Does anyone know if the song "vaanaththil paduththu chirikkum velli nilaa" was sung by VJ? I can't quite place the singer. Haven't heard the song in decades. What movie is it from?

There was an interview with VJ in K-tv - in nootrukku nooru nigalchi yesterday and last thursday. She said she got Tansen award for Bol re pappihara and sang that song also. (vasant desai with rishikesh mukherjee).
She was introduced in tamil by SV subbiah in the film "thaayum seiyum" which was unreleased and that song was " ponmaayamaana ethirkaalam". Next, she sang in SG's music in 'veetukku vantha marumagal'. (she did n't tell that song) Then only, she sang in MSV's malligai song. She spoke abt KVM, MSV, SG, Salil chowdhary ( first film with him, swapnam) and kavignar kannadasan, vairamuthu, vaali, ku.maa. balasubramaniyam, maruthakaasi etc. (but not even mentioned abt IR) ( she mentioned once abt chandrabose also). She sang kesariya song from marwadi. She mentioned abt Jodhpur Maharaja in that interview. indru tamil pattil nadakkum tamil kolai patriyum sonnargal. uchcharippu kolai seivatharkku namakku entha athikaramum kidaiyathu endrum sonnargal. She sang a few lines from ezhu swarangalukkul, naanae naana, orae naal, megamae megame, yaarathu sollammal, aayiram aandugal from adukku malli.

I heard Vani Jairam and her husband want to establish some kind of training school to train talented amateurs in the various styles of music (in Chennai, I think). Anybody has any information about this school?

Any info on the newest albums/films for which Vani Jairam has lent her voice??? (apart from Neela of course).
Does anybody have an idea about her bhajan "ek to main ek murali giridhan" ? Its set to Raag Puriya Dhanashree (my guess). (Is this Raag similar to PandhuvaraLi??)

How many songs did VJ sing in Sri Raghavendhra?
YVS Mani: Regarding VJ not mentioning IR in her interview....I wonder, if IR has mentioned VJ in any of his interviews...? Does he mention anybody else besides Mozart or Beethoven in his journalistic chats/memoirs? I am sincerely curious.

GR - Nejamma, I am serious about finding an article/essay/interview where he mentions (or takes pride in working with) any singer/lyricist. I usually find IR's interviews (the ones I have read) to be rather self-centred and they are usually about how he is a "self-taught" western classical musician, how he dreams of "mozart" - and such anecdotes. I am sure there must be an "appraisal" interview somewhere, where he evaluates SPB PS SJ VJ UR Mano Chitra...? Therinjaa sollungo GR, please. I would appreciate a link, if there is one. End digression.

YVSMANI - in many interviews VJ has mentioned and praised IR, this might have been an exception. And then she has worked much more (in the quantitative sense of course) with other MDs like MSV and SG, than with IR. Then its natural that she mentions about those MDs more. After all in an interview, u ARE expected to talk about the work which you yourself have done. In contrast to this, IR has never spoken too much about his singers in the ones that I have read atleast.
Yes, I just visited the Raajanagahm site and saw this snippet, in which IR says:
"Never in the history of Indian film music, a score so grand, ...been composed!" --Ilayaraaja (on the background score of the movie Hey! Ram)
( http://www.raajangahm.com/articles.html - now click on SNIPPETS and go through all of them)
Now I myself am completely in awe of this phenomenal genius called Ilayaraja, but don't you think this statement is a bit too much? I quite liked the BGM of Hey Raam (in fact I suppose that is the only good part of that whole thing which they call a movie - this line is IMHO). ( As an aside, in what way is the BGM of Dastak, Mughal-e-Azam or Pakeezah LESS APPEALING than that of Hey Raam?? )

yvs mani - did VJ mention Vijayabhaskar? Some of her best film music work was for him. That omission seems a bit glaring. He even re-called her from her film singing seclusion for Neela. VB mentions VJ's grasp and range in many of his interviews/chats.

