Since all the effort is put on developing songs... there is less effort by MDs in Background Music,,, many mds would agree with me..
If we demand better BGM; they would deliver;;;
Compared to Hollywood; tamil films don't come even close to the scores created by hollywood composers...
so, if the films in tamil are to sound cinematic and dramatic to our years; we need to demand better BGM.

Answer is simple.
Do you remember any other MD's bgm now(leave alone IR)?

so MD's are not responsible for creating the Background score??? what do you mean Ramesh.

MDs must have the capabiltiy first. Then only can they go into bgm. Do you think these MDs can compose bgm. Pick & paste may be but original composition? The very word you use 'MD', doesn't it say it all? Music Director? They are only musical directors. Nothing much to it.
As far as India is concerned, there is only one composer.
Now you get it?

I don't remember ANY MD's BGM SCORE nowadays, even that of IR. That's because I don't bother to watch any Tamil movies nowadays.

The BGM has some life when the scene is well shooted and the Composer (not MD) should be touched in his heart by that scene. It should make him to relate the scene to one of the happenings in his life. That brings out the excellent BGM stuff.
If the MDs are touched in heart by Gladiator & Die another day ... there is no meaning for BGM, they can buy a Xerox machine and keep it in their studio instead of Music Instruments.

I agree that TFM is way behind Hollywood in BGM's.
But that's not the fault of the MD"s , the director and producer of the movies are more concerned about songs than the bgm.Manirathnam is one director who gives importance to BGMS and it shows in his movies.
I also dont agree that IR is the only god as some people seem to think ,the best directors picked him and that shows in their music. We all know how MR picked ARR and changed the film music in India, so i think it all comes to the Directors efforts to get the best out of everyone.

For those interested in listening to Hollywood BGM's, listen to
"Road to perdition"
"The Hours".
both are great.you can download it from kaaza.
I would also include "Requiem for a dream" for those who havent heard it.

Jinx..
I don't agree that IR gave good BGM's because good directors picked him. He has given good BGM's irrespective of the director. In fact I would dare to say that he is the one who gave importance to BGM and made it one of the most vital aspects in movie making. How many MD's would actually sit through the ordeal of watching the movie without any music playing and then coming up music to match the moods? IR has set the trend for this and very few hard working MD's follow it. No other MD in Indian film music has given such importance to BGM and made it an art form, ONLY IR has.
digression:
I don't think ARR changed the film music in India. I am pretty sure you have not listenend many telugu songs or malayalam songs, they have their own trend and don't follow ARR's "style" of music.
end.

IR is easily flexible in BGMs.
Just watch the Mal Film 'Guru' or 'Jhoney'. The BGM Score is just amazing. Lovely western interludes with a desi touch. One may wonder that this man should be in the Hollyhood.
Watch Mudhal Mariyahai or Kasi. He proves that he is from a village.
Listen to Mal Film 'Adharmam' or 'Sindhu Bhairavi' or 'Unnal Mudiyum Thambi'. He shows his Skill as a Carnatic Genious.
Watch out the Hindi Film 'Lazza' or 'Kalapani'. He is at the peak in Orchestration.
Hear 'My Dear Kuttichathan' or Animation Film 'Pandavaas'. He is good at Cartoon Music too.
He is all in all. He has tried it all in his 800+ odd films from 1978 to till date. It just needs a little bit of encouragement now, to wake up this Sleeping Lion. If he enters the Hollywood, it is a childs play for him to prove his mettle in BGMs.
I have listened to several western Albums, and some of the best are almost in par with IR's Best Albums. Be proud that u have a genious in our soil.

Be proud that u have a genious in our soil, instead of comparing him to some freshers like ARR or Harris.
Is there any logic (?) in comparing IR (who has handled Maximum Musical Instruments, Maximum Ragas, 800 Films, 4500 Songs and 2000 Hours of BGMs in just 20 Years, to Youngsters like ARR & HARRIS who have just given 120 Odd Films in 10 Years.

Music is a field where you can not judge a person by a single movie. If he is able to maintain the tempo, without any repetitions or Plagurism for next say 20 movies, then we can commedably say that 'This guy has real stuff'.

Jag ,
My point was not to degrade IR or anything like that. My point is that instead of blaming the MD's , we need to blame the directors as they're the ones who can bring out the best from the MD's.As an example i said all MR's movies have great BGM , is that just coincidence?
Also for those who are saying ARR's BGM is bad, keep saying that or just go and listen to DILSE and Alaipayuthey again (just to name a few).
and Venki kanna arivujeevi ...
I dont know really what to say about why hollywood BGM is better that TFM BGM.You just have to see the movies and you know the difference or let me say if i see 10 tamil movies probably 1 movie has Ok BGM compared to hollywood probably 6/7 are good.I'm not really comparing the best BGM of TFM to the best of hollywood here.

jinx123, appreciate if you could provide instances of Great BGMs of ARR in movies mentioned above. Also as a paradox, both of them are MR's. So if at all any worthwhile thing to talk about it is 50-50 for ARR/MR??
In Bharathi, when Subbhaiyas uncle ask him come to Kasi, in the scene itself, IR opens a grand devotional song. This is not even figured in casettes. Though it can be counted as a song, but very instance to bring forth the holiness of Kasi.
While IR uses non songs as great BGMs, ARR fills most of the scenes with instrument version of the song itself. One more similar example, is Unnal mudiyum thambi. So many bits of BGM will definitely qualify for a very good songs.
