.
Thanimayile,Ilamayile - he patted himself for the word play. When asked about "Verumayile" he took a retreat. His stock words "Thee","Dhegam","Dhagam","MuL" were well received those days.Few can add to what Lakshmi Narayan has written, truly an immortal song.
bb,
Can you locate the discussion on Raag Ramani which is the "Ga" grihabedam of Vasantha and someone convincingly argued that the song indeed was in Ramani.

I am very fond of TMS and only now I fond the site.
The great moment of happiness stalled for a while as I could not play and listen to the songs.
I do not know the reason please rescue me.

bb- Enchanting- and as I'm listening to it- its really drizzling here :))
Wonderful write-up(s)! Btw, SPB's lines are Indiran thottathu mundariye --manamathan naattukku mandiriyey. Its SJ's lines which go 'Ragasiya raathiri puththagame' (and how whisperingly she sings it!)And to my limited knowledge of mythology, Lord Indira was also known for his romantic ways- after all his Durbar was filled with the likes of Ramba, Oorvasi and Menaka!

Great song... A classic in everyone's books.. The picturisation made the song more better...I guess the chorus starts with 'Mazhigalin thuligalil vizhundhadhu melliya kaatru'(kindly bear with me if my lyrics are wrong)...

bb-
A truly evocative number, and the morning shower here (alas, not andhi) only adds to the overall effect. The write-ups were also illuminating. Thanks for this IR classic. Talking of IR, he did a fine job with such "Frolic in the Rainshower" numbers, and the other ones that come to mind are the Chitra solos from Mouna Ragam and Punnagai Mannan. TR also had a similar evocative composition in Kilinjalgal "Azhaginil Vilaindhadhu Mazhaiyinil Nanaivadhu, Manadhukku Sugam Tharudho..Ammmamo" SPB oozing lust and desire :-)
Saravanan -
Yes, I do remember the Mohan Sharma number in Thavam (MD: Pugazhendhi?), which was a remake of the Hindi Bhavna. The title track was also a straight "tamizhakkam" of the Hindi "Thu Kahan Aa Gayee Zindagi..." I believe, Thavam was also produced by Mohan/Lakshmi.

Naaz, that was SJ's solo 'Oho Megam vandadho' and the Chitra's you are referring is from IThirudathey (Athaadi ammaadi). Oh my!!! such wonderful songs!!!

Yes, Naaz- Thavam was indeed a remake of the Shabana-Marc Zuber starrer Bhavna. (Yes, the music was credited to TKP, though the songs were straight lifts from the Hindi tunes)
I guess you are referring to 'Vaan megam poopoovaai thoovum' from Punnagai Mannan.

Re andhi mazhai pozhigiRadhu:
Mux, I think this is one of those pieces which demonstrate the precision/discipline in composition followed by Raja sir along with his understanding of the orchestra, and holds potential for further development.
He presents one theme in the prelude as a choral humming, which gets repeated later in the charaNams. The first interlude starts with a violin piece which seems to hold another theme with the potential to become a solid string section piece with some wind and percussion thrown in. TVG's soulful humming is another component with its own rhythm and melody which can be explored further by the orchestra. iLayaraja varies the TVG theme from the first interlude and intertwines it with the repeat of the prelude theme in both the charaNams thEnil vaNdu & dhEgam yAvum (cyclical form where themes from different sections are repeated in one section). Finally, the second interlude holds a violin piece which starts development but stops due to time constraints. And, between each theme within a section and between sections there are appropriate "transition pieces" (violin or flute).
In summary, it is the smart compositional structure, the independent melodic/rhythmic themes in the different sections, and most importantly the independent, varied moods in each of these themes all together make me feel there is more to this piece and leaves me with a feeling of incompleteness when each theme truncates so suddenly (to my ears). Of course I'm no music expert but am just sharing my thoughts here [helpful disclaimer :)].

One of my classmates in BITS, will start weeping when u play andhi mazhai pozhigiradhu. The reason , he himself doesn't know. Whenever I play the song ,he'll request me to stop it.
Any such experiences ??
Sorry for digressing a bit, guys.

well shankar,
i fully understand your pal weeping at andhi mazhai pozhigiradhu. i myself find it difficult to hold back that "yaekkam", that heavy feeling that wells up in the stomach and proceeds all over the body and ends in tears whenever i hear many of raja's golden numbers or some old numbers.
in my case, the songs are:
-koil mani oasai thannai
-aanandha raagam
-o vasantha raaja (the start)
-ennulle ennulle
-malaikkoyil vaasalil
-senthoorapppoove (interludes)
-paruvame
-poongadhave (start, man it kills me always)
i also find it difficult to hold back the tears, become unable to sing properly (forget speaking) whenever i listen to "ennuyirththozhi keLoru saethi" from karnan. PS's voice is jadoo.
SPB once said in a TV programme that he used to cycle to college every morning. on the way, religiously, he would stop at a tea-shop which would play "deewana hua baadal", a mohammed rafi number from kashmir ki kali. SPB says that he would just stand there, tears rolling out of his eyes. was it happines, joy, extreme delight, or just the purity of the music, he could not say.
well, tell ur BITS friend he is not alone.
