hi friends,
Time and again we come across songs that have many raagas interlinked to each other. here is an effort to get those songs in a single place and discuss any commonalities between them. i shall kick off by giving 2 raga maligai"s ezhu swarangalukul (abhoorva ragangal) and
oru naal poruma (thiruvilayaidal)
here we go!

Rajaraman & Badri:
Thanks for the input. So a Raagamaalikai is not
as tight as I thought it is supposed to be. Yes,
in all the songs listed here, transitions are noticeable.
However, the transitions in a song such as 'oru
naaL pOdhumaa' are much much smoother than what you
see in 'maasilaa nilavE'.
AppuRam enna, ennOda own masaalaa RM oNNai create

different songs and sing them in their respective
tunes, together, with a continuity...

aval oru menagai in sivaranjani was a good RM by SPB (the song was a tamil remake of the original) so no credit for SG but credit goes to them for not tampering with the original in the pretext of putting their stamp

Geetha: Do you think 'En Veetu thotathil poo ellam' is based on Chenjurutti. To me it sounds more like SankarabaraNam. Esp. at the end of CharaNam.
Oru Raja raniyidam from Sivandha MaN. This may not be carnatic based but the tune keeps changing for every stanza.

Ravy: 'En Veetu' 'starts in Senjurutti, doesn't the Pallavi sound like 'Nadhavidhu'? It then changes to Hamsadwani and then Kalyani, I believe. I guess the Sankarabarnam sound will occur, also the Kuranji sound.

Geetha,
It sounds like "naadhavindu" but the notes are all in sankarabaranam. So I too think it's not chenjurutti.

Good example Mahesh. The MD is SVV. There is a song sung by TMS and Seergazhi in "Agathiyar", "Vendriduven naadhathaal" which has 16 raagas. Kunnakkudi Vaidyanathan was the MD.
"Kannan mananilaye thangame thangam" is raagamaligai. I think the Pallavi is set to Abheri and so is the first stanza. The second stanza resembles VJ's "Bole re papi hara", is it "Miyan ki Malhar" or something ?

Hi, I am a songwriter. Recently, as I composed a song, which will have english lyrics, a word kept coming to me, which feels to me to possibly be a name. ... "Onnai" (pronounced
On-A) ??? I did a search today and your website came up. ?? Have you ever heard of this or a similar term, spelled same or differently, but with this pronunciation?

As I remember, "Kanna varuvaya" is in Gowrimanohari, I can't recall anything but the first line..... Maybe Srikanth or MS will know of any changes to the Raga.
In "Enna Samayalo" the names of the Ragams are part of the lyrics, e.g. Adiye Mohana - i.e. for the Mohanam part; Kal...Aaani, Kalyani....
Of the new songs, Enge enadhu kavidhai is a nice one, starting in Sindhubairavhi, going onto to swaras in Sarasangi and then onto to Lathangi, ending and changing the intensity of the melancholy mood in Keeravani.

Velai sir,
Anyways, it is probably the cutest song ive heard. Especially 2nd charanam in vasantha - Appa varum neram...Sa dha ma ga thaamadhamaa - touch is excellent !! and at several other places too.. I wonder how the lyricist co-ordinated with IR on this one. My guess is IR must have written the lyrics himself.

IR was the lyricist.

To my knowledge, it is in Gowri manohari through out. No other raaga.

You are right. The lyricist is raja himself.
The original of this song appears in the unreleased movie maNippoor mAmiyAr.

In Enna Samayalo, the luricist,as it was IR himself has used what is technically known as "SWARAKSHARAM". BMK is quite an expert in this technique, with his composition in Thodi, Nee Ma Ni Ni...... This is where the lyrics match the swaras sung, the classic example as Hari gave, Sa Dha Ma Ga Tha Ma Dha Ma (i.e. the notes sung are Dha Ma Dha Ma).

One more famous ragamaligai song which I remembered (may be "Pookkaari"-TMS):
"Naan paadidum kavithaiyin santham andha paavaiyin paattukku sondham",
"valampuri changenak kazhuthu, aval valaikkaram vaazhaiyin kuruthu.... Varum thaga thagavena ezhil kozhithu" etc.,

parts?

SK,
I am no expert on ragas. As far as I know, the following ragas are there in that song:
Nee enakke thaaram enrirukka (Kedharam)
Unnai en vasanthaavena naan ketka (Vasantha)
En nenjinil konjidu ranjaniye (Ranjani)
I am told the pallavi " Naan paadidum kavithaiyin ....." is in Kaapi. And I think some more ragas are also there.

The song nee oru raga has more ragas mentioned(only mentioned!)
Naan Vaa ena azahikayil ezhun THODI vanthu Thazhuvidum DEVA MANOHARI.
AARABHI manamum Thevayillai
The last line of NeeEnake has "Entha Nayagan thedidum NAYAGI ye"

Cinama Virumbi,
You are confusing 2 songs. The lines and ragams you mention are part of the song 'Nee Oru Raga maligai.. (sung by SPB, Film Pen Onru Kanden).
This is a wonderful song, each line mentioning a ragam name and set in same raga,( ofcourse not all the lines), Base ragam used in Kaapi
'Naan kavithayil...' from Samayal karan is a pur Kaapi ragam.
Any way, both are beautiful compositions from MSV.
When we talk of Ragamaligai, we cant forget "Thendralil Aadum Koonthalai...' (VJ + KJY) from MMSP (MGR movie). This starts with Suddha saveri, goes to Abheri, Charukesi. MSV/ KVM has composed many ragamaligai songs in Bhakti films.

For those discussing on "Enna Samayalo..." I would recommend another similar song, thematically written in the same way: "Samyal Padame.." in Manipoor Mamiyaar that came around 1980. Lots of similarities between these two songs..It was also penned by IR..!

Jeyram,
Thanks for the clarification! While posting, even I had this mild doubt!
Three other songs I remember are:
1. The song in Devar's 'Thunaivan' where Sowcar and AVM Rajan visit all the temples carrying their disabled child!
2.Thirumal Perumaikku from 'Thirumal Perumai'
3.Kandu Konden- from Devar's 'Thiruvarul'

Geetha, I think there is Kaanadaa also, in the song "Sivagaami Aada vantha Nataraajan Ennaseivaar " song of Paatum Bharathamum and definitely a kalappadam like "En veetu thottathil" cannot qualify a raagamaalika.

"Mazhaikaalamum panikkaalamum" from film Savithri can also be considered as a raagamaaligai. The song , though predominantly on Hamsadhwani, has one charanam with starting lines
"kaar kaalam paarthu kani maamarathil kalyaanam seidha kiligal", deviating to another raaga(sounds like Bhimplaas)