Naaz: IR praised KD in a KD ninaivu malar published in the early 80s. The book is in the univ of texas, austin library where I came across it. He mentions the last 3 songs KD worked on (with him?): raajaa raani jackie vaazhvil enna baakki, kanne kalaimaane (the last song before KD left for Chicago) and one more - possibly raamanin mohanam.

That's good to know, kik. Thanks. KD has written a perceptive profile on VJ in his memoir: Sandhiththaen Sindhiththaen. He mentions walking into a VJ recording (MSV working on a KD verse) at a studio and being rooted with awe during the take. It is a good piece, if you can get your hands on the book.

Hi o -
Kannaadi Amma Un Idhayam is from Paadha Poojai. A fine duet by PS and VJ.
OISG - VJ has sung in hindi after Dheerga Sumangali -
Meera (RaviShankar) Solva Sawan (Jaidev) Haisiyat & Wafaadar (Bhappi Lahiri).

A good digression (not entirely, as VJ has sung for Ravi Shankar and he has great regard for her as an artiste. Another MD who seeks her out for his compositions).
Third Grammy for Pandit'ji. Eat your hearts and tamburas out...if you are from the "rival" camps! :-)

Naaz, Unnmaiyileye neengka ketathu kashtamaana kelvi. enaku athuku unnmaiyileye pathil theriyaathu. Forget about the singers! He had not spoken about about his seniors on the industry. Whenever MSV speaks, he praises all his seniors. I donno why is this respecting mentality is missing at present TFM. Now we have MDs who make statements like "IR is not a great MD".

Naaz - has Ravi Shankar worked with Vani after Meera, except of course the Bharatiyam song? I has spotted one album mentioing them together on the net, but after that they have supposedly corrected the MDs name to Jwala Prashad.

Pt Jwala Prasad did the score for VJ's Bhajan Amrit album. VJ recently met Ravishankar at Chennai Music Academy where his daughter Anoshka was presenting a sitar recital. RS has not done any other music/film album in India after he finished the soundtrack for Gandhi. His Ghanshyam was an opera/dance drama commissoned by an organisation in London,UK. Bharatiyam, as far as I can tell, is the last offering by the RS-VJ duo. I am sure, however, that if he plans an "indian" album which involves "vocals" he would solicit the talent of VJ. He has a great regard for her singing skills.

GR - the issue of respect is an interesting one. Artistic respect/regard in the film industry/music was based - for the last half of the previous century - on training, talent, seniority and commitment (to excellence). But for the past two decades, merit has been replaced by money and marketing/pr. As a result, nobody is interested in the artistic calibre or longevity of a new talent. It is about today's novelty, not capability or dedication for/in art. Respect is something that is like a monument built over a period of time - with care and thought and inspiration. It has an aspect of awe attached to it - inherently. The awe is amplified by the track-record of excellence over years. But today it is all about the "current" rage. It is not an age of dedication, for sure.
Do today's singers/MDs have any notion or regard for seniority or music excellence down the ages? That doesn't seen to be the case (to me.)
IR's is a peculiar psychosis. He seldom speaks with admiration about anybody (but himself). And when he does so, it is always about the WCM maestros or some other (great but dead) people. What's most amusing is that he is fond of accolades himself, and does not demur or defer the praise that comes his way. Certainly, he should know that other artistes also like a bit of acknowledgement from their peers and industry comrades?
VJ is IRs senior (by tenure in the film industry). He had worked with Kumar Gandharava, Jitendra Abisheki, Vasant Desai, Naushad, Jaidev, RD Burman, OP Nayyar, Ghulam Muhammad, Salil Chaudhuri, MSV, Vijayabhaskar, Devarajan, Ramesh Naidu, KVM,...all before IR composed his film tune for a tamil film. She has also given her best to every IR composition (as have others) and has constantly risen to his most daunting scores/ideas.
But IR is a happy to have accolades come his way. Compliments from him (or even appreciation) towards his peers/seniors are few and very, very far between.
