'Beauty is not at face value but it depends on how a person behaves with other people and shows affection to all living things. These are the traits which show a person's beauty', forms the theme of AVM's Peralagan. This is AVM's 166th movie in their 59th year of commencement. For the first time, the lead cast Surya and Jyothika are playing a dual role. Surya plays a naughty hunchback Chinna and the handsome college student Karthik. Surya as Chinna with buck teeth is a complete comedy track which children will enjoy. He has taken great effort and a months training to enact the role perfectly. Chinna's role required a three hour makeup session where the makeup kit worth Rs. 5 lakh was imported from USA exclusively for this purpose. The make up is done by Bhujji Babu. Jyotika has a lot of scope to act as Shenbagam and the lovable college student Priya. Vivek comes as Kuzhanthai, a marriage broker. He uses an expensive red Contessa car for advertising his business. Vivek promises to keep the audience in splits. A new technique has been handled in the fight sequence between Chinna and the villain Bobby and subsequently between Karthik and Bobby. Thalaivasal Vijay, Manorama, Kalai Rani, Manika Vinayagam, Mano Bala, T.P. Gagendran and Muthukaalai are among others cast in the movie. Shooting is taking place for more than 25 days in Kerala among the natural environs of Thodupuzha River, Kollappara Bridge and Kodaiyathur. Expensive sets have been erected at these locations. A market set with a STD booth has been erected in Kodaiyathur.

Dorai....the only thing Kamal did to differentiate that character from the other was to get the teeth jutting out (which Sivaji had already done in some of his early movies...well for that matter, he has not left anything for others!)...he looked the same in all other aspects...even the body language didn't look all that different. But...Surya...has completely changed himself...I couldn't recognise him in the first place...and it was not all plastic like in the movie 'Indian'. It looks very natural and he has changed from head to toe. He has done well in body language lately (e.g. Kakka Kakka & Pithamagan)...and I am sure he would have done well here as well!
True....the times have changed and there is more modern technology available these days...but you should give the credit when and where it's due!!!
I can't wait for the film!

Huh...I saw Peralagan (damn, what a spelling! thamizhukku vandha kodumai!) first day. Nothing great about the movie!!
Surya and Jyothika have acted well. Vivek's comedy is brilliant. Other than that, there is nuthing much to talk about in Peralagan!
The first half is pathetic. They just introduce the characters in the first half. I was just sitting, sitting and sitting thinking about when I could go out and grab a popcorn and Pepsi! They just managed to sustain the interest in the movie with something unexpected just before the interval.
The second half was very good. Fast and gripping. Unexpected and something new. Just when I was thinking that the movie would do well, it ended! It was too abrupt, atleast for my liking. So, I wasn't satisfied with the movie overall.
The basic idea which the director wanted to convey is that beauty lies in the heart and not in physical appearance. Though he seems to have conveyed that, it was pretty obvious as to what would happen in the end. If the director was serious about this message, then I feel he shouldn't have made some jokes about Surya's appearance in the first half. There were many incidents in which Vivek made fun of Surya and I don't get the point.
The story is almost entirely about Chinna and the other characters don't have much scope.
I liked the "Ambuli Mama" song alone and the BGM, for some strange reason, reminded me of Agni Natchathiram. I still don't know why! :-D Edho brahmai-a ennavo...vidunga!
Overall, I did not like the film. It might just do decently for Surya,Jyothika and Vivek.

C~P...I saw the movie last night. Surya was brilliant....it was a great performance from him. Chinna's histrionics and the other guy's intensity were complete contrast. Jo was fabulous and screen chemistry between the two was excellent...something I didn't see after the Prabu/Kushboo pair. Vivek and Surya's comedy was excellent too. It was not the usual masala stuff and had a bit of unusualness about it (of course, within the boundaries of the commercial needs!) The second half was gripping. What else do you need.....I was amazed by the intensity of Surya's performance.....mind you he is not acting under Maniratnam or Bala. That is the hallmark of a good actor!
I think ...with all the very positive reviews flowing in with lots of kudos for Surya's performance....this will be a hit....and will take Surya to the next level up. If Chennaiyil Oru Malaikalam turns out to be successful...then Vikram & Surya (followed by Vijay & Madhavan) will take the leading positions in tamil cinema!
Overall...it was a 'neat' and 'decent' film!
PS. I just saw Arul on video (I missed it on theatres as I was away)...and I thought it was a good entertainer. Nothing different...but entertaining neverthless...it was fast and furious. Vikram's her image is being established well with every movie.....but i am sure he wouldn'tt go the Rajini way...he is too good an actor to lose to the commercial cinema!) In fact, because i didn't expect much after the average reviews on the web, I exceeded my expectations. I have a feeling it will do good business. What do you think?

Kanna,
I never took any credit away from Surya. Your opinion is based on the fact that Surya has given a good perfomance and that is not something that I denied.
But as a film, what is good about it? One half of the film was ok and the other half was pathetic. There was literally no progress.

C~P stop your nonsense reviews....Perazhagan is one movie that after such long time shown what tamil movies should be like. It is an excellent movie with the right combinations of commercial items. The comedy was fantastic keeping the whole theater laughing throughout.
Above all the BGM was truly amazing. The music that accompanies Jo hugging Chinna.....cant describe in words. Guys look out for it. The title score starts with the same piece. YSR has done IR proud this time......
All should watch this...and I believe it will be another major hit for AVM. They have a nick for picking the right movie at the right time and gain success..remember..Murattukaalai, Munthaanai Muducchu and Minsaara Kanavu...

CM....C~P has been one of the very few people who talk some sense and do it in a decent way in this forum. While I have been reading stuff for a long time ...I decided to join in with my views ...mainly due to people like C~P...who I think respects other's views as well.
So...please cool it off. Even I was surprised with C~P's views on Peralagan...and i am trying to convince him by posting other reviews etc. For example...I couldn't even sit through half of Virumanadi ...and thought it might flop big time. But...it did average business and saved kamal's face. But...obviousely ..ther are people out there who thought that it was a decent film.
So...people have their own views...let's respect them..and keep our debate constructive!
