Ram,
Rock music, especially the genre of the 60's had European and American folk influence, which makes them at certain times, a very interesting blend of lyrics and melody. Infact there are certain songs, that have an obvious Indian influence, considering the 60's movement had a lot to do with the so called 'discovery of the east'. Pink Floyd scores extremely high on arrangement. Interestingly, rock music seems to appeal more to the people who are interested in Carnatic rather than Hindustani, I get the feeling its because of the structure of rock music per se. Unfortunately Rock is associated with the kind of trash that infilters the markets these days. And much like Classical music, I believe that rock should be introduced to a person in capsules. Unfortunately most people find themselves bombarded by too many genres of rock at the same time, hence it sounds a little cacophonous to the senses...
Best of luck for your exams. Crack them! :-)
Promise you links et al when you are free and we could try and figure out the raagam ..

Mandu: If people who are FOND of you call you "mandu" I wonder what people call you when they don't like you! :)
IR Fan: thanks for the link to the thavasi song. I am glad to find it is sung by Sujatha not Nithyasree, 'cos I am a nithya (forever) Nithya fan.
Btw, talking about Nithyasree, I was listening to some songs by her whose raagams were not given on the CD and this is my guess. Please correct me if I messed up:
1. "Un madhi muga vadanam ..." from venkatesha suprabhatam and srinivasa kalyanam (whole CD is in tamil) is shuddha dhanyasi. I make this guess because it sounds an awful lot like "kanngal engey" from karnan.
2. "Nenjil uramum inri, nermai thiramum inri" from Nithyasree's Bharatiyar songs is in senjurutti.
3. The number, "chaakar rakho ji" by MS (not Nithyashree) is in Maand.

Amritha,
My maths teachers used to glare at me, my cousin steals my share of mysore pakkus. :-) People who are not fond of me... well.. I don't really bother listening to them, so I don't know what they refer to me as. Tho I'd say it wouldn't be something angelic!

Yes. The Temple still stands - a few kms from kumbakonnam - Or atleast it was standing until some 15 years ago - I guess- when I visited there - I remember vaguley taking a bus from kumbakonam and walking a few kms from the bus stop to reach the temple.

Mandu,
My xams over...let's try to figure out thr ragas of the Pink Floyd u mentioned....send me the link

Ram,
If you have Audiogalaxy, then try and download the following tracks:
1) Goodbye, Blue Sky - Pink Floyd (Album- The Wall)
2) Coming back to life - Pink Floyd (Album- Division Bell)
3) Wish you were here - Pink Floyd (Album -Wish you were here)
As I try to identify the raagas, I realize that its difficult because a lot of rock involves harmonizing. Am adding a few songs to this list that might be easier to figure out. Then we'll go on to more complicated stuff. :-)
1) Fields of Gold - Sting (Album -Best of Sting)
2) April come she will - Art Garfunkel
3) Me and Bobby McGee - Janis Joplin
4) Forever Young - Joan Baez
5) Yellow Submarine - Beatles
6) Winds of Change - Scorpions
7) Sounds of silence - Simon and Garfunkel
I guess somewhere along the way, you have to compromise slightly. Certain songs, you will have to ignore the interludes. In certain songs, there seems to such a mad change every now and then. Ignore the drama of Rock, pick on the lead and then focus all your attention on it. Happy Listening! In case you don't have Audiogalaxy and don't download music, post a message again and I will look for suitable Real Audio links.

BTW .. Ram, be patient. Rock grows on you. Its a little hard sometimes to get used to the 'supposed' cacaphony, but give it a shot nevertheless.
