Lagaan has been unanimously chosen as India's entry for Oscars Foreign Film Category for 2002. It beat Monsoon Weddings and Asoka. Though this is not the first ARR movie to be chosen, with Jeans selected in 98, this is definitely a more credible choice.
Will this mark a new beginning or open up newer horizons for ARR? As ALW's Bombay Dreams is more a Broadway production, this may introduce ARR to Hollywood in a big way. Or will Lagaan just find itself piled in the garbage can, following the very first round of selections, as all past Indian entries have?

True, R. Even erin brockovich wasn't too bad. But how about American Beauty? That was a joke!
Sometimes political undertones determine who the Oscar awards go out to. Do u think the current crisis may actually influence the results? I guess that would depend also on the other entries. Like any movies on the Afghan refugees plight may for instance, stand better chances. But do u reckon such an influence would work for/against Lagaan?

Even without Lagaan I'm sure ARR is going places. Take for instance the Volvic Mineral water advt starring Zinedine Zidane. It had Bombay Theme music played in the background!
Now for those hopeless skeptics who feel that it was one more loop/piece that ARR flicked from some foreign source and thats the only way it could've found it way there...sorry! Bombay theme music has found it way in many international compilations like Talvin Singh's album Anokha, to name one. Its indeed a very popular piece by ARR and not many of us know how popular it is globally.
To see and listen to the Volvic advt, you can download the realvideo file from here...its 1.5 MB.

WHYNOT,
ASSUMING THAT LAGAAN DOES NOT GET NOTICED IN OSCAR, WHAT WILL BE YOUR RESPONSE?
* OSCAR JURY DID NOT RECOGNIZE LAGAAN'S BEAUTY
* OSCAR AWRADS ARE TOTALLY BIASED AND SENSELESS.
THEY NEVER RECOGNIZE TALENT FROM INDIA
* SO WHAT. OSCAR AWARDS ARE NOT EVERYTHING1
EVERY KAMAL FAN REJOICED WHEN 'NAYAKAN' WAS SENT FOR OSCAR. I REMEMBER 'HEY RAM' WAS ALSO SENT.
DON'T TAKE SUCH THINGS SERIOUSLY,FRIEND.

Cheenu, if a statement is not worthy of comment, then why do u comment that it is not worthy of comment? Isn't that a comment itself?
If Lagaan doesn't make it to the nomination list (that itself will be a big success), my response is: It was a good attempt, better luck next time.
And so far, 7 Kamal movies have been sent as India's entry for Oscars, just for the record.
- From: WhyNot (@ 203.24.100.131) on: Wed Nov 7 03:25:23 EST 2001
"Moondraam Pirai", "Saagara Sangamam", "Saagar", "Nayagan", "Devar Magan" and "Kurudhi Punal", "Indian" and "Hey Ram"...That's 8 Kamal movies nominated for Oscars. Btw, it's Kamal's bday today.

As someone mentioned earlier in the forum , the length of Lagaan cud be a very decisive factor . The "orange tone "photography isnt easily to be dismissed or derided .international films use it too...have u forgotten Traffic (and more recently "the mexican" ) it cud be quite useful to highlight the village theme .
I think the pattern with Oscars has been honouring something like these..
1. A big film. may be a historical , a costume drama...
really grand in scale and sweep like the titanic, Gladiator, Benhur, gandhi etc
2. Smallies.. poetic stuff with great visual appeal and / or simple themes with great direction - films from france ,england etc (life is beautiful cud probably be the entry in this kind )
3. Cultural showcases like the last emperor , crouching tiger....etc
or films with some thing new in terms of what is offered traffic, goodwill hunting etc( personally i really dunno what was so extraordinary about the script of the film )...
Political undertones are indeed very prevalent in determining which ones go far and which dont..and these times it will be really interesting to see what happens to films like lagaan ..btw, what do u guys think of the american movies that came out this year..other than hannibal ( arguably ) is any other film the oscar league..?
Lagaan is after all an honest effort to entertain with some good technique going with it unlike the many frivolous movies that get to the Oscars ..we will all be delighted if it goes to the nomination stage atleast ...because or not because of ARR , wont we ?
(u were right Why not..American beauty was indeed a joke..!!)

R,
"other than hannibal ( arguably ) is any other film the oscar league"
If Hannibal is in terms of Oscar league, then Oscar league looks pretty bad this year.I think there are atleast a number of films better than that.BTW,does people outside US know that there's a movie called "Mulholland Dr" and there is a director called David Lynch?:)
- From: WhyNot (@ 203.24.100.137) on: Thu Nov 8 00:05:01 EST 2001
Fliflo, wat u said about Gandhi is true. The fact tat Gandhi himself was played by a caucasian makes quite abit of difference. However, usually I felt tat anti-English wasn't always equivalent to anti-US. But now, wit US and UK joining arms and being best of friends, anti-English may also be perceived as anti-US.
Karthik, these Volvic ads u r talking about, where r these shown?
R, tat was a beautiful summary of Oscar patterns. But I can't quite figure if Lagaan would fall in the 'smallies' category or cultural showcases category.
Trend, I have heard of Mulholland Dr and David Lynch down here in Australia. And they will also be showing Monsoon Wedding in the art cinemas here from December. Hope to catch it. It's not normal for mainstream cinemas to show any Indian movies here in Aust, and most Indian movies are shown at private screenings. But I guess Monsoon Wedding is different from normal Indian films.

>>It has a female English Character who assists and help poor Indian villagers<<
Does tat remind anyone of The King And I?
- From: WhyNot (@ 203.24.100.137) on: Thu Nov 8 00:26:31 EST 2001
Just to add, Monsoon Wedding is in English isn't it? Do u reckon that the fact Lagaan is in Hindi may give it the 'foreign-language' edge over say, an English foreign film like Monsoon Wedding or will it work against it?
But if Lagaan makes it to the nomination list, the music would play a role in its subsequent sucess, and will surely be noticed, especially considering the musical-styled nature of the film.
