TFM rasigargale,

I am starting this thread to give everyone of you a chance to list the most favourite movie in which you like all the songs and justify giving reasons for each song why you like all the songs in the movie. Each rasigar can mention only one movie (I know it is tough to make a choice :)). If there is a contention that already someone has listed your favourite movie you liked please try to make another selection.

There is a little suyanalam in this topic because I want to make sure I have all the best collection with me.

I liked "Avatharam" the most. I liked all the songs as the picturisation of the songs is beautiful, they are well suited to the movie and the BG music is out of the world. IR has added more splendor and color to "Avatharam" with his very novel and impressive music in this movie. You are sure to agree with me if you see this movie.

The songs in the movie are:
chandirarum sooriyaram pethathodu puthiranum naan dhanE - very colorful song - Nasser dreams of becoming a star in the film industry and dances in a drama theater. Very normal song but the settings and costumes chosen are very artistic.
oru gundamani kulungudhadi kannamma kadhula kadhula - Nasser performs therukoothu to impress his master. Very nicely portrayed!
thendral vandhu theendum bodhu - the song depicts the budding love between Nasser and Revathi in the most novel way. The song is full of colors and modern art - a gem of a song!
aritharatha poosikolla aasai - Nasser requests Revathi to recommend him to her father to join the therukoothu group and she refuses to do it. The dialogue between the two is narrated beautifully in this song.
thondu thottu indru varai - this song shows the state of mind of a tormented man after the death of her beloved. Very forceful and very impressive.

And to add, I liked the story, presentation and acting by everyone in that movie. An unnoticed gem in the recent tamil film industry.

4) namma Oru singkAri - Tremendous jooy solo by SPB
5) What a waiting - The last guitar piece makes you forgive SPB's telugufied English.

8) Anantha thANdavamO - A novel sounding solo by LRE

Aravind - I am simply bowled over with your choice. There are dozens of movies where IR has simply excelled, but you have chosen a MSV movie and even then, IMO which is no match for most of IR's songs. I hasten to add I respect your opinion and views. How can one forget ARR's Thiruda Thiruda. (and to some extent Pudhiya Mugam). TT's songs were great (ARR's best - the splendid use of chorus in putham pudhu bhoomi vendum). Also Duet, Roja.

Although I started listening to TFM seriously only after 1975, the
songs of the 60's made deep imprint on my mind, in particular those
by MSV/TKR and then those by MSV in his early years alone. I can very
easily list about 60-70 movies (this includes some by KVM and all 3 of AMR's)
in that period which had a good number (say 4 or more) of excellent
songs each. To select a single movie is difficult; but, if there is
no choice I would single out Paalum Pazhamum as the choice
that appeals to me the most.

Director Bheem Singh enna mandhiram pOttaarO theriyalai! The MDs,
MSV/TKR, the lyricist Kannadhasan, and the singers, TMS & PS got
together and gave inspired music; paalum pazhamum mattumallaamal
isai endra thEnaiyum aLLi theLiththuvittaargaL. The movie is a musical
treat!

If you are looking for songs with a detailed orchestration,
you will not find them in PP. Instead, you will find simply
melodious and haunting tunes in which simple orchestration
blends beautifully with the mood of the songs. If you want complicated
poetic lyrics, you will not find any in PP. But you will find simple
(yet, powerful) and imaginative lines that immediately appeal to your
heart. If you casually listen with your ears the songs of PP will
not make any impact. But if you focus your heart on the songs and
listen carefully you will find it a wealthy experience; there is little
doubt about that!

The 9 songs of PP bring out, in a definitive and representative way,
all the major feelings that one goes through in adulthood such as
ethirpaaraadha magizhchchi, aanandham, aazhndha kaadhal, sOgam,
philosophical outlook, Ekkam, ninaivugaLai maRakkamudiyaamal varum
thuyaram, mana vEdhanai etc. Let me elaborate by going into each song
one by one (appadiyE padaththin kadhaiyaiyum konjam sollik koNdE).

