SPT Films’ Ullasa Paravaugal- 1980 was directed by CV Rajendran.
‘Germaniyn sendhen malare’ is a lovely SPB-SJ duet, with IR’s magic in full flow.
The tolling of the church bells in the enticing prelude, SPB and SJ’s unique bonding that facilitates such a feeling of joyous romance, with their ‘la la la’ and ‘ra papappapa’ adding a stimulating swing to the flow, SJ’s animated ‘kaathal nayagan paarvai kandathum’ after the first charanam are moments that make this song so special. For me, in addition to all these, it is the second interlude, which is particularly mind-blowing---I can never tire of listening to it, and each time the music gives me a feeling of dreamily floating in air.
Ullasa Paravaigal had several other noteworthy songs:
Naan undhan thaayaga vendum- SJ
Deiveega ragam thevittadha Padal- Jency
Azhagiya malargalin- SJ
Azhagu aayiram- SJ
The only song that failed to impress was ‘engengum kandenamma’ by SPB / MV for Venniradai Moorthi & Surulirajan.

Vengayam, I guess Gopu also directed films like Kasi Yaathirai & Vasanthi.
C V, NC Chakravarthi was the director of UUV. Years later (in 1984), under the name 'Chakki', he directed Magudi.

I used to love the song when the song came out. Two things have killed it.
1. My friends warned me not to see the movie- friends in deed indeed!- so I did not see the flick till Satellite channels came up. i missed it several times , but one day I foolishly thought what the heck. This should rank with Per sollum Pillai, Mangama Sabatham, pagadai 12 as the abyss of kamal.
2. Rathi's wooden performance.
The interludes are indeed fabulous - but the lyrics have a touch of candy floss to it. It seems I've outgrown it now.
Saravanan,
Vasanthi - ethaavathu vellicham poda mudiyuma.
bb, Among Vintage IR , I like Veezhiyile malarnthathu. Has it been featured on SOTD?

bb, we are all too drowned in IR's magical music to care about Deeps and pits. The trumpet sounds in the prelude and first interlude are awesome. Second interlude , as Sara mentioned is also my favorite and could become a mini theme on its own. Don't miss the violins that back up the lines "la la va va va ennai annaithe kadhai solla " and the next line , playing a parallel melody.

vengayam,
AVM's Vasanthi-1988 was directed by Gopu and was among Mohan's last attempts to retain his position as a hero(!). The film didn't fare well, despite Chandrabose's songs like 'Sandosham kaanatha'(KJY)and 'Ravivarman ezhudhaadha kalaiyo'(KJY & Chitra)
Another film that Gopu directed was Filmco's Vellai Manasu-1985. Stg: YG Mahendran & Ramya Krishnan (debut). Memorable songs by S-G were 'Aathora nilave'(VJ) and 'Pachappulla nenjukkulle aasai'(KJY)

Germaniyin is good, but I thought Azhagu aayiram was the true winner with its majestic opening and interludes(and the humming) successfully capturing that feeling of being in some spectacular locales, staring at something awestruck.(For example, you should be walking across the Brooklyn bridge looking at the imposing Manhattan skyline from a distance while playing back azhagu aayiram's prelude in your mind. The song automatically crossed my mind when I was there last time)
Overall, a very stylishly composed album keeping in mind the film's setting. Engengum kandenamma was the only sore point.
