Raghu:
By now, you should know that SPB has so far won 6 (SIX) national awards - not 5, not 7, but 6 (SIX). You have been corrected so many times before on these pages, but you just like to repeat the same story!!
Your argument those days was that Padmashri is a national award and so the total for SPB was 7! National Film awards are quite different from National Honours. If one is to agree with your logic, KJY has won 9 national awards, including the Padmashri and the Padhabhushan. But that is not true.
We all know that this is your round about way of starting another thread about SPB, but by adding all those other names, you think you are fooling the world! Repeating a lie a million times won't make it the truth!!
By the way, most of your numbers are wrong. You have taken away some awards (eg: Chitra and M.G. Sreekumar)and awarded them to some others (eg: SPB)

umm...let's see. If you are trying to see if the number of awards has a correlation to talent within that select group - maybe or maybe not. However, they are all more talented than you and me, who don't have a crying chance to even hold the National Award. So yes, in that respect it has a correlation. :-)

VJ has 3 national awards, KSC and PS have 5 National awards.
Raghu = for God's sake your GOD SPB has 6 awards only. PADMASHRI is a national honour and not a national award.
Also national awards do indicate the calibre of the artist most of the times. But there sure seems to be a lot of lobbying going around. I am amazed as to how every year just one film walks away with half the awards. I mean look at Shankarabharanam, Lekin, Apoorva raagangal and Parichay etc. One and the same film gets award for best singer (male & female), lyricist, composer, director....a bit too much, right? Not that these films lacked anything or didnt deserve the award, but how come several awards for just one movie?

Why missed out KB SundaraambaaL. She won the best female playback singer at national level for Kandan karunai.
For what films, SPB,KSC and SJ got national award? Pl post.

Add Minsara Kanavu to that list. All the three - SPB, KSC and ARR walked away with national awards that year. Amazing that this movie, of all the other tens of good movies in the whole country, which had normal mass-appeal songs and which can be sung by any of our current singers, bagged the three main awards in the music category. I'm sure even SPB, KSC and ARR wouldn't have expected this. All the three of them had much better offerings in other movies prior to this one. I'm sure there is a lot of lobbying going on with this awards business. IMHO, not all of these awards truly recognized the musicians' talent.

SPB got the award for the song "Thankgath Thamarai" in Minsara Kanavu. SPB himself said that he is happy for getting the award for that song because he felt the jury appreciated the way he has sung that song. He was saying that song expresses many emotions of a person whose lover has not understood his love.
Even in my opinion too that song is sung in an excellent manner by SPB (as usual!).
The voice of Chitra in that movie was very good indeed.
The tunes of ARR were really catchy especially OOhh lalalla...
May be that movie was best among the movies released that year. I do not see any thing unfair in giving awards for Minsara Kanavu.

Good topic...Awards mean anything? Really hard to say. There are many musicians who did well but stay forgotten. One award and many musicians..a dice game. It also depends on who decides it? If one feels that award for a particular song is justifiable then it is well and good. But one has to ask themselves whether every award song overcomes this barrier. I really doubt. But as somebody mentioned nevertheless all of them are talented people. Stay way far from us.. Let's appreciate their talents...Award is just an occasional compliment...

Kaumadi,
I agree with you. I think those that were associated with the music must have been more suprised than anyone, simply b/c they have done many other good work that has gone unnoticed. The music of Minsaara kanavu stands average next to some of ARR's other gems. I think an award for something like Duet would have been more appropriate, even Thiruda Thiruda was better, in novelty at least.

Does awards mean anythings?
Nothing as long as you have not won much them and as long as your rival keeps winning them in a short period.
It means every thing..yes, when it is given to you only and your children later.
I think this argument was already touched a year ago.
See Anu Malik got the award...aththan...that made the fool of every body. Not for you and not for me..because we keep fightling with each other and we miss the bus.

how about KJY? did he win any National awards for any thamizh movies??

Thanks Kalai for the update. I really wonder, how the rules in deciding the awards gets changed. Initially, the films which were re-made (Ex: Devar magan into Virasat), were not considered for award selection. Now they have changed it seems. Virasat, Rudra Veena, Ek Duje keliye are remade to other languages. But they won awards.. It looks strange...

In the name of national awards, lots of jokes have been made, so don't take this serious. Of course, some genuine people also have received.
MSV didn't receive award, but Anumaalik did,
Sivji didn't, but Anil Kapoor did
Revathi didn't but Raveen Tandon did
TMS didn't but many youngsters did in first few songs
This doesn't mean people that didn't receive award are not talented.
I remember the song of our great immortal kavignar Kannadasan:
putthiyuLLa manitharellAm vetri kAnbathillai
vetri petra manitharellAm putthisAli illai!!

Well Revathy is a talented actress. You don't know what acting means mr.pffffttt. what you are one of those mumtaz fans? or one of those Disgusting rambha fans? or one of those actresses who depends severely on dubbing voice? she has given wonderful performances.

* Kaadhal Oviyam (for IR and SPB)
* Chitra for "yenge yenadhu kavithai..." in KKKK
* Guru (Mallu movie for IR. The best you can hear in recent time on WCM and Indian fusion)
* Sivaji for Muthal Mariyadhai
* IR for Moondram Pirai

Pfffftt ... Revathy is one of the best actress tamil movie has ever seen. You guys don't know what is good acting? Her performance in Anjali is 100 times better than Jennifer Connelly in Beautiful Mind. Her performance in Pudhumai Penn is 100 times better than Julia Roberts in Erin Brockovich. Now you keep your mouth shut don't try to act like big highschool kid who don't like serious actresses like Revathi, Radhika, Lakshmi.
What the hell do you know about acting???

national awards dont mean anything... based on the songs that SPB or KSC got the awards doesnt mean that they were the best singers during that year... i remember that swarnalatha was given the national award for a very mediocre song 'porale ponnu thaiye' and balu mahendra's filthy movie 'vanna vanna pookal ' got a national award too..