1. Ezhai peNNoruththiyai (avaL thandhai iRandha pin) maNakka mun varugiRaar

nandri. I saw Aalaya MaNi in the weekend (Thanks to NOV for telling me that
this movie was being shown on Malaysian TV) and I am compelled to write another
long posting. Although the movie has excellent songs such as thookkam un
kaNgaLai thazhuvattumE, ponnai virumbum boomiyilE, and kallellaam maaNikka
kallaagumaa, I just want to write about the song in the movie, satti
suttadhadaa. The song is usually classified as one depicting sadness (see
TMS sOha geedhangaL.. thread, but I want to argue that it is just the
opposite.

There are good (divine) and bad (animal) qualities in-born in every human being.
In some people, one or more of the bad qualities such as fear, jealousy, anger,
etc., are present in an extreme level, causing deep mental agony. The hero of the
movie is one such person; the problem in him is extreme jealousy. If he loves
a certain thing and if someone else sets eye on it, he loses control and becomes
furious. When he was a small boy, he even caused the death of a dear friend who set
his eyes on a doll that the hero loved. The hero, who otherwise is a person of
good character, has been having this deep feeling of guilt that he (the deep
jealousy in him) was the cause of his dear friend's death. Hence he
has been consciously making an effort to control jealousy whenever it
arises, and is also doing so many good deeds to others as atonement. BUT, the fact
was that jealousy was always rooted inside him, just waiting for a chance to explode.

Manidhan, poRaamai pOndru manadhil irukkum mirugaththai iraNdu muRaiyil deal paNNalaam.
He can just accept that as a part of him and act whatever that animal instinct asks him
to do. If this had been the case, the animal solution would be the most natural
result.

But, nammudaya naayagan was not so; he had always considered jealousy as a
disease and had been fighting and resisting it all his life. Adhanaal, naNbanidamirundhu
uNmai therindha pin avan, chE chE, ennai indha poRaamai ennum mirugam engkE koNdu
sendruvuttadhu paar endru sindhiththu adhanpadi manidhanaaga seyalpattiruppaan.
(avargaLudaya vaazhkkaiyai patri avan enna mudivu seygiRaan enbadhu ingku mukkiyamalla.
So I will not go into that.) I call this as the human solution. The key thing
to note here is that jealousy is still present in him; indha muRai adhu viswaroopam
eduththa pOthu adhai avan adakkivittaan, avvaLavudhaan; pinnar avan vaazhvil adhu vERu
oru kaaraNaththiRkkaaga paayndhu veLi vara vaayppu irukku innum.

uNmai therindha andha nEraththil avanukku, mElE solliya reNdu solutions-um nadakkavillai.
AppuRam ennadhaan nadandhadhu? naNbanidamirundhu uNmai therindhadhum avan udanE ninaiththaan
(Oh how stupid I have been):

budhdhi kettadhadaa nenjai thottadhadaa
naalum nadandhu mudindha pinnaal nalladhu kettadhu therindhadhadaa

avan vaazhnaaL muzhuvadhum poRaamai-yai resist seydhu manadhilum seyalilum nallavatraiyE

PoRaamai ennum mirugam viswaroopam eduththu nindra pOdhu, uNmai therindhu, enna

says, you can even say that time was not involved here; it happened instantaneously)
avanuL vaLarndhu vandha dheivam innum periya roopam eduththu poRaamai endra mirugaththai
azhiththu saambalaakkiyadhu! He was free of jealousy for ever! This is what they
call as God's Grace or as a spiritual experience, something that cannot
be planned and executed via the mind process! I call this as the divine solution.
As JK says, when there is a snake right in front of you ready to bite and you truly
realize how deadly it is, what do you do? You immediately take action to get rid of it!
This is what happened to him. IdhaRkku Kavinjar azhagaana uvamai kodukkiRaar paadalil.
Soodaana oru sattiyai (compare this with the jealousy-animal which had taken a huge form)
kaiyil pattadhum (he realizes the stupidity of following jealousy), by reflex action you drop
it (he becomes free of jealousy instantaneously):

Kavinjar follows this with beautiful lines that describe, in a nutshell, what happened
in his mind from birth till now:

paadhi manadhil dheivam irundhu paarththu koNdadhadaa
meedhi manadhil mirugam irundhu aatti vaiththadhadaa
aatti vaiththa mirugam indru adangi vittadhadaa
amaidhi dheivam muzhu manadhil kOyil koNdadhadaa

