T. M. Soundararajan, as everyone would readily acknowledge, is TFM-kku kidaiththa oru pokkisham. It is indeed surprising that there has been no discussions, primarily, on him. This thread is a spin-off of Aravind's comments in Matching Voices, where he said that M'sia Vasu's voice is nasal. TMS's voice is also nasal, but he has carved a name for himself in TFM. I intend this topic to discuss various aspects of TMS. Let me begin with one and then other contributors can continue.

When I am talking about this song I will add one
more comment. Eventhough Kannadhasan was much
closer, as a friend, to MSV than KVM, he usually
wrote remarkably better lyrics for KVM's songs (such as the above)
than for MSV's songs. Your opinion on this?

TMS sang 'ezhudhadha paadal ondru' from Thaen Sindhudhae vaanam' for Kamal before singing 'vadivaelan manasu'.

Naan oru rasiyilla raja(oru thalai ragam0 for Shankar. For a long time TMS refused to sing this song in light music programmes.

Thanks! I did say "Oaraayiram Paarvaiyiley" was by TMS for Ashokan but somehow misquoted "Iravum Pagalum" for "Vallavanukku Vallavan"
Also, TMS sang "Paaradi Kanney Konjam, Paithiyamaanathu Nenjam" for Ahokan with Sirgazhi singing for Manohar in Vallavanukku Vallavan, right?

Another one by TMS is for M.R.Radha in "Kumutham"

It is 'oru mullai poovithaz' sung by TMS, PS and some kuzanthai paadaki. You can see the original TMS in the lines ' athi kaalaiyil aathavan azaippu, athil aayiram malargaLin thudippu'. Beautiful.

I know that Cho song - used to be a favorite of mine in my childhood. But all I remember are some words now:

"Ottiyaanam Edhukkadi ?", "Bhaaki ? Edhu Bhakki? Ellathaiyumdhaan Pudingikittengale". I think Manorama was the co-singer and the movie is possible "Mr.Sampath". Unfortunately, I hv never seen even a cassette of this movie!

Pa Pa Pa Paatthu Thikkudhadi is definitely by TMS. I heard this song in a video song collection 6-7 months back and remember commenting on how well TMS has modulated his voice. He has also sung these lines in Moondrezhutthu for Thengai in the song "Iravil Vandha Kuruvigala". The words are "Musafir Jaana Yeh Muthu Muthu Mynah"

Has he never sung for SVRangaRao, Chandrababu, Thangavelu ?

You're right about the Cho song. The first line is:
alankaaram pOthumadi. The movie Mr.Sampath
also has two more good songs:

As far as I know, TMS hasn't sung for SV RangaRao,
ChandraBabu and Thanga Velu.

Ravy - TMS believed that his downfall was caused by singing the Naan oru raasi illa raajaa song, hence his decision not to sing the song in public.

Sathiya Keerthi - I think Thaai meethu saththiyam was MDed by Shankar Ganesh. You are indeed a mini-TFM encycopaedia. Kanchana yengey?
Did TMS sing for MN Nambiar in Mirudanga Chakravarthy?

RV- I think the title of the song is Nagaiyei kalattadi....

Correction:

MR Radha doesnt sing in Mama Mama Mama. He just watches some gypsies singing that song. I think the actor singing that song is either Kuladheivam Rajagopal or Kallapart Natarajan.

One more Asokan song : "Veedu Varai Uravu" in Padha Kanikkai.

Has he ever given voice to TR Ramachandran ? I remember a song in Manamagan Thevai where Sivaji and TRR serenade Bhanumathi. I dont know whether TMS gives voice to TRR there but a possibility ?

There is another song in Bale Pandiya "Neeye Unakku Endrum Nigaranavan" sung by both Sivaji and MR Radha. Maybe TMS gives voice to MR Radha in that one. Also, in Kumudham, MRR sings a song. Another maybe.

Bhaskar:

My theory to explain why Kannadhasan wrote the
best lyrics for KVM is as follows. In the case
of MSV, his method of composing was usually by way
of discussion involving the lyricist. Many many times,
MSV even used to strongly object to certain lines
suggested by the lyricist. In this mode of operation,
the lyricist was not totally free to operate.
Although MSV usually followed the Lyrics first,
tune next policy, on several occasions he went
against this policy; and, on these occasions the
lyricist had even less freedom to operate.

As opposed to this, KVM strictly followed the
Lyrics first, tune next policy. Not just
that, the lyricist was given complete freedom first
to pen down the lyrics that he felt was best for
the situation in the movie. Given the lyrics, KVM
then went on to make the tune etc. This complete
freedom that Kannadhasan got while working with
KVM, was, IMO, the reason why he wrote remarkable
lyrics for KVM's songs.

'poova thalaiva' *ing Gemini,Rajsree,Venniradai nirmala and jaishankar.Nice comedy film by KBalachander.

Bhaskar Saradha is a lovely film(though i would have liked it more if it had an different ending)
It was a very sensitive theme and was handled very well by KSG. A movie worth watching :))

This is regarding Maduraiyil paRandha meen kodiyai.
The song was indeed picturized (Gemini describing
Rajashree). But it was censored because the C.committee
felt it was indecent to compare various items
of Thamizh culture with the parts of a female body
(or, was the objection because it was Rajashree?).
But you can see this song quite routinely on
SUN TV. (DMK fellows banned it in those days
but now the DMK sponsored SUN is happily showing
it!) Kanchana, the video print you have was
probably made from a old copy of the film in
which the song was deleted for the above reason.

I would like to nominate 'Sumaithangi' as one of the must-see-thuyaram movies. Sridhar is at his best and proving again that you don't need any tragic events (like death etc) to make the audiences heart heavy. A family oriented melodrama laced with excellent songs (1. endhan paruvaththin kelvikku, 2.Manidhan enbavan, 3. mayakkama kalakkama, 4. mambazhaththu vaNdu) and
some good, subdued acting by Gemini and others (in fact Gemini pipped Alayamani Sivaji for the state award that year).

First of all, according to Navarathiri, the Navarasams are: Even for navarasam, I hv to go to a movie. ;-)

Somehow looking back, I can categorize TMS songs into

Note that this doesnt fall under any "rasam"

RV - A very elaborate analysis on your part. I need time to put my thoughts into writing. You have suggested an excellent topic i.e. TMS in a classical vein, as the next topic. I didn't feel like writing in this thread for reasons I am not
able to identify. But now I am going to slightly take the discussion
in a different direction. In one of my TMS collection, there is
this arpdhamAna song. It is in the movie nIdhi (haven't heard
of it before) musiced by MSV, written by kaNNadhAsan. The
song may be categorized as paridhAbam. The way TMS sings is beyond
any compare. A simple but a powerful song with a funny humming
