I have this feeling that there was a marked change (drop ?) in Ilaiyaraja's music sometime in early 1987. And it has not attained that magic ever since. Comments ...

i think IR attained his peak after 1987 and has continued to stay there well above others.

these are movies, songs that i could access immediately, without much researching. any more info? welcome. there are numerous songs that i have left out thanks to my memory!!
Now, Vishwanath, kindly look into all these movies, try to recollect the stars, banners, directors etc., probably you may not do so well! But, you should be able to recollect and rejoice with one thingITS Maestro IlayarAjA's music
Yes, there was a marked change in Maestro IlayarAjA's music after 1987.
The change that brought us more music, great music, incomparable in the history of tfm!!

I totally agree with the list of movies listed above. That IR has lost its touch is all a part of an organized campaign against IR. Just listen to Alamarathu Kiliye from Annan a very recent movie. It alone demonstrates the uniqueness and genius of his composition. Also count the number of movies listed above since the nineties. How may other MDs have given such great music for so many songs even in the nineties?
Also, we need to add to the list above the non-movie albums like HTNI, NBW and India 24 Hr, all came out after 87.
If people don't want to listen to IR, just go listen to whoever or whatever you like. But just stop this campaign of false statements and innuendos against him.

Viswa: You have to explain your stand more clearly. Lot of IR/ARR bashing has been going on in this forum.. so IR fans automatically assume that this is an attemp at IR bashing - vide BS's comments. First establish your IR devotion.. and then explain what you meant by this statement. From our earlier discussion I know that you do not intend IR bashing. :-)

Ravi :
Thanks for the caution. I shall be more clear from now on about what I intend to say ...
Gopal :
Thanks to you too. I get the idea now...
BS and other friends :
First of all, I wish to make it very clear that I am an ARDENT FAN of Ilaiyaraja (have been one since 1978) and do not intend to criticize his work in any way. In fact, I am one of those who will only be too happy to see him rise to pedestals of fame in the years to come. So, kindly do not take this discussion as a means to spread unkind stuff about IR. Ravi knows only too well about my admiration for IR.
The point I am trying to make here is the following :
IR's music continues to be light years ahead of the other MDs of today. (A recent testimony to this is his masterpiece in the Malayalam film "Guru"). So my comparison of IR's music post 87 is not with those of other MDs (the others are nowhere in the picture actually !) but with that of himself before 87.
There, I feel, has been a difference in his orchestration sometime around the "Enga Ooru Paattukkaran" period. To pin-point the era, between "Kadhal Parisu" and "Per Sollum Pillai", between "Maaveeran" and "Velaikkaran", between "Poo Vizhi Vaasalile" and "Aalappirandhavan". In the movies like "Kadhal Parisu", "Maaveeran", etc., there was a liberal use of the bass guitar in the songs (e.g. "Oru Kiliyin.." from Poo Vizhi...) accompanied by a "gaNeer" percussion effect. This effect was not there in movies like "Per Sollum...", "Velaikkaran", etc. (Of course, there is a lovely number in Velaikkaran "Va va va..") and subsequent movies. Songs from "Enga Ooru.." had less of the bass and gaNeer effect, and more of the flute/tabla combo. (Earlier, even the rural folk-based songs had the bass/gaNeer touch, e,g, "Aayiram Thamarai Mottukkale", "Poongatru Thirumbuma", "Kuyile kuyile", etc)
Another aspect of this period is the entry of Mano as a singer in a major portion of the songs.
There was less of SPB (no SPB for a while), and more of Mano.
Another important turning point of his career around this time was that he did less/no films for the "usual" directors (eg. Bharathiraja, Bhagyaraj, Rajasekar, etc.), which brought people like Chandra Bose into the limelight for a while.
(That all these people returned to him later is another matter, of course).
All these events that occurred around early 1987. That is the change that i am trying to point out here. So, just give a bit of thought to the music pattern before this period and subsequently, and let me know what you feel...
Looking forward to more opinions on this...

vishwA, (hope you don't mind),
you mentioned change (drop?) in IR's music. If you feel there is a drop, it's a
matter of taste and any amount discussion will be only useless (and stupid).
But if you want to discuss about change in his style, read my previous
posting. And again, even here it is extremely difficult to discuss objectively
(we would have to do a statistical analysis of how much of what chromaticisms were
used before and after 1987; are you ready for this? maybe anurAdhA shrIrAm
who intended to do a ph.d. on IR's music will be of great help here:-)) ).
Maybe my argument is irrelevant, but that's what I believe.
take it easy Urvashi.