Gnannam is used to denote the the ultimate understanding of the Aathman
that comes from a profound spiritual experience. Naayaganukku vandhadhu spiritual
experience (yaanai) enbadhu uNmai; aanaal adhu vandhadhu avanuL irukkum poRaamai
(eRumbu) endra mana nOyai kolla; avanukku muzhu Gnanaththai koduppadhaRkkaaga alla;
after the experience he is not a realized soul or any such thing; it's just
that he got rid of jealousy from the roots! Idhai kuRippida kavinjar thErndheduththa
varigaL:

eRumbu thOlai uriththup paarkka yaanai vandhadhadaa
en idhaya thOlai uriththup paarkka gnanam vandhadhadaa

Being so thrilled at the peace that has come in him, our naayakan further sings:

piRakkum munnE irundha uLLam indru vandhadhadaa
iRandha pinnE varum amaidhi vandhuvittadhadaa

Summarizing, ip paadal sOhap paadal alla. In fact, it is sung by the character
in great happiness, no, actually more, it is in esctacy! Paadalukku kavinjar
Kannadhasan varaindha varigaL aRpudham. Saanthamaana tune pOttu, kadalin alaiyOsaiyum,
aaravaarap pEygaL kaththuvadhaiyum, aalayamaNiyin Osaiyum sariyaana idangaLil izhaya
vittu paadalai unnadhamaaga aakkivittanar mellisai mannargaL; paadalai nalla uNarchchiyudan

If I may, I'd like to make a suggestion. Because of the generational spread within this Forum, quite a few of the fans have not had the exposure or the opportunity to appreciate some of the meaningul songs from yester-years, but would like to. Very true. The excellent songs in KN were overshadowed by the brilliant comedy by Balaiah and Nagesh. Even though I had heard those songs before when I watched the movie for the first time
I was pleasantly surprised everytime a song started (indha paattu indha padaththilaya?). I got the same feeling when I watched 'KarNan' (courtesy: Madras DD). Here is the list of KarNan songs - hope I didn't miss any..

1. KangaL engae - PS (The music is excellent throughout the movie, esp. in this song + PS's voice)

I'm waiting for KarNan to be released in video-CD; my videotape is really good, but in some places, the dialogues get cut off. My Kaadhalikka Naeramillai tape is very good, and we continue to watch that movie at least once a year, since that's a family favorite.

Thanks Kanchana for those KarNan songs.

I like all the songs from Ninaviellam Nitya. When this movie was about to be released (1982) there was a lot of expectation about this movie (Sridhar's favorite 'love 'theme, Gemini's daughter GG etc). But Sridhar disappointed with a so-so movie but not IR. Like other IR-Sridhar combined movies (Ilamai oonjaladukirathu, azagae unnai Aradhikkiren, Thendrale ennaith thodu), NN had 6 very good songs.

1. Panivizhum malar vanam - SPB Excellent tune, fell in love with this one the very first time I listened this in Vividh Bharati.
2. Needhanae endhan pon vasantham - SPB another smooth flowing melody
3. Rojavaith thalattum thendral - SPB & SJ Melody,melody,melody,....
4. Kanal neer pol endhan kaadhal - SJ pathos version of NO.3 had some good lyrics like 'vasanthnagal vazhththum pozhudhu unadhu kiLayil poovaven; ilaiyudhir kalam muzhudhum udirndhu unakku veravaen'
5. KannipoNNu kaimelae - MV & PS A decent song with good beats.
6. ThoLin melae baram illae - another good, fun number by SPB & chorus

I was always thinking of Flag for the word Kodi and never realised that it was maram chedi Kodi (creeper). I knew my interpretation did not fit very well with the other lines.

I was very reluctant to participate in Kannadasanin Padaipugal because of my very poor recollection power of lyrics and my poor tamizh knowledge.

After you pointed out that you have already explained in that thread I went there and read line by line, What a Surprise!! you have exactly explained the same two lines that I had asked for. Amazing isn't it :)) Is this a coincidence ???
